About the smell of weed coming from next door

Fernlea · 01/10/2020 14:05

My daughter can smell weed in her bedroom, which isn't something she finds particularly pleasant, not sure if it's seeping through the walls, or they are smoking outside below her room. I can see they are growing cannabis plants on their bedroom window cill so pretty certain it's that/them.
Trouble is they are new neighbours and just wondering how best to tackle this?

Op it smells absolutely awful doesn't it. I can't believe how many people feel so relaxed about weed I think it stinks and I think it would be awful having 'high' people around so close to children. I live in a city centre and our neighbourhood police have said if we smell weed/see people smoking it then it should be reported online. They said they would then 'pretend' they were casually walking by their property saying they had been on patrol and smelled it. We live in a row of big victorian terraces. The house next to us is converted into flats and when the previous occupants were in one, I was convinced the smell was coming through walls. She once smoked it in the front garden and the smell came straight through. I asked her if she'd mind doing it elsewhere as I have young children and the smell was really seeping through the front door. She respected this which I was grateful for.

Onesailwait · 03/10/2020 04:08

I'm a little late to the party but just wanted to add, I would think the smell is coming from the smoking & not the growing. In which case I would just go speak to them & explain the smell coming into your house & could they smoke outside away from the windows. I find stoners are generally a reasonable bunch. I have a small greenhouse type set up in my basement (totally legal) the smell doesn't escape to the rest of the house at all. I doubt they get much of a harvest growing on the windowsill, my set up cost me a pretty penny.

emilyfrost · 03/10/2020 04:20

It’s not tricky at all. You ring the police. You don’t engage with anyone who thinks it’s okay to take drugs; they’re clearly not of sound, reasonable mind.

workhomesleeprepeat · 03/10/2020 09:41

Every time I come back to this thread, there is another deluded poster writing about calling the police 😂😂 you must all live in very lovely innocent worlds if your local police would bust down someone’s door for a bit of pot smell.

You do know there are class A drugs, big time dealers, organised crime etc...and you think the police are going to chase down a bit of marijuana 🤣🤣🤣🤣 oh my days this site sometimes

AlexaShutUp · 03/10/2020 09:52

All the people saying that the police would do nothing...you're probably right in many instances, but they do act sometimes.

I know someone who reported that they thought their neighbours were growing weed. I was convinced that the police would do nothing but they sent a drone initially and subsequently raided the house.

annabel85 · 03/10/2020 09:53

@workhomesleeprepeat

All these people saying report to the police...as if they would actually turn up for someone smoking a spliff Grin
Why should we expect the police to enforce the law?

I'd be looking to move house. Drug addicts are sick people.

Lurchermom · 03/10/2020 10:07

We had this as a student - we could continually smell weed even in our hallway and especially in one of the bedrooms of our rented house. A drugs raid (not promoted by us) next door revealed a massive cannabis farm so the smell can definitely seep through the walls/through loft spaces etc.

If not vented properly.

It's axiomatic that criminals (not known for being the brightest of bunnies) won't spend a penny more than they have to in order to secure their profits (see also:large corporations). Stealing electricity being the most obvious example. Which leads to more warranted searches than any other leads (despite what the police tell the local papers). Mess with your meter, and you will be caught.

No you can't ...

Another example of that phenomenon peculiar to Mumsnet - a poster who believes that she knows more about the OP's neighbours than the OP does...
Fernlea · 03/10/2020 14:24

Well m not moving house, it's my family home and I've just spent a small fortune doing it up.
DD just come out of her bedroom says it reeks in there.
How inconsiderate and as someone else pointed out they both drive.....
I bet they'd deny any knowledge of a smell if I challenged them.

By the way they are buying not renting... And to think I was so welcoming.

Demand to speak to the drug squad. Don't let them fob you off.

workhomesleeprepeat Nope, not deluded. I just happen to live in an area where the police actually do their jobs and on the rare occasions we have issues with drug addicts—including weed—they have always taken action.

I feel sorry for you that you live in such a shit area where the police don’t do their jobs properly and you have no faith in them.

DdraigGoch · 03/10/2020 15:09

Could you come over as naive and ask them if they've had any problems with their drains as "there's a really awful smell wafting in from your house?" then recommend a plumber. Might make them think without letting on that you know what it really is.

Mariola321 · 03/10/2020 15:21

Police dont care about smoking. Maybe growing when a lot plants like for dealing.

TheUser420 · 03/10/2020 16:47

If they are dealing, then pound to a penny that the local plod are aware, in which case it's entirely possible that a complaint from a neighbour would be the necessary prompting to act. But if they are dealing it's not from their house otherwise the OP would have noticed it a long time ago.

Another example of that phenomenon peculiar to Mumsnet - a poster who believes that she knows more about the OP's neighbours than the OP does...

Just consider it cosmic balance for the majority of posters who spout complete bollocks about cannabis to someone who has spent the past 40 years growing it in every possible circumstance all over the world Grin

And I still raise an eyebrow at the idea that regular tokers are managing to supply themselves with the harvest from a plant grown under natural light and behind glass in the UK, autoflowering or not. I know it features in Graham Greene and the sitcom "Shelley", but that are - as Stephen Fry might say - madey uppey.

All of which doesn't detract from my point upthread about being annoyed by anti-social tokers. After all, it's not like people who like a drink are ever anti social.

stripeydress7 · 03/10/2020 17:07

I got my DH to ask our neighbours to stop smoking weed and they did. We were really polite about it but firm (they tried to joke around but DH was just firm and polite).

Ask and of they do nothing call the police.

workhomesleeprepeat · 03/10/2020 18:24

@emilyfrost nice one trying to look down your nose at me there 🤣🤣 good to know MN snobbery alive and well!

Where do you live? Maybe I should move there seeing as your local services are so well funded, lucky you!

nosswith · 03/10/2020 18:26

If they drive at all, reporting them to the police might save them being in a car crash and injuring themselves or others.

Mariola321 · 04/10/2020 01:38

Thing is weed smokers cause less problem for police than drinkers. Not fighting and falling down in street. Just lay on sofa.

Notimeforaname · 04/10/2020 01:53

🤣🤣 Just came back to this thread, comfortably stoned. Some of these comments are great

Mariola321 · 04/10/2020 01:58

Speak to drug squad. 😂 Weed was decriminalised in UK for a while but now class C again I think so police don’t care. Remember I read police memo leaked which told officers not to arrest for weed but just take away. Will probably be legal in few years like America.

Notimeforaname · 04/10/2020 02:01

It's also not uncommon for police to smoke it themselves. As they are just people...and have easy access to it. I know several.

Mariola321 · 04/10/2020 02:01

Crazy to call police for bad smell. 😂 My neighbour cook curries every day and hate much worse than weed. But would not call police.
