About the smell of weed coming from next door

My daughter can smell weed in her bedroom, which isn't something she finds particularly pleasant, not sure if it's seeping through the walls, or they are smoking outside below her room. I can see they are growing cannabis plants on their bedroom window cill so pretty certain it's that/them.
Trouble is they are new neighbours and just wondering how best to tackle this?

Drug squad 😂

yelyah22 · 04/10/2020 02:10

Police probably won't do anything, OP. I am all for weed & full legalisation (I can't smoke it, because it makes me vom every time I tried!) but I also hate the smell, so I feel for you on that plus you don't want your daughter's sleep and clothes etc affected. I'd probably go with being friendly about it initially - give them a text if you have their numbers, or if you spot them in person just ask them to move where they smoke/if they're growing. Don't ask if they are - you know they are and they might just lie cos they'll panic.

Could you investigate any structural changes you might make? It might be through floor joists in which case you might not be able to do much, but there could be other routes which might be able to be addressed. You probably would need the neighbour's cooperation to investigate but it might also make them more considerate about which rooms they smoke in.

The smell of cannabis seeps through walls. I don't think the police will do much about cannabis, as smoking it in the house or garden, and apparently you can grow a couple or more plants for your own use without any problems. I find the stench of cannabis horrible, but if it wafts into your garden etc, there is not much you can do about it,except tell the neighbours to smoke further away, as in on their roof tops ha ha.

Shxx · 04/10/2020 03:43

Legal to grow 3 plants. Might be more. Tell them but don't be rude about the smell.

Calling police is a waste of everyone's time and years of harassment you will probably endure

Mariola321 · 04/10/2020 03:47

It’s is not legal to grow three plants. 🤦‍♀️ Even people who make cbd oil need permit.

Shxx · 04/10/2020 03:54

Mario you're right
I must be high

Mariola321 · 04/10/2020 04:26

I would be growing if could!

youdidask · 04/10/2020 05:28

The smell definitely comes through walls.
Was or is there a chimney breast on that wall? That's what aided the permeating smell for us.
We ended up not using the room. Weekends were bad.
Neighbour would apologise but not actually stop.

We moved and the house was bought buy an enormous bodybuilder - very health conscious type. I like to fantasied that the stinky pothead got what he deserved him.

opendoors · 04/10/2020 05:38

How old is your daughter OP? I used to smoke weed and cigarettes when I lived at home and would blame the neighbours 😂🙈

Angelina82 · 04/10/2020 06:57

Not nice for your DD, but it’s also not nice to have a falling out with your immediate neighbours, especially over something so trivial. I would wait until I bumped into them and ask them nicely if they could smoke further away from the house. Do not call the police ffs. Hmm

CottonSock · 04/10/2020 07:06

I have same issue, they have a smoking tent outside my window. I hope winter will see them back inside. Next year i might ask about moving the tent a bit.

DrGachet · 04/10/2020 07:37

One of these should help rid your DD's room of smells.

Weed was decriminalised in UK for a while

It wasn't. It really wasn't.

TheUser420 · 04/10/2020 10:33

Legal to grow 3 plants

The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971[1] makes it an offence to cultivate any plant of the genus Cannabis (without a licence from the Home Office).

So if you want to grow acres and acres of the stuff in Norfolk for your mates making a whopping profit out of it (the UK being the worlds biggest supplier of medical cannabis) - go ahead. Just don't dare grow a single plant without.

That said I have heard of police trying not to bother for a single plant - but they have their monkey on their backs.

But even it growing and smoking were legal, it's still not a carte blanche for dickhead anti social behaviour which is best left to people who use the drug "alcohol", since they have pretty much nailed that for millennia.

[1] One of the UKs least understood pieces of law - so far misunderstood by every home secretary since Jenkins.

Really was. Down to Class C for a bit.

Mariola321 · 04/10/2020 14:39

See below.

Was made same as solvent and glue etc, so police do nothing about it. Even now they don't do much if catch.

slipperywhensparticus · 04/10/2020 14:40

To me it smells like burning tomcat pee and grass

Its rank

TheUser420 · 04/10/2020 14:47

@Mariola321

Once again. It wasn't. It was still a criminal offence. Moreover they upped the penalties for class C so that the net effect of Blunketts decision was a bit fat zero. And then the Daily Mail kicked off and it was put back to Class B (where the penalties had been increased to allow for Class C to be increased, so actually worse than before it was downgraded).

Usually I'm not too bothered about the bollocks everyone thinks they know about cannabis. But in this case, blubbering on that it was once decriminalised - along with more complete and utter poppycock about being allowed to grow there plants could get someone into trouble in the UK.

Mariola321 · 04/10/2020 14:56

Well, policeman walk up to me three times when smoking joint and just say put out. Say smoke it at home and no problem. 🤷‍♀️ Not care at all.

Mariola321 · 04/10/2020 14:56

When i was younger of course

Lostswallow · 10/08/2021 16:37

You’re not very bright, or diplomatic are you?
You do realise that reporting people to the police just perpetuates the circle of poverty?
Someone didn’t do very well on their A-level critical thinking….

Funnylittlefloozie · 10/08/2021 17:27

They're clearly not poor if they can afford to buy a house!

Is it Weed Week or something? This is about the fourth thread I've seen banging on about it, and bringing out all the stones and growers.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/08/2021 17:33

No one is growing cannabis on a window sill in the UK. Well, not for harvest leastways. For a decent yield you'd need a plant around 3-4ft tall minimum, and at least 2ft at the base. Are you kidding?

Weed is, or maybe that should be was, the drug of choice because the fucking stuff is incredibly hardy, almost weedlike, and will put up with all sorts of conditions.

Many of us boring older posters used to grow the stuff, on windowsills, before all the lights etc became easily available.

Is the current skunk stuff so much more delicate than the lesser smelling weed of yore?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/08/2021 17:35

Huh? Did I miss a cognitive link there?
