At 47 and having lived together for 23 years, dh and I have never had or felt the need for a microwave.
However, ds (15) is badgering me to get one, he says he can make things quicker in it and in the future when we are away or out he and his sister can make quick and easy meals for themselves.
I remember having one when we lived at home and it was only used for heating beans and defrosting stuff.
They are obviously still popular as they are for sale everywhere.
So what do you use yours for?
Does anyone actually make proper meals in there microwave?

Not a lot! Soup, reheating leftovers, beans, popcorn (a few times a year!)

Jackparlabane · 20/09/2020 19:00

Porridge every morning, reheating coffee or tea a couple times a day.

Cooking frozen veg, defrosting meat.from the freezer. Beans or spaghetti hoops about once a month.

Heating up leftovers, frozen Yorkshire puddings, any dinner that's got cold.

And over Christmas, cooking and reheating Christmas pudding! Not steaming for hours on end.

And hot water bottles and bean-filled substitutes.

dudsville · 20/09/2020 19:00

Pop corn (we bought it for this purpose!), defrosting frozen spinach. Occasionally reheating leftovers.

Orchidflower1 · 20/09/2020 19:00

Warming milk even.... I don’t think the milk needing warning it was going to be used for a latte.

vanillandhoney · 20/09/2020 19:00

Reheating coffee.
Heating up things like tinned soup or beans as it then means one less dish to wash up afterwards.
Making mug cakes.
The occasional ready meal.
Frozen jacket potatoes if I'm in a rush or feeling lazy.
Making porridge.
Heating up milk for hot chocolate.
Melting cheese on nachos or similar.
Reheating leftovers.

At the grand old age of 57 our microwave is used for...sterilizing baby bottles and maybe reheating the cups of tea and coffee that I never get to drink hot thanks to said babies.

I only use mine for rehating meals but most of them could be done in a pan with no problems . Mine works but is very old and stained and scruffy looking , I keep thinking I want I new ( to match my new kitchen ) one but I wont buy one while this one works

whensmynexthol1day · 20/09/2020 19:04

Loads of things! Cooking frozen veg, heating up kids milk, reheating leftovers, defrosting meat and bread, heating up baked beans/ soup, making custard. Couldn't do without ours

Mmsnet101 · 20/09/2020 19:05

Soup, beans, scrambled egg, porridge, melting butter for baking, frozen veg, bringing back stale bread, leftovers, toddler meals, warming milk for coffee... Loads! Yet we never eat ready meals.

BackforGood · 20/09/2020 19:05

Reheating meals (I have adult dc that work shifts so often eat at different times)
Jacket potatoes
Defrosting things
Heating milk
Reheating a brew I forgot about

Fishfingersandwichplease · 20/09/2020 19:05

I leave my porridge to soak in milk in a bowl overnight then zap it in the microwave for breakfast - no yucky saucepans to scrape clean!

AlwaysLatte · 20/09/2020 19:05

We tend to just use it for warming leftovers, or my coffee when it keeps getting cold. There's a good defrost function on ours too. I wouldn't be without it even though we don't use it for actual main cooking.

Tanfastic · 20/09/2020 19:06

Scrambled eggs
Reheating meals
Soup
Beans
Reheating tea/coffee if it's gone cold
The odd ready meal

cakeandchampagne · 20/09/2020 19:10

Buy a microwave and let your ds show you how great it is! Smile

wowfudge · 20/09/2020 19:10

Heating milk for a latte, defrosting frozen fruit for breakfast, heating soup from lunch, cooking frozen veg for tea, reheating cooked potatoes, etc., etc. I wouldn't want to be without it.

Thismummyruns · 20/09/2020 19:11

The main use for mine is reheating my tea several times before giving up Hmm

For context, I have a 16 month old baby.

Strawberrycreamsundae · 20/09/2020 19:11

Defrosting
Starting off jacket potatoes
Reheating leftovers and cafetière coffee
Making scrambled eggs/poached eggs
Heating soup, baked beans, chocolate pudding, micro rice etc
Heating milk for custard/coffee, baby food/milk
Cooking fresh or frozen veg
Melting butter, chocolate
Probably dozens more uses over the past 42 years I have had one!
