At 47 and having lived together for 23 years, dh and I have never had or felt the need for a microwave.
However, ds (15) is badgering me to get one, he says he can make things quicker in it and in the future when we are away or out he and his sister can make quick and easy meals for themselves.
I remember having one when we lived at home and it was only used for heating beans and defrosting stuff.
They are obviously still popular as they are for sale everywhere.
So what do you use yours for?
Does anyone actually make proper meals in there microwave?

Descaling the kettle.

Nottherealslimshady · 20/09/2020 18:54

Beans, peas, rice, super noodles, pasta 'n' sauce, scones, microwave meals like curry and lasagne, soup, cold tea

unimaginativeusernamehere · 20/09/2020 18:54

Mainly re-heating leftovers to have for lunch the next day.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 20/09/2020 18:54

Beans. Frozen veg. Super noodles. Soup. Mug cakes. Reaheating leftovers.

BikeRunSki · 20/09/2020 18:54

Cooking peas, warming up soup

Rainb0wDrops · 20/09/2020 18:55

Jacket potatoes (precook in microwave then bake in oven for 20 mins to get crispy)

Cheesy topped nachos

Warming up leftovers

Heating kiddie portions of beans/spaghetti - when it's not really worth using a saucepan

Microwave meals - only occasionally but I do like an m&s curry meal

skippy67 · 20/09/2020 18:55

Making porridge. Making scrambled eggs. Hot chocolate, reheating leftovers. Loads of things.

WinWinnieTheWay · 20/09/2020 18:55

Warning plates

Beans, jacket potatoes, reheating leftovers and quick cakes

CrowBones · 20/09/2020 18:55

Descaling the kettle.

Please explain!

Reheating leftovers, speedy jacket potatoes (5 mins in microwave, 20 mins in the oven)
Mol1628 · 20/09/2020 18:56

Beans, tinned tomatoes, scrambled egg, porridge, warm milk, re heating leftovers, frozen vegetables, frozen mash. So handy for nights you don’t want to cook from scratch.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 20/09/2020 18:56

Warming up brews that I've forgotten about and have gone cold.
Dd like those ready meal curries from the chilled section so maybe once a month she'll use it for that.
That's about it really.

JaJaDingDong · 20/09/2020 18:56

I never use ours.
DH uses it to heat beans ( which I would use a saucepan for), and to heat the odd shop bought pasty (I use the oven because I hate it when the pastry goes soggy in the microwave).
Other than that I sometimes start a baked potato off in the microwave before putting it in the oven to crisp up.

superking · 20/09/2020 18:56

I've been thinking about this this week as we've just had to replace ours. We use it pretty much every day - making porridge for breakfast and reheating batch cooked frozen meals for the children's dinner are the main things. Also sometimes cooking vegetables. We only had a day between the old one breaking and getting a new one but I did miss it!

Having said that, DH and I lived without one for 4 years pre-kids and got by just fine.

dementedpixie · 20/09/2020 18:57

Reheating leftovers, starting off baked potatoes/sweet potatoes, heating beans, ready meals, etc

Bonkersblond · 20/09/2020 18:58

Got rid of ours as only ever used it to start a jacket spud off or make porridge/boil milk. Been 18 months and don’t miss at all, no regrets as both the above can be done without.

Disappointedkoala · 20/09/2020 18:58

Mostly heating food and milk for toddler DD, and "cooking" those delicious microwave chocolate pudding you get in the supermarket. Might occasionally defrost some bread buns in it.

Could easily live without one but I'd be sad about those chocolate puddings.

Levatrice · 20/09/2020 18:58

Hardly ever use ours really. Only things I’ve ever used it for;

Heating up milk for Hot chocolate.
Quick baked potatoes.
Rare microwave meal.

Can definitely live without one!

Agbqzy · 20/09/2020 18:58

Cooking veg, baked potatoes then finishing in a very hot oven to crisp up, making porridge, heating soup, cooking mushrooms.

Probably more but can't think what else.

Appuskidu · 20/09/2020 18:58

Frozen mash
Frozen sweet corn
Heating up wheat bags
Milk for hot chocolate
Warming up leftovers

afaloren · 20/09/2020 18:59

I reheat leftovers for lunch almost every day. Also good for defrosting if I’ve forgotten to get something out in advance, and for those wheatie bags if I have a sore muscle. I have also been known to make the odd mug cake Cake

Giggorata · 20/09/2020 18:59

Porridge, rice, scrambled egg, warming up stuff, defrosting stuff, making sure the gravy is piping hot.

CardsforKittens · 20/09/2020 18:59

Mostly heating things up: soup, burritos, leftover potatoes etc.
And softening butter for sandwiches in the winter.
And protecting steak from the cats when I take it out of the fridge half an hour before cooking it.

I don’t think I’ve ever made a whole meal in the microwave.

SnapeSnapeSeverusSnape · 20/09/2020 18:59

melting chocolate
white sauce
starting off jkt potatoes before crisping in oven
re-heating leftovers

Orchidflower1 · 20/09/2020 18:59

Today I’ve used it for....
Making porridge.
Warming up custard pot.
Defrosting mash.
Warning milk for latte.
