Or is there something odd about the Speakmans

What's the story with the Speakmans? Something doesn't sit right with me... Their "therapy" is miraculously quick at "treating" people with phobias of many years. Today on This Morning they helped a woman with a huge needle phobia which was preventing her getting cancer treatment. The female Speakman commented on how long the treatment was taking and then mentioned it had been a whole "4 hours." Just doesn't seem right and they both look like I wouldn't buy a 2nd hand car from them...

I've always been suspicious whenever I've seen them on TV.

I have no real reason for it though, other than they look like a double act I'd expect to see on stage in Vegas Blush

The80sweregreat · 24/08/2020 14:51

I like them , but I think the programme probably just boils it all down a lot and the therapy takes ages to work.

RUOKHon · 24/08/2020 14:54

They set off my cringe radar. I’ve never been able to put my finger on why though.

MsSweary · 24/08/2020 15:29

What therapy are they actually qualified to deliver? They make me feel uncomfortable whenever I've seen them. Like they're actually nothing like their TV persona's in real life.

thecatsarecrazy · 24/08/2020 15:32

I do find them a bit strange. Such an odd couple

ILoveFood87 · 24/08/2020 15:35

Oh god same here, always felt bad feeling that way. Do not what it is but they make me feel..... can't even describe it.

ExclamationPerfume · 24/08/2020 15:36

They give me the creeps. They look like the Riddler's from the kids TV programme.

Ellamiss · 24/08/2020 15:37

I have been fascinated by them for years, their house and lifestyle. I feel a bit mean saying that I feel suspicious of them but there is something I can’t put my finger on that doesn’t feel right.

starsparkle08 · 24/08/2020 15:48

Can’t stand them

Scattyhattie · 24/08/2020 15:49

I have a phobia so was quite curious when I saw them on TV ages ago, it was a lady that ate sponges (not cakes) who was treated, although don't know if it lasted long term.

There's something a little off with them & it doesn't feel kind despite the work they're doing helping people. They also remind me of a bit of a washed up Vegas magic act so not sure if that is what is causing bias.

I’ve always found something off about them.

DontBeShelfish · 24/08/2020 15:53

I'm sure there was a discussion about them on MN before (perhaps within another thread?). Anyway, the general consensus was that they are weird AF. Nobody seems to know what their professional qualifications are? And yes to the Vegas double act.

I saw one a few years ago where the therapy seemed to consist of terrifying a woman with a spider phobia into not being afraid of them anymore.

Generally though I think This Morning is just awful so they fit right in.

Ellamiss · 24/08/2020 15:55

Do they still do that bizarre morning wake up sing where the whole family jumps around? Confused

MsSweary · 24/08/2020 15:57

@DontBeShelfish yes, you've got something there; in the context of Good Morning they fit right in

Saucery · 24/08/2020 15:58

Sounds like they use Flooding Therapy. Extreme exposure to the source of the phobia.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 24/08/2020 15:59

They are quacks. Weirdo quacks. The psychology version of those US TV evangelists.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 24/08/2020 16:00

I’ve never liked them since I saw them “magically cure a women of her snake phobia”. To me they almost bullied her out of it saying things like “What harm has a snake ever done to you ect ect. Hmm. News flash so called professionals phobias don’t work like that

Greenglassteacup · 24/08/2020 16:02

Unfortunately ‘therapist’ isn’t a protected title, so anyone can say they are a therapist. The Speakmans are not qualified psychotherapists.

Ellamiss · 24/08/2020 16:03

They must have got that original gig through connections I suppose?

Yumpty · 24/08/2020 16:04

I know them very well and they are lovely. Eva is the sweetest lady and they cured my husband of his phobia within an hour.

Dohorseseatapples · 24/08/2020 16:04

Something odd about them OP?
You are not kidding!
Just googled and watched a couple of This Morning ‘features’. They’re not exactly the most eloquent pair are they?
Not the point but...What has he done to his face?

Someone is going to tell me he has a PHD in behavioural psychology and is a clinical psychologist aren’t they?

Gilead · 24/08/2020 16:04

They’re Charlatans with no relevant qualifications whatsoever.

Someone1987 · 24/08/2020 16:04

I believe Eva has had a hard time with past domestic violence

Greenglassteacup · 24/08/2020 16:05

They are unqualified, unaccredited and unethical
