Or is there something odd about the Speakmans

What's the story with the Speakmans? Something doesn't sit right with me... Their "therapy" is miraculously quick at "treating" people with phobias of many years. Today on This Morning they helped a woman with a huge needle phobia which was preventing her getting cancer treatment. The female Speakman commented on how long the treatment was taking and then mentioned it had been a whole "4 hours." Just doesn't seem right and they both look like I wouldn't buy a 2nd hand car from them...

Sounds like they use Flooding Therapy. Extreme exposure to the source of the phobia.

If anyone tried this on me with my phobia I doubt I’d ever leave the house again.

niceupthedance · 24/08/2020 16:07

I think it's NLP so like hypnosis, probably wears off by the next day

I'd like to see them cure an emetophobe 😂

Yumpty · 24/08/2020 16:09

It's not hypnosis, psychotherapy or flooding - it's EMDR.

Greenglassteacup · 24/08/2020 16:11

Again, they are unqualified

TBF flooding, as a process, absolutely relies on the target choosing to participate.

Forcing someone to be close to their phobia, without them having a choice in it, is just bullying. Flooding, as a technique, only has a chance of working if the fearful person agrees to it.

It's the choice that is the key.

Dohorseseatapples · 24/08/2020 16:21

It's not hypnosis, psychotherapy or flooding - it's EMDR.

Ah! A pseudoscience!

fat9fool · 24/08/2020 16:34

Did it last?

Venicelover · 24/08/2020 16:37

I agree, they are very creepy and odd. I wouldn't give them air time. I bet there are huge skeletons in the closet there!!

Margay · 24/08/2020 16:39

EMDR is not pseudoscience.

The Speakmans do not deliver EMDR.

The Speakmans appear to be totally unqualified and I would love to know how they ended up in the position they are in.

Londonmummy66 · 24/08/2020 16:45

I have no idea whether or not the Speakmans are any good at all. However, please do not diss EMDR - it is a reputable technique that is practiced by some very well respected clinical psychologists and psychiatrists. One session of EMDR (from an eminent consultant psychiatrist) was enough to cure me of a life long phobia of dogs and I have not looked back since.

BrandyandBabycham · 24/08/2020 16:50

They both look like they’ve had a lot of plastic surgery, But they do seem to cure people. My friend’s Mum went on the show & it worked for her

Dohorseseatapples · 24/08/2020 16:54

EMDR is not pseudoscience.
Many critics /skeptics say it is.

Dohorseseatapples · 24/08/2020 16:55

Those who believe it works obviously don’t
think it is.

withlotsoflove · 24/08/2020 16:55

I think a few of you are judging them because they look a bit dated.
I don’t think that’s fair.
They’ve helped lots of people- l’ve known of
qualified therapists doing jack shit and taking a salary!

zen1 · 24/08/2020 16:55

Looking at their website, it seems they ‘qualified’ through reading a few psychology books and developing their own ‘schema’ (whatever that is?!) behavioural therapy.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 24/08/2020 16:59

I don't know them but they sound like "Uri Geller" types - look very impressive, and "achieve" miraculous results, but these quick cures almost always have quick relapses - they tend to be context- dependent and when the person is in a different situation (you won't always meet your phobic object in a TV studio with a couple of therapists" standing by) the "cure" loses its effectiveness.

Norabird · 24/08/2020 17:00

@Yumpty

I know them very well and they are lovely. Eva is the sweetest lady and they cured my husband of his phobia within an hour.
I don't know them but I know someone who went on the show with a phobia and was cured. They also said they were really lovely people.

Let's not be hasty to judge on appearances! Don't forget Christopher Jefferies...

Margay · 24/08/2020 17:02

EMDR is heavily researched. Look for some journals.

It’s recommended by NICE, the American Psychological Society etc as they approve of the evidence base.

Yumpty · 24/08/2020 17:03

They definitely used EDMR on dh...

It worked and his phobia was gone forever.

Margay · 24/08/2020 17:03

And for the record, I haven’t had EMDR nor do I know anyone personally who has - but I’m convinced by the research which I have a professional interest in.

Blondiney · 24/08/2020 17:04

They're brother and sister, surely?

Doodar · 24/08/2020 17:04

He’s the weirdest looking bloke.

Margay · 24/08/2020 17:05

If they offer EMDR, why are they lobbying the NHS to stop doing EMDR and offer the Speakmans’ own developed therapy instead?

Dohorseseatapples · 24/08/2020 17:06

Let's not be hasty to judge on appearances!
Having watched several you tube videos - my judgement is based on what they say and claim to be doing.

Don't forget Christopher Jefferies...
Strange comparison!
That poor man wasn’t spouting rubbish on This Morning or trying to sell some miracle cure.

Yes, they look odd but that is not the most off putting thing about them by far.
