Another mask thread but I'm not going to apologise because I'm absolutely at the end of my tether with this sort of thing.

I can't wear a mask because I have trigeminal neuralgia and I've lost count of the stares, comments and filthy looks I've had (and yes, I do wear a lanyard, even though I'm not keen on advertising the fact that I have a hidden health condition). I've heard of people not being allowed on buses, being challenged by staff to explain their reason for exemption and being told they can't enter shops despite being exempt (none of which is legal). I've been told I should wear a visor (I can't, and they're next to useless anyway - Scotland have just banned them unless they're worn with a mask), that I should just stay at home (I can't and neither do government guidelines suggest I should), that I shouldn't use buses (I don't drive and can't walk long distances or cycle because I have inflammatory arthritis) and that I'm selfish (I'm not - if I could wear a mask, I would).

I understand this is a contentious issue but please, can people just think for a minute before they judge or comment? Exemptions are there for a reason - those who are sticklers for The Rules should surely accept and respect this one, too. It's awful that people are too scared to go out for fear of what's essentially discrimination.

The pandemic is bad enough by itself - let's not lose our sense of empathy and humanity, too.

lUntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme

You're saying those who can't (which is really very few people but loads of additional people are usising them to refuse) wear masks have the right to go out but those who are medically vulnerable do not have any right to be included in society

In response to a poster who suggested that non mask wearers should limit their time in shops and not going out unless they absolutely have to, in order that she could go out. The underlying tone was, "if you don't wear a mask you shouldn't be out".

Everybody has the right to be out, I never said they didn't. All I said was that if the poster was that concerned then maybe they ought to consider doing the very thing that they thought others (who also have the right to be part of society), should do.

If its too uncomfortable to wear a mask just stay away from people. So you don't wear makeup, or brush your teeth either? Probs best you don't get too close to anyone then

OH doesn't wear make-up but he does brush his teeth, Grin

Nope but he doesn't wear a mask.

Viviennemary · 22/08/2020 18:35

I've never seen one of those lanyards let alone any body wearing one. Are these the things girl guides wore. I've only seen one person in a supermarket without a mask and that was a man so he wasn't a girl guide. Only on MN is nearly everyone exempt.

doityourselfnow · 22/08/2020 18:35

Ok, am I missing a virus joke here?

🤦‍♀️

doityourselfnow · 22/08/2020 18:36

Boris not virus! But what a bloody apt autocorrect!!!

trappedsincesundaymorn · 22/08/2020 18:36
@trappedsincesundaymorn well maybe they should start if they're refusing to wear a mask. go for the clown look or something.
He's exempt as it goes is that ok with you?

chickenyhead · 22/08/2020 18:38

in my area we are thr only mask wearers. Lots have said the same.

I can eat myself up judging them all, or I can be reasonable and not make assumptions. I choose the latter.

@BorisLover what are you on about? Cleaning teeth? Huh? Why would not wearing make up mean I'd need to stay away from people? I'm so confused...

@Viviennemary except on MN not nearly everyone is exempt. The many mask threads relating to the wearing of masks and the comments about how those of us who are exempt variously aren't trying hard enough, are disease vectors and/or selfish attests to that. I think there are several million MN users - there will be a sizeable minority therein who can't wear masks. But by no means nearly everyone.

@xxsniperxx

Not really to be honest, my mam isn't exempt from catching covid. If you're not going to wear a mask stay indoors, or stay the heck away from me with your manky ass breath
Neither was my mum...in fact she died from it.
PennyDreadfuI · 22/08/2020 18:58

@xxsniperxx

don't let so many slide, not everyone has an issue. call these selfish douches out on their idiocy. not wearing a mask IS murder.
So those with disabilities, neurological disorders, survivors of rape and DV etc are manky ass breath having murdering selfish douches? Right. Gotcha.

You seem nice Smile

And no, Sniper. People can't stay indoors. We have to go to work, or we can't pay mortgages and bills. We have to go to medical appointments, or we may become very ill, die perhaps. We have to take children to school and care for elderly relatives.

The law doesn't require us to stay in. But it does require people to refrain from hateful, ableist attacks on those whose lives are impacted by disability or health conditions.

I really hope you're not this hateful in real life, because if you are, those laws may just catch up with you.

I can't even tell if this is a serious comment. There's been more batshit throughout this thread than what passes through Bruce Wayne's toilet.

SpangleBug · 22/08/2020 19:04

People really have lost the plot. Have people just discovered mortality and that life is one constant risk?

I know, it's almost as if nobody has ever died before.
