This obsession with blue eyes! Anyone else?

Honestly, I know it's a minor thing but it's really starting to annoy me! 🤣

Dh and I both have hazel eyes. We are white but more olivey skin (not that it matters!) Ds is the spitting image of me as a baby and his eyes are still that changeable very dark blue/brown colour, but looks dark in most lights. He has basically the same eyes I did as a baby and most of the time they look hazel, but I guess they haven't quite set yet. Mine didn't set until 1. He is 9 months. (Other babies we know with blue eyed parents have proper blue eyes - ds has never looked very blue!) Also neither DH or myself are blue!!

Pil are both blue and hazel eyed and mil is the blue eyed one and is obsessed that our baby will have blue eyes! Every time she visits (maybe 6 or 7 times now) it's "his eyes look blue! Are they blue?" Then looks disappointed when we say no. I'm not kidding. Every time she comes in! I actually have an intake of breath now. She then makes the odd comment of "well they look blue to me." as if I'm making it up. Confused

I actually find it quite offensive. Dark eyes are attractive you know! Her son has them! And ds has my eyes!
She even made some comment about how her other son has blue eyes and how beautiful they are.

Anyone else have people like this? Blue eyes are no nicer than dark eyes. Hazel eyes are beautiful thank you very much!

I thought most red heads have blue eyes?

Grapesoda7 · 13/08/2020 12:59

I think you MIL just hopes that her grandchild has inherited one of her features rather than not liking brown or Hazel eyes.

My husband has brown eyes, mine are blue with a green ring around the pupil. My two boys have really bright blue eyes, my daughter has the same as me.

I was expecting at least one to have brown eyes.

My family have black hair, blue eyes, pale skin.
I always wanted blond hair and a natural tan.

TableFlowerss · 13/08/2020 12:59

Blue eyes aren’t any more attractive (imo) however they are much much more rare. Green eyes even more rarer I believe

I love green eyes and if DH and I have a baby I’d love them to have green eyes.

zingally · 13/08/2020 13:00

Blue eyes aren't unusual in the UK, but in terms of the whole world population... they are less common. For instance, a baby born in India, to Indian parents would be incredibly unusual if they had blue eyes!

There are a larger number of people of colour, than there are white people, and white people don't always mean brown eyes by any stretch. So blue eyes are the less common colour in the world.

There is more chance of someone ending up with brown eyes than blue, so blue is seen as "special", especially by older generations. I think the obsession is a cultural/generational thing... Just ignore it!

PiggyPlumPie · 13/08/2020 13:01

Both DH and I have brown eyes and brown hair.

All 3 DC have blue eyes and brown hair! I did put in the order for the third DC to have brown eyes but no luck!

ladycarlotta · 13/08/2020 13:02

I have dark brown eyes that I've always liked and my partner has bright blue eyes that I've also always liked. Our 18mo dd has blue-grey eyes with brown flecks although they were clear blue for a long time and may not yet have settled.

I personally find it fascinating - I was certain she'd have brown eyes as both my siblings, my parents and 3 of my grandparents do. But I guess that recessive gene was lurking. I started to find it exciting that she could have blue eyes, not because I prefer them but because of the weird luck of the genetic draw. It's another way she has confounded me by being her own amazing person.

This may not be your MIL's thinking, and if she actually prefers blue eyes to brown then she's very silly. But sometimes it can just be a 'wonder' thing, not a desire for a child to look a certain way.

Ginfordinner · 13/08/2020 13:03

Blue eyes are not rare in uk or a Ireland. I’ve never heard of them being favoured over brown hazel or green.

Neither have I.
I prefer the strking looks of people with dark hair and dark eyes - iboth male and female. All the women that I consider beautiful are dark haired with dark eyes, same with men.

Change17 · 13/08/2020 13:03

lilgreen no not at all. It’s the rarest hair/eye combination.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 13/08/2020 13:08

I think Frank Sinatra’s eyes bring blue was a thing was because he was a Italian.

True, but he wasn't known as 'Ol' ITALIAN Blue Eyes', was he? It just seems a bit odd to seize on something that might have been unusal for his specific ethnic heritage but which is common in his own country. Maybe it is unusual in New Jersey, with the high Italian population?

Wowcherarestalkingme · 13/08/2020 13:09

Me, my DH and both our sons all have green eyes. Whenever it is brought up in conversation people seem to think we are lying and stare at us trying to find a different colour. ‘Yes they are a bit green, maybe hazel’, ‘they don’t look that green’ etc etc it would be an odd thing to lie about.

IntermittentParps · 13/08/2020 13:10

I don't know about it being a 'thing'. Maybe just her ideal. I'm a Brit and have green/hazel eyes and am proud of them because they mark me out as quite unusual. They remind me that I have some Welsh and Irish background as well as English and I like it. In more Romantic moments I allow myself to feel Celtic Grin

LittleMissRedHat · 13/08/2020 13:12

@Change17

I do admit with my niece, whose a redhead, I was quietly hoping her eyes would stay blue or turn to a greeny colour only because the red hair blue eye combo is so rare.
My niece has red hair and bright, bright blue eyes that flash even brighter when she is mad and she's as fiery as they come! Grin

“ My niece has red hair and bright, bright blue eyes that flash even brighter when she is mad and she's as fiery as they come!”

I think red hair generally is absolutely beautiful no matter the eye colour but there’s something that really stands out about red heads with blue or green eyes. You see it so rarely that it really jumps out when you do.

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/08/2020 13:15

I thought red hair and blue eyes was the most common combination too, but then I'm in Scotland so pale skin and blue eyes probably more common, especially away from the west coast and the obvs red hair more common too.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 13/08/2020 13:16

I can't find a link, but I recall reading about a facial recognition ID system that was developed in Japan a few years ago, which automatically flagged up any user with blue or green eyes as suspicious and possibly attempting to breach security/defraud the system.

“ I thought red hair and blue eyes was the most common combination too, but then I'm in Scotland so pale skin and blue eyes probably more common, especially away from the west coast and the obvs red hair more common too.”

And when you meet a red head with blue eyes, you are looking at the rarest colour combination of all for human beings. Around 17 per cent of people have blue eyes, and when combined with 1-2 per cent having red hair, the odds of having both traits are around 0.17 per cent. That's 13 million people, out of the 7.6 billion on Earth. So with numbers this low, could redheads with blue eyes actually go extinct?

Goodoldfashionedploverboy · 13/08/2020 13:18

I have bright green eyes - people have always commented on them.

Both my parents have brown eyes. When I was younger I wanted my green eyes to be brown like theirs.

LittleMissRedHat · 13/08/2020 13:18

Change17

Her hair is gorgeous and because she is typically pale, her eyes are very clear. and when she gets mad, she sure as heck stands out! She's a veritable poster girl for the stereotypical red-head! Grin Love her to pieces!

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/08/2020 13:21

I have 3 siblings with red/blue so just thought it was normal. None of my parents 12 grandchildren have red hair but we have one of the great grandchildren with the reddest of hair and bluest of eyes. So i guess I still didn't think it was unusual.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 13/08/2020 13:22

I have green eyes. When I was a child, every time we went to visit a family we knew (with children of similar ages to us), the father would make a beeline for me to look at my green eyes. It was because he, too, had green eyes (which he obviously thought was a great attribute). I found it REALLY embarrassing and odd. As I have recently read that green eyes are the most rare colour, I realise he probably didn't meet many people with them.

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/08/2020 13:22

So with numbers this low, could redheads with blue eyes actually go extinct?

They've clearly never been to Scotland :o

I don't think i've seen a redhead with anything other than blue eyes when I think about it, and I see a lot of redheads!

LioneIRichTea · 13/08/2020 13:23

Although blue eyes and black hair oof

That’s my DP Blush he has Celtic heritage. They’re more bluey grey though than Paul Hollywood blues.

Tlollj · 13/08/2020 13:24

@BeingATwatItsABingThing
Your dd has the rarest combination of eye /hair colour in the world. She’s very lucky. ( same as me ! )🤣

baroqueandblue · 13/08/2020 13:24

Is your MIL related to Eva Braun by any chance?

MarieeBarone · 13/08/2020 13:25

She just sounds excited that she and the baby might have that in common.
