I saw what one supposedly was last night on TV, but for the life of me I don't remember what programme. Perhaps BBC World News on PBS?

The one with the thick horizontal bars was a death statistic. The one that Scrotus said showed we were 'winning'; deaths as a proportion of cases, rather than deaths as a proportion of population. We're definitely NOT 'winning' that one.

They spoke about some other graphs but I don't remember if they identified them specifically as some of the papers he was waving around.

Roussette · 05/08/2020 17:18

So agree with that analysis Across. Absolutely spot on.

Just been watching the Sally Q. Yates testimony. She is so excellent.

Graham, Kennedy (what an ass) and the other Republicans were another matter.

'How did it come to this? A virus a thousand times smaller than a dust mote has humbled and humiliated the planet’s most powerful nation. America has failed to protect its people, leaving them with illness and financial ruin. It has lost its status as a global leader. It has careened between inaction and ineptitude. The breadth and magnitude of its errors are difficult, in the moment, to truly fathom.'

Could be nothing to do with Trump, but this is potentially interesting:
"New York Attorney General Letitia James will make a “major national announcement” tomorrow morning at 11:30 am EST."

mobile.twitter.com/robertjdenault/status/1291157276347244544

"Unclear what this is about, but strange it comes within 1 hour of NYT dropping a major story that Manhattan DA subpoenaed/obtained Trump’s Deutsche Bank records, and weeks after New York DFS fined the same division of Deutsche for work with Epstein. Is this related? Stay tuned."

"Should reiterate—we have no clue if this is Trump-related. AG James could be announcing a number of things tomorrow that might qualify as national and urgent (elections, census, etc).

Still, to announce this within 1 hour of this NYT story and have it be unrelated would be odd."

mobile.twitter.com/robertjdenault/status/1291159709307871234

NYT story referred to is this one:

"NY prosecutors subpoenaed President Trump’s bank, Deutsche Bank. It’s a sign that their inquiry into his business is broader than previously known."

All Australia very proud of Jonathan Swan. His dad is a doctor and highly regarded health reporter.

babydisney · 06/08/2020 04:09

Don't live in the US or even near, the US has scared me over the last 4 years, not a trump supporter but have an awful pit of the stomach feeling he will be voted in in for a second term 🙄😔

lionheart · 06/08/2020 11:26

Let's hope it's more like this babydisney.

"27 retiring lawmakers"

So many all at one time? Could it possibly be because they are tired of the whole Trump circus and just want out? If I were a Republican in congress or senate, I wouldn't want to be part of the remains of the once-proud party if he loses, and I definitely wouldn't want to be part of the shambles if he wins.

Roussette · 06/08/2020 13:06

Jonathon Swan is wonderful, now following him on Twitter.

He just has that sort of face that can do bemusement, bafflement and disbelief soooooo well Grin

PerkingFaintly · 06/08/2020 14:23

The alarming thing about commentary on Swan's interview is how many people see it as unusual.Shock

This is the standard political interviewing should be.

Indeed in the UK they used to be (and still sometimes are), and this is the reason Johnson hid in a fridge and preferred to be empty-chaired on Andrew Neil (on the grounds of"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than open your mouth and remove all doubt.")

Swan's interview is comparatively tame compared to Paxman, and even to Maitlis, Guru-Murthy, Jon Snow, etc.

Roussette · 06/08/2020 15:11

Totally agree Perking. I wonder if Swan attends the Pressers? Well... if he did... I bet he won't be allowed again!

I am amused by how Trump was sat. It is how I would be sat on one of those tiny toddler chairs!

BoJo is fine when he can do his bluster and soundbites. Useless when he is being drilled down on an answer to a question.

I swear there was something on the World Service today about Trump signing executive orders to reduce regulations about environmental protection, but I can't find anything about that happening yesterday or today. Was I dreaming, or were they talking about some previous rolling back of Obama's regulations?
