I believe "they" are that mysterious cohort who ring up the President, call him Sir and tell him he's changed their lives for the better

Lweji · 29/08/2020 08:52

And seem to cry a lot too.

from the article..
'They're all saying 'we want Ivanka,'" Trump added, motioning to the crowd and eliciting loud cheers. "I don't blame them'
Can you imagine ivanka debating Kamala Harris...butterfly on a wheel🦋

It's going to get messy.

Anniegetyourgun · 29/08/2020 18:01

I'm a little suspicious of some of these Republicans who have lost their taste for Trumpism - more, I think, the rat/sinking ship motivation than a sudden attack of conscience, at least with those who are up for re-election (or have books to sell). I can see the unspeakable McConnell not trying too hard to rein in the defectors because it's more important to him to retain a Senate majority than to prop up a more-or-less doomed President. If he can tie up a Biden administration sufficiently to knock their credibility the GOP would be back in with a more palatable candidate in 2024.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 29/08/2020 18:51

I hope that there will be enough voters who have lost their taste for Trump for that not to happen. I am not saying that I am confident that there will be, but it's a "cross your fingers and pray hard" thing at present.

Reluctantly giving Trump his due, I think he did try to say her name right once or twice.

He just has a speech impediment. Maybe we ought not to mock the afflicted?

(Only joking!)

'Speaker Pelosi and Chairman Schiff Statement on Cancellation of Election Security Briefings by Office of the Director of National Intelligence.'

lionheart · 30/08/2020 01:32

'“The Office of the Director of National Intelligence has informed us that it will no longer provide briefings to Members of Congress, including the House and Senate Intelligence committees, on foreign efforts to interfere in our upcoming election. This is a shocking abdication of its lawful responsibility to keep the Congress currently informed, and a betrayal of the public’s right to know how foreign powers are trying to subvert our democracy. This intelligence belongs to the American people, not the agencies which are its custodian. And the American people have both the right and the need to know that another nation, Russia, is trying to help decide who their president should be. '

AcrossthePond55 · 30/08/2020 01:44

This is getting worse and worse. Where is our 'Deep Throat'? Where is SOMEONE inside 'The Regime' with principles who believes in good governance and democracy and Country above themselves? It's like the 'open gates' of honesty and information that we expect between us, The People, and our elected representatives are clanging shut, one by one.

On a better note; DS2's 1st covid test came back negative. We aren't changing anything since he could 'turn positive' anytime in the remaining week of his quarantine, but at least he can call his friend (who has a disabled young son) and tell them they're in the clear since he last saw them the day after he last was at work.

Roussette · 30/08/2020 07:51

Pleased to hear that Across with your son... not too long to go now, and hope he is coping with his quarantine.

Stopping the intel reports is pretty shocking, reading Nancy Pelosi's statement... can she actually do anything, can't the Office of NI be forced to provide them? (total ignorance here, sorry)

That's good news Across. The waiting must be stressful.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 30/08/2020 13:05

I am glad to read that, Across. I had my fingers crossed for him, and for you all.

Last night on the World Service two programmes back-to-back took apart the absurd "35% cure" claim from Trump and his new lackey about convalescent plasma. The claim was demolished just before midnight on "More or Less" on the basis of the maths, and then again just after midnight on "The Science Hour" on the basis of the methodology. It was a complete hatchet job such as I have never heard the BBC apply to a world leader before: very polite, very thorough, very damning.

AcrossthePond55 · 30/08/2020 15:15

www.npr.org/2020/08/29/907498065/director-of-national-intelligence-cancels-election-security-briefings-democrats-

So I guess the Senate and House Intel Ctees will still get written reports, but not verbal briefings. IDK what makes verbal 'better' than written, but I can only surmise that any written report will be heavily 'edited' by The Regime ahead of release to Congreess and/or that in a verbal briefing questions may be asked or information may be given inadvertently that The Regime wants kept quiet.

Scrotus says it's because there are 'leakers' on the House Committee. Soooo, you can 'leak' a verbal briefing but you can't 'leak' info from a written report? What a maroon.

It's all about controlling the information he doesn't want them to see. You can damn bet that Nunes & Rubio will get 'verbal briefings' of their very own.

AcrossthePond55 · 30/08/2020 15:20

Thanks all for the good wishes for DS2. His last day of quarantine is this coming Friday. He's doing pretty good but I can see that he is depressed and feeling 'caged up'. We're just trying to keep his spirits up as best we can, reminding him that it will be over, it's not forever.

Phase III trial of Oxford vaccine in the U.S. is abruptly halted. FDA is deciding whether to bypass U.S. trials by relying on the U.K.'s trial of 10,000 people.

is that to speed up the authorisation or to hamper it?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 30/08/2020 19:09

Speed the vaccine being available in the US: Trump wants it out well before November 3rd, doesn't he. So the FDA guidelines and previous regulations will be ignored, and the FDA's reputation will be lost for between ten and fifty years depending how many people die as a result.
