So he was appointed well into the pandemic, when it was already clear that the postal service might be vital to running an election.

PerkingFaintly · 16/08/2020 14:02

Trump is thick, but the Bannons and Millers and Putins aren't. They're perfectly capable of foreseeing that to control the USPS is to control much of the 2020 election.

lionheart · 16/08/2020 14:11

A properly functioning postal service has an impact on everyone, not just in relation to voting, so I think this will backfire. I am seeing people commenting on delayed medications and so on ...

@Roussette

I'm not sure he died of covid, in that I read somewhere he had had a fall and a brain bleed or something.
Robert Trump was reported to be unwell more than a month ago. It was him, rather than Donald Trump who was named in the legal action to stop Mary Trumps book (Even tho it was definitely at Donald's behest) and it was noted in news articles at the time that he had recently been hospitalised
Lweji · 16/08/2020 15:33

Obama did point out that people depended on the postal service to receive their pensions, etc.

It may give them extra motivation to vote...

BruceAndNosh · 16/08/2020 16:01

It is getting so worrying that Trump is prepared to do anything and everything to ensure that he wins in November. I'm beginning to think that only serious incapacity will stop him.
Please note I am not suggesting anyone do him personal harm

Would Trump do the same if the situation was reversed? Not sure

" The Democratic-run House on Sunday demanded that leaders of the U.S. Postal Service testify at an emergency oversight hearing Aug. 24 on mail delays as concerns grow that the Trump White House is trying to undermine the agency during the coronavirus pandemic while states expand mail-in voting options for the November presidential election. Hello lifesabitch.

AcrossthePond55 · 16/08/2020 20:55

So there was a quick 'blurb' on my phone saying that the USPS 'isn't going to remove any collection boxes for the next 90 days". That's lovely. But the REAL problem is that they're removing the high speed sorting machines that move the mail faster.

Removing collection boxes may mean you have to travel further to drop your ballot in the box, but in most places the mailman picks up your mail from either your door or from the 'group' mail box. Not many of us really have to walk to a corner mail box. Those have been long gone. Removing the machines means that it will take longer to get to its destination after you've dropped it.

It's a bullshit tactic to make people think they're actually 'getting something'. But it's like getting an apple for dessert when you're used to having cake.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 16/08/2020 21:30

So the present Postmaster General has a vested interest (in the proper meaning of the word) in it failing.

Ain't that just peachy!

From the Huffington post link above:

DeJoy stands to profit from an implosion of the Postal Service. CNN reported earlier this week that he continues to hold a $30 million equity stake in his former company, XPO Logistics, a USPS contractor, which could conceivably partner with a competitor if the agency stumbles.

I would say that is a conflict of interest writ large.

I watched an exchange between Tapper and an official from the Administration. He flatly denied that any sorting machines had been removed. Jake Tapper said there definitely was and he asked his researchers to verify.
On air, he read out a statement from someone in USPS (not sure who) who confirmed that yes indeed 6 high speed sorting machines had been removed in one State.
This guy then blustered and said they probably need replacing and it's part of the plan that Obama put in place...

Yeah right...

Lies lies lies and double dealing. I am so sick of it!!!

Roll on November.

lionheart · 17/08/2020 03:09

I can see why he feels the need to cheat:

nymag.com/intelligencer/article/donald-trump-reelection-campaign-2020.html

"Even Trump was finding it more difficult to believe the fiction that everything was going great, and easier and easier to see the nihilistic wisdom of open warfare with the Postal Service in a way that might both cut Democrats’ likely vote-by-mail margins and delegitimize the election more generally. His closest advisers were now telling him that the bad numbers and bad reviews weren’t the fruits of Fake News or a deep-state hoax but a genuine reflection of what could happen in November. Though it took some time for him to accept it. The president recently asked a second senior White House official to review Biden’s performance after watching him speak. “I said, ‘I think if we lose to this guy, we’re really pathetic,’ ” the official told me. “The president said to me, ‘I’m not losing to Joe Biden.’ I said, ‘You’re losing to Joe Biden.’ "

TheNorthWestPawsage · 17/08/2020 07:36

DH and DC's votes are accepted by email, sent from here in UK.

Absentee ballots don't need to be returned through the mail. Here are other options.

I have no idea what sort of young man Barron Trump is (and have no desire to know) but he now makes his dad look "vertically challenged "!

MOMENTS AGO: President Trump, First Lady Melania, and Barron return to the White House.

It's never his fault, is it?

I've got a strong suspicion that Trump will avoid standing directly next to his son in public in future. He's so sensitive about his height

Roussette · 17/08/2020 09:12

NorthWest

Poor kid, what a poisoned chalice he has inherited.

Is it just me... but I loathe it when Trumpy does that fist pump thing. It really sets me in a bad mood!

Has anyone else read Mary trump's book?

TheNorthWestPawsage · 17/08/2020 10:21

Sorry Rousette there are so many triggers where Trump is concerned!

I've not read Mary Trump's book. I saw somewhere that Bob Woodward has a new one soon - I think it's title is "Rage", to follow on from "Fear" which I have (mostly!) read.

PerkingFaintly · 17/08/2020 10:29

Mrsmorton, if you've been dedicated enough to read Mary Trump's book, I'd really love to hear your thoughts.

Any revelations? Or just more of the same?

Mrsmorton · 17/08/2020 10:57

There was a lot of "more of the same", it's not a heavy read but the thing that stood
Out for me was the utter narcissism and rewriting of history. It also dispels some myths about how Trump was bankrolled into the high life. The whole family is very unpleasant to be honest.

Mrsmorton · 17/08/2020 10:58

These paragraphs were like... yep. Absolutely recognise that.
