Thanks for that, Mrsm. That's actually quite a sad read.

If his parents had been poor instead of rich, he'd have just been some tedious bloke down the pub whose ridiculous stories no one believes.

Instead his parents gave him money and position, and other people have used him as their frontman ever since. Be it TV companies or the Mercers.

Can I ask, what are the myths which are dispelled?

My understanding is that he claims to be self-made.Shock

I also understand that his father continually bankrolled him (sometimes in underhand ways like buying casino chips) and after his father's death he continually took out loans and shafted the lenders (eg Deutsche Bank). And then it looks as though various Russians arrived as sugar-daddies.

So I'm wondering which of those is untrue!

Mrsmorton · 17/08/2020 11:30

You're absolutely right. It was a combination of undervaluing inheritance, removing people from wills, underhand casino chip buying. It sounds like he was actually "given" c$700million rather than the $1million he claims.

He got someone to sit his SATs for him (university entrance exams I assume?) then bribed his way into a better university than the one he was at. The whole thing is toxic.

There were no jaw dropping moments but it was revealing. I do recommend it. Smile

Heffalooomia · 17/08/2020 11:33

Trump is constructed entirely from lies, he has no choice but to carry on lying, he is all front and no substance, all he can do is try and maintain the facade.
In a sense he is self made, he fabricated himself from layers and layers of untruths woven and Stitched together, blasted with hot air until a mirage was formed

Fascinating insights here. Thanks MrsM and Cacaco (sorry for abbreciations of names!)

This bit particularly...
'His dad was horrible, a bully, but she says that’s why he’s in thrall to dictators as they remind him of his dad'

This so much makes sense. Gobsmackingly so. No one 'likes' Jong Un or Duterte, or Erdogan, or Putin... but Trump does. They are obviously bordering on evil men, but yet Trump seems to have an affinity with them.

His parents have a lot to answer for. He is so flawed, so in need of help, but sadly at his age nothing can change.

I am not sure it's an attempt to rig: the stats from previous elections show that Republicans are as likely to use mail-in votes as Democrats -- I would have expected older citizens to use them more, and the older demographic is more likely to vote Trump, or have I got that wrong?

I think it is an attempt to get the election declared void. What would happen at that point, constitutionally, I have no idea.

Asking I don't think there are any specific references to voiding an election in the Constitution, I don't think the Founding Fathers could even conceive of it. Any attempts to do so would be via lawsuit to get the results thrown out. But just as with Bush v Gore in 2000, any lawsuit would be rushed through the lower courts to SCOTUS in record time to get things settled before Inauguration Day.

BUT, the Constitution does say that a POTUS & VP must leave office when their term is up. There are NO exceptions, not one. So that mean that Scrotus & Pence would have to leave office on 21 Jan 2021 period, even if the case had not yet been decided. At that point the Speaker of the House would become POTUS according to the rules of succession until the whole debacle was settled. SotH is Nancy Pelosi. Scrotus would turn blue and shit a plaid rabbit if that happened.

IMO, if for some reason the election were to be legally voided, I'd assume that there would be a 2nd election. I don't think a court would say "Oh yes, that was a rigged election so we'll just keep Scrotus in office for another 4 years".

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 17/08/2020 15:34

I do hope that's right. I also hope someone points it out to Tramp before he is fully committed to fucking the country up so thoroughly. Not that he'd leave the White House voluntarily, but he could be literally removed in handcuffs at that point.

AcrossthePond55 · 17/08/2020 16:04

And thanks, North for the new Randy. I really needed it! Between Scrotus, the election, and the heatwave we're having with only a swamp cooler (day highs 103-108/night lows low 80s) I am not doing well and needed the boost.

I keep the words of Julian of Norwich close to me: “And all shall be well. And all manner of things shall be exceeding well.”

AcrossthePond55 · 17/08/2020 16:09

..... points it out to Tramp before he is fully committed to fucking the country up so thoroughly. Not that he'd leave the White House voluntarily

Agree. I think though that he is so short-sighted and so used to getting his own way that he can't conceive of not just being allowed to stay in office. I think that Scrotus thinks that, like Pharaoh, all he has to say is "So it shall be written, so it shall be done". But another Egypt-centric quote is "'Denial' isn't just a river in Egypt".

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 17/08/2020 16:12

I came here because but I see it's already been done! Worth repeating, though Grin I remember seeing Camelot on stage in London, in 1964, in what must have been the first of many visits for me to the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Different times, different customs.. Ah well. Sad

TheSparklyPussycat · 17/08/2020 16:15

Across, that sounds unbearable.
What's a swamp cooler?

TheNorthWestPawsage · 17/08/2020 17:57

Oh DH and I were talking about swamp coolers last week in our 34c temps (or 93f as he insists on still using here in UK 🙄)
They are "evaporative cooling systems" - basically blow air across water to cool it and old style fit in windows. They don't seem to have them in the UK probably because our windows generally won't fit them?

Trump just tweeted this about drop boxes:
"Some states use “drop boxes” for the collection of Universal Mail-In Ballots. So who is going to “collect” the Ballots, and what might be done to them prior to tabulation? A Rigged Election? So bad for our Country. Only Absentee Ballots acceptable!"

And yet... in Florida where he now votes...

Drop boxes are very prevalent in Florida, especially in Pinellas County, which has been run by Republican election supervisors for a long time. People love them.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 17/08/2020 18:08

Once again, this could backfire for Trump.

75% of 2016 primary votes in Pinellas County, FL (St. Pete/Clearwater) were by mail.

Here's @VotePinellas Elections Supervisor Julie Marcus yesterday on #BattlegroundFlorida on importance and convenience of dropoff sites

I love that quotation Across.

Heffalooomia · 17/08/2020 18:26

he could be literally removed in handcuffs at that point
what a glorious sight that would be, I cant wait to see what happens to him and his entourage of village idiots

AcrossthePond55 · 17/08/2020 19:20

Swamp coolers are just NOT effective in very high temps, they'll only cool your house 15-20 degrees and that's with very low humidity. In high humidity areas they're pretty much useless.

My understanding is that the UK (or parts of it) can get pretty humid. That's probably why they aren't used in the UK.

DH has gone to rent a big-ass generator. We're going to power up our cavavan and decamp to it when it gets unbearable. It has AC.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 17/08/2020 19:22

I suspect that being in the White House without legal right to be there is aggravated trespass at the very least... They shoot people who try to break in, after all.

AcrossthePond55 · 17/08/2020 19:27

On the voting front: the good thing to remember is that each county is responsible for designating drop boxes so at least he can't demand they be removed, unlike telling his butt-buddy LeJoy ("NoJoy") to rip out postboxes.

He's just starting to throw everything at the wall now to be able to say 'Told ya, it's rigged, fake, fraud' when he loses and hopes that something has already stuck to the wall before then. This election is going to end up in court, one way or the other. I'd be willing to bet my collection of "Fuck Trump" stickers on that!

And by the way, those drop boxes are used for ANY ballot mailed out to a voter. It's not like there's a fucking sign on it that says "Only 'mail in' ballots here. Don't you dare put your 'absentee' one in this box!!!".

AcrossthePond55 · 17/08/2020 19:35

Oh, the idea of seeing him being dragged out of the WH in cuffs just gives my heart the pitter-pats! But TBH I think whoever was in charge would do their best to avoid a public spectacle. They'd probably erect one of those canopies in front of the WH portico and frog-march him into a car.

Although, in the end like most cowards he'll probably just slink out of sight into a car with a cat's bum face. And then the tweet storm will really start.
