Why does MN hate smokers so much?

PalmTreesPurple · 25/07/2020 16:07

Not all of MN of course but I’ve seen a lot of negativity about it. I understand not liking smoking yourself because of the health issues, I’m a smoker after giving up for nearly a year and I was stupid to start again but it’s a nasty addiction to kick. I only smoke outside, in designated smoking areas, and never around people who are eating/close to other people. I also don’t smoke in places like parks or walking through town. It is either in my garden or in a designated spot. Would a smoker like that bother you, or is it people who don’t have any courtesy, or do you just not like smokers in general?

Not being aggressive at all, just very interested.

Would also like to know if anyone on here smokes themselves?

@Lovewithalampost

A lot of smokers here proving the point about smoking and stupidity ‘but I went to university’. Intelligence and being a moron can go hand in hand. Like my friend the doctor who is clearly intelligent starting smoking at 25 = clearly also a stupid moron with no sense.
But the argument was that smokers have a low IQ. It is very unlikely likely that a doctor or Cambridge student would have allw IQ compared to the average. Your argument makes sense if you mean common sense though, which I agree, plenty of high IQ people sadly lack! A friend of mine (Oxford medical grad) said that many junior doctors smoked when she was training. She did too, but not a great deal. It was the stress she said, which again, ties in with the MH link I think.

Also, I'm sure you didn't know, but the word 'moron' I believe is considered a bit un PC. Just to let you know that.

DisobedientHamster · 25/07/2020 17:59

Whenever I see a smoker I think - so how much is this going to cost the NHS? It's great to hear how much less stressed you feel op, but WE will all have to pay for it.

Do you feel this way about old people who live long enough to develop health problems? Hmm OMG, what a burden! Think of the cost to councils due to people who live so long they get dementia. We have to pay for it!

IncrediblySadToo · 25/07/2020 18:00

My sister has eaten her way into morbid obesity. She’s used a considerable amount of NHS resources. You wouldn’t deride her as you do me

You have to be joking.

On MN nobody is hated & abused more than the overweight/obese.

No one.

Mywifeandkids1 · 25/07/2020 18:03

@IncrediblySadToo lucky there are so many people in this world like those on Mumsnet 🤔😊

Mywifeandkids1 · 25/07/2020 18:03

*perfect people sorry

Itisbetter · 25/07/2020 18:04

Intelligence and being a moron can go hand in hand. no, a moron is someone who lacks intelligence. It’s a revolting disablist term.

ChasingRainbows19 · 25/07/2020 18:04

Haven’t read the full thread

I hate smoking as close family were killed by smoking related diseases and now my dad will be too. I grew up in a smoking household and ALWAYS was ill with my lungs. I left home and guess what no lung illness since. So you know it’s a nasty habit that can affect your health or those around you.

It stinks! If I go to relatives who smoke inside or even not when I’m there i have to come home and have a shower. My clothes, my hair everything.

I’m not bothered about people who chose to do it, the risks are fully obvious nowadays. Free world and all that. But not around me thanks.

Imtoooldforallthis · 25/07/2020 18:05

I have recently given up smoking after smoking for 35 years, stopped 6 weeks ago and not one person noticed, even my husband or teenage children until I told him a week after I'd stopped. I still can't beleve it.

Notredamn · 25/07/2020 18:05

*Do smokers think they don't smell?
*
Yes. They are really deluded. My ex used to think a quick walk round the garden or rinse of his hands would make it go away. It doesn't. It clings and covers everyone in the house in a cloud of ashtray smell. It would be so embarrassing being out with him if he'd been smoking.

84claire84 · 25/07/2020 18:05

Because it's gross and causes damage to the innocent people who have to breath your shit in.

Starbuggy · 25/07/2020 18:05

I hate it because it stinks and because most smokers apparently don’t consider cigarette butts to be litter so just drop them all over the place.

Mothermorph · 25/07/2020 18:07

When smoking was allowed in pubs and clubs I used to hate coming home and clothes and hair smelling of smoke. However if someone was outside smoking and it wasnt near me, it wouldnt offend me. I have other bad habits that I find really hard to give up so feel judgemental if I say smokers should just give up.

SimonJT · 25/07/2020 18:07

Can people please stop using the word moron, its a really horrible ableist term, its barely better than calling someone retarded.

Irreversible · 25/07/2020 18:07

I've never smoked a cigarette in my life, but I do think people are hypocritical and inconsistent when it comes to their attitude to smoking compared to other vices, and it is often tied to classism. We all know smoking is harmful to the smoker, but if they smoke at a distance from others the only person they are harming is themselves. Alcohol does far greater harm at a societal level (drink driving, strong links with domestic violence to name just a few) but it's an 'acceptable' drug, therefore it's okay. Smoking was once acceptable too - it's only fairly recently that it's become such a subject of horror and revulsion. And saying they are a drain on the NHS with associated health conditions can be applied to any lifestyle choice.

Oh, and although I hate the smell of cigarettes I definitely hate the smell of a lot of alcohol too, beer especially. 'Stink' is subjective.

whippetwoman · 25/07/2020 18:07

OP, I do not judge you at all.
I don’t mind smokers actually, the smell of cigarette smoke on a warm summer night or a cold winter one makes me feel nostalgic for my student days.

I know three smokers, who are kind, intelligent people. Life is complex and people become addicted for a variety of reasons that are individual and unique to that person. Yes, it’s healthier not to smoke but a little kindness and tolerance goes a long way.

Lovewithalampost · 25/07/2020 18:07

@DisobedientHamster sorry if your response to your friend starting into an addiction is ‘you do you babes’ mine is to be honest and say it’s completely stupid. We are still friends. Weight can creep on and before you know it you’re overweight. Taking up a instant filthy addictive activity is completely different. I’m sorry but your story about your friend all I can think is ‘how stupid’.

OverTheRainbow88 · 25/07/2020 18:08

I don’t like the amount Of money the NHS will have to spend on someone who chooses to smoke and knows all the health risks.

SugarNyx · 25/07/2020 18:08

Because it’s gross, stinks, selfish and harmful to everyone around you.

Mothermorph · 25/07/2020 18:09

I had a work colleague who insisted she didnt smell after having a smoke, but it was very obvious when she had just been on a cigarette break and I smelled it immediately as we worked very closely together. I'm not sure what gave her the idea it didnt smell.

PablosHoney · 25/07/2020 18:11

Less intelligent and a bit common 😱😂 wtf, I’m a non smoker and I think making statements like that make you sound stupid and yes common too

tectonicplates · 25/07/2020 18:11

Hmm

Getting old is a natural part of life.

Smoking isn't. It's completely unneccesary, and is a leading cause of avoidable illnesses and premature deaths.

@OverTheRainbow88

This is the thing. Smokers pump far more money into the treasury than most things. People pay for their NHS treatment.

I think smokers are the one of the few groups of people who can be vilified these days. That's why they get the most vicious of venom directed at them.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 25/07/2020 18:12

@Mywifeandkids1

I hope all these people with these views also think they same when they see over weight people, why would they eat so much sugar and fat with no gain? As a PP said. Also cost the NHS millions, also STINK. Same for drinkers but that’s socially acceptable, please see other threads about how much people drink each evening.
Is it a fact that all fat people STINK?

I don't mind if people smoke, but I absolutely hate having it wafted over me. I'm really not exaggerating when I say that one whiff of it gives me an instant headache and makes me feel sick. It could be connected to my parents both smoking when I was a child, or I must be intolerant to it. I don't know, but it's definitely a physical aversion rather than a psychological one.
