Why does MN hate smokers so much?

Not all of MN of course but I’ve seen a lot of negativity about it. I understand not liking smoking yourself because of the health issues, I’m a smoker after giving up for nearly a year and I was stupid to start again but it’s a nasty addiction to kick. I only smoke outside, in designated smoking areas, and never around people who are eating/close to other people. I also don’t smoke in places like parks or walking through town. It is either in my garden or in a designated spot. Would a smoker like that bother you, or is it people who don’t have any courtesy, or do you just not like smokers in general?

Not being aggressive at all, just very interested.

Would also like to know if anyone on here smokes themselves?

@SuperCaliFragalistic you know what the internet is like, full of bullshitters! never in real life have I been spoken to the way I have been ‘spoken’ to the way I’ve been ‘spoken’ to on the internet! The crap I’ve read here about it smokers is astounding, you can not categorise people’s personalities by the fact they smoke, not you Super but there is a poster on here that said smokers were nasty, or some other sorts of crap! I despair at people with such judgments, and I pity them!

My oh smokes occasionally and always outside. I can literally tell when he comes in the house he has been smoking despite being in another room. It stinks. He's always smoked but smokes way less. His clothes hair and hands stink and I can't be around them straight after he's smoked. For me that's the worst bit, the smell. Up to you to smoke and I know it's very hard to give up.

Ex smoker, don't hate smokers. But I hate having to be exposed to smokers smoke because of course they all smoke... Outside.

In flats, semi s terraces etc... Your smoke carries and we all breath in the extra 1000 pollutants on top of other pollutants.

Sometimes in flats every time one person smokes on their balcony, many more people have to quickly shut their windows. Your smoke carries. It's not an individual sport or hobby. Your taking everyone else who doesn't want it, with you.

could maybe compare excess alcohol consumption, but that's a small percentage of people who drink.

Not far off. About 14% of the population smoke and about 10% of the population misuse alcohol. Both tobacco and alcohol are "sin taxed", so both smokers and drinkers pay more into the state coffers than those who don't smoke or drink.

Champix, people, Champix ~ no will power needed. You just don't want to smoke any more, so you don't. I have spent thousands of pounds to inflict COPD on myself. Champix is a sodding miracle.

And a plus is that you will have really vivid dreams.

Cigarette smoke I agree is unpleasant to those who do not smoke

My mother gave up by just drinking ice cold water to numb her mouth and then going for a walk. (just in case it helps anyone)

But I think people underestimate how addictive it is & to just say those who do smoke are stupid and common is - well - just well. Interesting post from @SinkGirl

If you grabbed didn't the throat and squeezed, you are doing the same thing as when she walks through your smoke as it closes her airways.

Smoking is unhealthy, it stinks and I don’t like being subjected to other people’s smoke!

Childhood trauma involving hospitalisation and struggling to breathe due to severe asthma and connected to being around smokers growing up. Stuff like that never leaves you.

If I see a smoker in town I have to give them an extremely wide berth or else my toddler son inhales the smoke and that's something I'm not happy with at all. I feel like I'm forever crossing roads or changing my route somehow. Some people just want to walk along the street without a minute's thought as to the passers by breathing in their smoke. 'But it's only for a second' people say. Well sometimes I see ten smokers in one town trip so no it really adds up if you're not careful. I just hate it so much.

I stupidly let my next door neighbour hold my ds when he was a baby once and when she gave him back he stank of smoke, it was horrible. Never again.

OP if you want to give up I wish you all the luck. I gave up when I got married a year ago and have never looked back. No more snoring, have gone from 5k to 10k runs and flossing is much less gross! However I’m genuinely shocked by the vitriol on this thread towards smokers - I lost a parent to lung cancer - so understand more than most how devastating it can be. However - labelling people as common and unintelligent is just odd - the people I know who smoke include doctors, scientists and authors so guessing that’s not actually a thing My view is I mind my own business - unless someone asks! smelling smoke on someone is no more offensive than someone with a fondness for oud perfume and walking past a smoker in the street no more damaging than the exhaust fumes from crossing the road. To lecture otherwise is a bit ott - prepared to be ‘corrected’ on my views but not likely to change my option

Smokers smell bad even when they aren’t smoking, and it makes me feel sick to sit next to one (I have a sensitive stomach).

Most smokers seem to think it’s ok to litter.

Smokers choose to pay ££££ to damage their bodies, even knowing that this may mean their family suffers early bereavement. I despise that attitude and have never known a smoker I had any respect for.

You want to stop? Then stop. People manage to quit every day.

It stinks and kills you. Fair enough kill yourself but I don’t want to be I’ll be used of your choice.. my mum smoked through both pregnancies and I grew up with chain smoker Kare hrs who couldn’t afford basic things for us i have awful hayfever and spent years suffering every summer. I asked my mum to buy tablets but she ‘wasn’t paying for that!’ A colleague of mine didn’t give up when she was pregnant and I seriously judged her. I also got teased at school for smelling of smoke all the time but I couldn’t help it. I am Paranoid now about smelling. I had an argument with some fud a few years ago who lit up in a cashline queue. Yeah thanks for that when we can’t escape it’s just bloody selfish. I’ve also had a few outfits burned on nights out when smoking indoors was allowed.

It makes me feel nostalgic for my father. The smell of Benson and Hedges still makes me think he's here with us. Sadly, he will never meet his grandchildren, and he died a brutal death caused by smoking. So although I don't hate it, it makes me sad to watch young people smoke, because one day they'll be old and very sick and they'll die well before their time. He was so impossibly addicted. I miss him so much.

@SilverTotoro well done on giving up! Completely agree with you that the vitriol is odd, but then most things these days seem to involve a pretty huge amount of judgement of strangers.

It kills the smoker and 2nd and 3rd hand smoke kill innocent people who dont smoke.

Its antisocial and even in a designated spot the smells seeps everywhere else including inside doorways and on washing hanging outside. I hate opening my door and smelling it.

Smokers at work do hardly any work as they are outside having a fag every 30 minutes. A non smoker wouldn't be allowed to go outside to rest for the equivalent time.

Its toxic to the environment and fag butts are not biodegradable nor is the manufactuting process of said cigarettes not to mention the innocent workers killed and poisoned making them.

Dp is an ex smoker now vaper and he really hates the smell of cigarettes now it makes him sick he genuinely cant believe he used to love chain smoking.
