Why does MN hate smokers so much?

PalmTreesPurple · 25/07/2020 16:07

Not all of MN of course but I’ve seen a lot of negativity about it. I understand not liking smoking yourself because of the health issues, I’m a smoker after giving up for nearly a year and I was stupid to start again but it’s a nasty addiction to kick. I only smoke outside, in designated smoking areas, and never around people who are eating/close to other people. I also don’t smoke in places like parks or walking through town. It is either in my garden or in a designated spot. Would a smoker like that bother you, or is it people who don’t have any courtesy, or do you just not like smokers in general?

Not being aggressive at all, just very interested.

Would also like to know if anyone on here smokes themselves?

Because users can post really nasty unpleasant comments. Smokers unite the sanctimonious hatred of self righteous cunts. Sometimes it's quite entertaining to see how low these smug fuckers will go.

The exact same thing can be said about non smokers.

Inappropriatefemale · 30/07/2020 16:12

ThisFucker how do you know whose a smoker just because they post?! I’ve heard it all now

JessStu · 30/07/2020 16:13

the thing with being a non smoker but having friends who smoke, is that things have to be planned around smoking. Where can they stop off for fags, are there exits nearby so they can go off and smoke, no we can't go and get our places at the concert yet as I need to stand here and smoke. Nights out are marred by smoking as they are in and out of smoking areas all night and if you don't go with them and breathe in all the smoke then you become separated. It's just shit.

Not in my experience. The couple of friends I have that smoke just slope off whenever they need a nicotine fix. We don't plan anything around them.

Inappropriatefemale · 30/07/2020 16:14

Well there are other things to do with friends like visit them at home, speak on the phone etc etc! You don’t just not be mates with someone because they do something you don’t, it’s not like they’re killing people, unless they are!

I’m not a huge drinker so my mates that do drink know not to invite me to pub binges etc etc, we work around it!

Notredamn · 30/07/2020 16:17

@JessStu I think PP was talking about non smokers.

Exactly. I tend to avoid narrow minded, judgemental busy bodies. Some of my friends smoke, some don't, some drink, some don't, big deal - the key is that they are all decent people.

JessStu · 30/07/2020 16:19

Apologies @Thisfucker then. It seems we are in agreement Grin

Notredamn · 30/07/2020 16:21

@Inappropriatefemale I would never not be friends with people because they smoke- how would I haven been able to give examples of how smokers dictate plans if I wasn't friends with any?
The amount of times I've been left sitting in restaurants by myself though because they can't get through a meal out without smoking. It makes me feel like a mug tbh

Mittens030869 · 30/07/2020 16:37

There is certainly much less smoking than there used to be; in the past I remember being the only non-smoker in groups of friends/students at the pub. Because the done thing was to drink whilst puffing on a fag. (I did once experiment with a couple of fags, but thought the better of it.)

I don't judge, because I've always drunk more than I should (yes, due to MH issues, in my case PTSD because of childhood SA), so I understand why it might be hard to give it up. Comparing smoking to obesity is ridiculous, though. If I have tiramisu for desert, it's not going to give you calories and increase your waistline, is it?

Whereas I can smell second hand smoke and it can be unpleasant. And it does always smell, sorry but it does.

Inappropriatefemale · 30/07/2020 16:45

Smoking deffo isn’t as common anymore, everyone has a vape these days but I think they probably harm the lungs too! Saves the cash but not the lungs!

gamerchick · 30/07/2020 16:49

Might put you over the limit to drive a car though. That might put a crimp in your day if there was an accident.

Mittens030869 · 30/07/2020 16:55

Yes, if I was going to drive. But when I go out for a meal with my DH at an Italian restaurant and have a couple of glasses of Pinot and a tiramisu, we would be going in a taxi so that we didn't have to worry about that.

JeffreyJefferson · 30/07/2020 17:01

If there’s people around then it’s very selfish. no one wants to smell your stinking smoke

JeffreyJefferson · 30/07/2020 17:02

vaping is selfish too. no one wants to smell your strawberry candy floss artificial smelling vapour all in their face ew ew ew ew ew

JeffreyJefferson · 30/07/2020 17:02

in public i mean

Tough. The basis for banning smoking indoors was the impact of passive smoking on health. Vaping has zero impact and objecting to it’s the same as telling you your perfume’s offensive.
Shameless29 · 30/07/2020 17:17

Just wow at some of the judgement on this thread Shock everyone has bad habits, because you smoke does not automatically make you vile/ less intelligent / a horrible selfish person as some of these posts suggest! Bigger things in life to worry about than neighbours that smoke Confused

strawberrypip · 31/07/2020 08:14

@Inappropriatefemale to be fair, I remember a thread on here a few months ago someone was having a debate with her friend who was a smoker and had kids. the poster thought the friend was selfish because she put smoking before buying things for the children. the smokers on mumsnet piled on for 15 pages telling the OP that the friend was right because she could spend her money on what she wanted, that the children were not entitled to new shoes anymore than the friend was entitled to fags and called the OP every name under the sun. go figure Hmm

however saying that, no need for some of the comments about smokers on this thread either

JessStu · 31/07/2020 19:39

Comparing smoking to obesity is ridiculous, though. If I have tiramisu for desert, it's not going to give you calories and increase your waistline, is it?

Comparing obesity to smoking is often when someone mentions how much smokers cost the NHS, by people who fail to recognise how much tax smokers pay. Obese people also cost the NHS, but they don't pay extra taxes to cover those potential costs, unlike smokers.

Amen! Smokers pay for so much stuff in public coffers...Not ideal but very true. The NHS would be stuffed without that tax money ... then if we go like the USA you’d be billed £100k to give birth. You’d probably prefer someone occasionally smoking near you frankly... well I know I would compared to US health care bills....
SuperCaliFragalistic · 01/08/2020 23:40

All those who think smokers are stupid, I presume you don't drink alcohol or caffeine or do anything that might have a negative impact on your health for a short term "fix"? We all do things for enjoyment occasionally despite the negative impact. Its just that smoking is very addictive. It doesn't make smokers stupid. Many highly intelligent people have been smokers at times.

MrBennsshop · 01/08/2020 23:48

You can hardly compare caffeine consumption with smoking, that's ridiculous Grin You could maybe compare excess alcohol consumption, but that's a small percentage of people who drink.

Smokers may not be stupid, but smoking is stupid.

I hate smokers but all my friends and my partner are smokers so I have to put up with it
