Masks - GET A GRIP.

Ok.

So. Lots of whinging about masks at the moment as BoJo finally hauls his arse into gear and says that you have to wear them in the shops and on public transport.

In Catalunya where I live masks are obligatory. Every time you are in public. Including in the street. Inside and out. The exceptions are

Medical conditions (you need a paper justifying this)
When playing sport
Children under the age of 6
If eating or drinking

If you don't comply - 100 euro fine. No arguments.

Most people here were already wearing masks anyway (because we saw the horror at the beginning of the pandemic here and we know what a real lockdown is like - not allowed out at all, children locked inside for nearly 3 months, etc)

People arent whining and complaining nor imagining how they can invent aome excuse to mean that the rules don't apply to them and the overwhelming majority of people are wearing them all the time.

Tourists not so much but they getting fined. Good.

So England. PLEASE. Stop with the selfishness. Literally dozens of countries have mandatory mask wearing and citizens comply because they care about each other and don't spend their time acting entitled and "I'm all right Jack"

There are articles in the European press about this. Literally "English people are selfish - is it any wonder they are so resistant to wear masks". It's embarrassing. As a nation, as a society, it's time to grow up and just put the mask on like everyone else.

English people. You aren't special. You are starting to look like the kid who gets thw whole class detention because they just keep on breaking the rules.

Wear the mask. Please. It's for the safety of everyone.

And if you ABSOLUTELY MUST come to Spain on holiday, even more so.

I'm English and I haven't heard anyone moaning , or are you just looking for an argument

Are you being ironic? MN has been full of nothing but speshul people moaning.

However, I very much doubt that the foreign press has picked up on MN and suspect the OP is making that bit up.

And why do you think England or the UK needed to cope Spain's over the top lockdown? Stopping people going out for exercise or making them use one supermarket only would have had zero effect on the number of cases or deaths.

However, I generally agree with the OP that people need to grow up about this - and fast. But as I mentioned on another thread it looks like people have already taken the advice on board and are already wearing masks in shops.

Moonmelodies · 14/07/2020 15:15

Just wear a Halloween mask if that's all you have.

OLGADEEPOLGA · 14/07/2020 15:15

I don't like them. I will wear one if I go into a shop (which I will avoid at all costs). I can however discuss how I don't like wearing them for as long as I like. I'll do it but I don't have to like it.

cologne4711 · 14/07/2020 15:15

copy not cope

Lepetitpiggy · 14/07/2020 15:15

I have my own personal medical reason for struggling with masks - not mental health, physical, and yet I really really want to. It's not a 'good enough' reason that I can get exemption from wearing one, so I'm doing my best.

Changednamesorry · 14/07/2020 15:16

@SockYarn

Read different newspapers. Yes it was rough but we understood why it was needed. We didn't "roll over and comply".... We agreed, for the most part.

We acted like adults and worked as a community. We thought as a group not as individuals.

And we watched in horror as tthe British and US and Brazilian governments failed to protect their citizens at all, and convinced them that it was in the name of" freedom"

Threads about enforced mask wearing are naturally going to draw people with disabilities or health conditions who may struggle to wear them. Just as threads about changes to child benefits or free nursery hours will draw people who utilise them.

ShitStain · 14/07/2020 15:17

😷👏🏻

Babs709 · 14/07/2020 15:17

Why does “freedom” have to be in quote marks? You weren’t allowed to leave your house, we were. Probably quite literal freedom there I’d say.

YgritteSnow · 14/07/2020 15:17

My problem is less with the masks, and more with all the people apparently slathering with their eagerness to berate others over their attitiudes to mask wearing, to be quite frank.

I genuinely believe you have a point here and I certainly don't want to be among that crew. But at the same time I am baffled by the moaning. I might just keep quiet now though. I don't want that rep!

HesterShaw1 · 14/07/2020 15:17

I've only read the first page but it does make me raise an eyebrow a bit at the masochistic pleasure lots of Brits - or at least, lots of MNers - seem to get over the idea that the entire world is laughing at us.

I will wear a face covering where I am obliged to by law. Other than that I'll stick to my common sense, thanks.

I saw a load of divers in our local harbour setting off on their dives on their dive RIB, wearing drysuits and face masks. I did laugh at that, I admit.

YgritteSnow · 14/07/2020 15:18

Just wear a Halloween mask if that's all you have.

That made me Grin

Rosehip10 · 14/07/2020 15:18

This just sounds like a.) a xenophobic rant about "the English" b.) similar to the lakes/Cornish type "I fucking hate tourists" type posts.

I'm not sure Spain can bask and lord over others in how covid has been handled their to be honest.

Grow up OP Biscuit

SockYarn · 14/07/2020 15:18

more with all the people apparently slathering with their eagerness to berate others over their attitiudes to mask wearing

They're the same people who were posting STAY THE FUCK AT HOME in March, and shouting about people flouting the roolz in April, and sagely predicting second spikes every weekend in May, and tutting and hissing at people sitting on park benches to have a snack.

Some people have a very good reason not to wear a mask That reason - unless you are a police officer - is NONE of your business. You have no right to ask.

Dahlietta · 14/07/2020 15:18

Read different newspapers.

I think you could consider taking your own advice there...

Clavinova · 14/07/2020 15:18

We acted like adults and worked as a community. We thought as a group not as individuals.

"Spain’s State of Alarm ends with more than 1.2 million fines and 9,000 arrests for non-compliance."

Daisychains20 · 14/07/2020 15:18

I think a major problem that people are reluctant to wear them who do not have health conditions is because it’s states on the government site that and I quote

‘Evidence suggests that wearing a face covering does not protect you. However, if you are infected but have not yet developed symptoms, it may provide some protection for others you come into close contact with’

🤷🏼‍♀️ People are very confused and are unsure if it helps or not. It’s very contradicting.

hardtimeuphere · 14/07/2020 15:18

I'm completely for masks but found your post patronising, rude and prejudice.

strawberrypip · 14/07/2020 15:19
  1. mind ya business

  2. dont tarnish an entire country with the same brush. a lot of us dont give a shit we have to wear a mask now and are actually questioning why it has taken so long to become mandatory over here

  3. mind ya business

  4. ...oh wait I've already mentioned mind ya business

HesterShaw1 · 14/07/2020 15:19

And personally I don't think that locking kids up for months is anything to aspire to, myself.

MaudesMum · 14/07/2020 15:19

And if you ABSOLUTELY MUST come to Spain on holiday, even more so. Do I take it that you - presumably speaking for the whole of Spain - aren't welcoming tourists this year? Just checking, before I work out where to go.

Iwonder08 · 14/07/2020 15:20

Who do you think you are to tell people how they should react on the latest government advice?!
There is publicly available research both proving the benefits of wearing masks and denying it.
BBC this am had interviewed yet another scientist who said 'it might stop some particles of the virus'. Some people might think it is not quite black and white.
There is absolutely nothing about this virus that is 100%confirmed.the information changes on daily basis

Standardy · 14/07/2020 15:20

I agree, it's pathetic
