Masks - GET A GRIP.

Ok.

So. Lots of whinging about masks at the moment as BoJo finally hauls his arse into gear and says that you have to wear them in the shops and on public transport.

In Catalunya where I live masks are obligatory. Every time you are in public. Including in the street. Inside and out. The exceptions are

Medical conditions (you need a paper justifying this)
When playing sport
Children under the age of 6
If eating or drinking

If you don't comply - 100 euro fine. No arguments.

Most people here were already wearing masks anyway (because we saw the horror at the beginning of the pandemic here and we know what a real lockdown is like - not allowed out at all, children locked inside for nearly 3 months, etc)

People arent whining and complaining nor imagining how they can invent aome excuse to mean that the rules don't apply to them and the overwhelming majority of people are wearing them all the time.

Tourists not so much but they getting fined. Good.

So England. PLEASE. Stop with the selfishness. Literally dozens of countries have mandatory mask wearing and citizens comply because they care about each other and don't spend their time acting entitled and "I'm all right Jack"

There are articles in the European press about this. Literally "English people are selfish - is it any wonder they are so resistant to wear masks". It's embarrassing. As a nation, as a society, it's time to grow up and just put the mask on like everyone else.

English people. You aren't special. You are starting to look like the kid who gets thw whole class detention because they just keep on breaking the rules.

Wear the mask. Please. It's for the safety of everyone.

And if you ABSOLUTELY MUST come to Spain on holiday, even more so.

Pleasenodont · 14/07/2020 15:21

Totally agree but also think they should have been compulsory from the beginning. The government have fucked up so much.

strawberrypip · 14/07/2020 15:21

yeah I also think locking your kids up for months was a real bad move but not gonna write a massive thread about it because I DO NOT CARE what other countries are doing

ChavvySexPond · 14/07/2020 15:21

You won't hear me whinging about wearing a mask.

I will do all I can for my family, my community, my country, the economy, jobs. And I'll do it cheerfully. I'm just glad our government seems to be finally getting a grip and realising that the economic and social chaos continues until we get the virus under control.

I don't have a very high opinion of people who aren't prepared to pull together on this.

You'll notice however, that I don't name call or tell people to stay indoors indefinitely if they don't like it. Because that's not a) kind, or b) practicable for literally anybody.

SinkGirl · 14/07/2020 15:21

I’m completely with you. And the worst part for me is that all those who are taking the piss are just making it more likely that those with relevant disabilities will experience abuse from the general public, yet again.

I’m glad my twins are only 3, because they are both autistic and can not understand what a mask is for, or why they need to wear one and they would not and could not wear one. It would be impossible. I can’t even get one to wear glasses and they help him to see better.

And yes, they find out distressing if we wear masks - it has made for a couple of tricky hospital appointments where everyone was wearing them (including an aborted EEG attempt because he was so distressed). But I’m not having a tantrum and refusing to wear one because it’s necessary that everyone who can wear one does so.

This entire experience has made me quite embarrassed to be English (not British, since other parts of the U.K. have managed to get their shit together far better without this whining)

HowFastIsTooFast · 14/07/2020 15:22

@timeforawine

I've got mine :-) disposables for airport/plane when we go on holiday then reusable for while there and now here for shopping, even getting my 4 year old wearing one. My only complaint is a wear glasses and they can steam up, though i found a youtube video showing you how to fold a tissue up and set it in the nose bridge which has helped a lot! No complaints here OP, if that's whats needed so be it
Same here. We're going to Majorca next week and have a pack of 50 disposable masks between the 2 of us, and will also take the fabric ones we use at home.

They are currently the rules in Spain so I will abide by them while there, just like I would dress demurely in the middle east or take my shoes off to enter a temple in Asia. I don't see any difference.

There are massive over-reactions all over my local facebook pages and frankly it makes me ashamed to be English. You'd think we were all being shipped off to Guantanamo Bay. Wearing a small light mask to protect other humans while you pop into Sports Direct or Tesco is not a breach of your human rights FFS. First world problems the likes of which we've never seen before.

SockYarn · 14/07/2020 15:22

Actually, OP, I am fluent in Spanish and regularly read El Pais, El Mundo and watch the news on TVE. During the state of alarm, Spanish people were not allowed to leave their houses.

Horrendous.

Timeforanotherusername · 14/07/2020 15:23

Changed you should perhaps look at different press as well.

The UK in general has followed lockdown. We have done so far more so than expected.

Yes there are idiots who think rules don't apply to them. And that is what you are most likely seeing. But on the whole peopme have been sensible.

We managed to get it under control with the lockdown we had. Things are not really that bad now. It is not widespread in the community as it once was. Yes there are problem areas but hopefully these will be managed by localised lockdowns.

As others have said. Mumsnet is not representative. I'm not actually English, but i do live here and I can say that it's not really like what you would see in the daily mail / express etc.

The UK is known worldwide for its gutter press.

Most everyday people are going about their business trying to protect their family. We have a poor government yes. But people have in the whole done what is needed for their families.

NOS4A2 · 14/07/2020 15:23
@SockYarn

Read different newspapers. Yes it was rough but we understood why it was needed. We didn't "roll over and comply".... We agreed, for the most part.

We acted like adults and worked as a community. We thought as a group not as individuals.

And we watched in horror as tthe British and US and Brazilian governments failed to protect their citizens at all, and convinced them that it was in the name of" freedom"
Spain 608 per Million deaths
UK 660 per Million deaths

Do tell us how you have done so fantastically well compared to us?

ChavvySexPond · 14/07/2020 15:23

Look at the countries with the lowest deaths. They wear masks and implemented a test and trace system that works. Most of them never needed a lockdown because of this. If you understand exponential curves you'll know that we had no choice.

SockYarn · 14/07/2020 15:23

a pack of 50 disposable masks

Yay! Landfill! Single Use Plastics!!

Hmm

Doggodogington · 14/07/2020 15:23

YANBU op, I never realised how bloody precious people actually were. Just wear a fucking mask ffs!
Everyone is bloody swooning and fainting at the thought of it! Maybe carry a fan so when you do come over all queer, you can pretend you’re an extra from a period drama.

HesterShaw1 · 14/07/2020 15:25

@SockYarn

Hmm

Quite. Whatever happened to the war on single use plastic?

This time last year people were falling over themselves to berate straw users.

DibDibDibduh · 14/07/2020 15:26

@cologne4711

I'm English and I haven't heard anyone moaning , or are you just looking for an argument

Are you being ironic? MN has been full of nothing but speshul people moaning.

However, I very much doubt that the foreign press has picked up on MN and suspect the OP is making that bit up.

And why do you think England or the UK needed to cope Spain's over the top lockdown? Stopping people going out for exercise or making them use one supermarket only would have had zero effect on the number of cases or deaths.

However, I generally agree with the OP that people need to grow up about this - and fast. But as I mentioned on another thread it looks like people have already taken the advice on board and are already wearing masks in shops.

Again......... I have said I am talking about in RL not the batty world of MN 🙄
HesterShaw1 · 14/07/2020 15:27

In fact, this is nothing but the new "Stay the fuck home" isn't it?

frumpety · 14/07/2020 15:27

@Changednamesorry can I ask if you have a to wear an actual face mask or if any face covering will do , like a running snood thing or similar ?

ShebaShimmyShake · 14/07/2020 15:27

We're a nation of total pillocks, OP. Surely we've been making that abundantly clear for years now.

MargotB7 · 14/07/2020 15:27

How long are people shopping for? You won't have the mask on for long. Obviously people who love a day out shopping are going to have to wear them longer but I'll be nipping to a supermarket. An hour tops.

CatandtheFiddle · 14/07/2020 15:29

Totally agree, OP.

HowFastIsTooFast · 14/07/2020 15:29

@SockYarn

Hmm

@SockYarn if I were able to boil wash them on holiday like I can at home then we'd only use our fabric ones of course.

We're taking disposables (the minimum amount I could get hold of) so we have some so we can alternate if needs be, and the excess will be given to someone/some organisation in need when we get home. Sometimes, needs must.

I've used a disposable glove at any point during the pandemic because I can wash my hands in hot water and sanitize them as often as required without adding to landfill.

Doggodogington · 14/07/2020 15:30

I feel like we need a Morgan Freeman video telling people to “wear a fucking mask”.

Of course it is. And if you don't have a mask that the Covid-Police deem acceptable to their (made-up) roolz, then you're personally responsible for murdering their granny.

Again, a poster who takes delight in flagellating the nation. When what they actually mean is "people who don't agree with me".
Soubriquet · 14/07/2020 15:31

I dont want to wear a mask.

But I will because it’s what the law says
