Masks - GET A GRIP.

Ok.

So. Lots of whinging about masks at the moment as BoJo finally hauls his arse into gear and says that you have to wear them in the shops and on public transport.

In Catalunya where I live masks are obligatory. Every time you are in public. Including in the street. Inside and out. The exceptions are

Medical conditions (you need a paper justifying this)
When playing sport
Children under the age of 6
If eating or drinking

If you don't comply - 100 euro fine. No arguments.

Most people here were already wearing masks anyway (because we saw the horror at the beginning of the pandemic here and we know what a real lockdown is like - not allowed out at all, children locked inside for nearly 3 months, etc)

People arent whining and complaining nor imagining how they can invent aome excuse to mean that the rules don't apply to them and the overwhelming majority of people are wearing them all the time.

Tourists not so much but they getting fined. Good.

So England. PLEASE. Stop with the selfishness. Literally dozens of countries have mandatory mask wearing and citizens comply because they care about each other and don't spend their time acting entitled and "I'm all right Jack"

There are articles in the European press about this. Literally "English people are selfish - is it any wonder they are so resistant to wear masks". It's embarrassing. As a nation, as a society, it's time to grow up and just put the mask on like everyone else.

English people. You aren't special. You are starting to look like the kid who gets thw whole class detention because they just keep on breaking the rules.

Wear the mask. Please. It's for the safety of everyone.

And if you ABSOLUTELY MUST come to Spain on holiday, even more so.

It's not just about the bloody masks, Sakura. It's people being shouted down on MN when they express any opinion that distinguishes them from Pollyanna. We can't just wear masks, no, we have to love it too or be accused of being selfish murders.

Changednamesorry · 14/07/2020 15:06

@ssd

I absolutely agree and am stunned
A) that kids were still in school and teachers weren't provided with PPE
B) That they plan to have no masks in schools.

Its insane.

Is this ANOTHER thread having the mask vs not mask debate or is this one specific about people moaning about it? OP is unclear. Is it “get a grip and wear a mask” or “get a grip and stop moaning about it”?

If the former, bit too early to comment. Not sure there is much evidence to suggest British people are refusing to compile.

If the latter, NEVER. I’ll wear a mask but I like to moan thank you.

MargotB7 · 14/07/2020 15:07

I agree op . What a fuss people are making. They don’t reduce your oxygen levels, they don’t cause any harm and there is evidence about them reducing transmission. I wish folk would just get on with.

Another who agrees. I can't believe some of the people moaning about them.

IntoTheUnknown27 · 14/07/2020 15:07

You aren't being unreasonable. I'm putting my hand up as an English person in the room (please don't throw rocks at me).

I'm 31 and I have congenital heart and lung problems. I very often feel as if I'm being smothered but I had to go out to a hospital appointment the other day and I wore my mask all day. I wanted to take it off yes, I felt like I was going to pass out.

I'm actually excluded from wearing them but I wear one. I wear one to protect myself and my fellow country folk because I actually care.

I haven't had Corona but I have had bird flu, in 2018. I tell you what, I wouldn't want anyone to suffer like that. I was in the ITU for weeks. The physical and emotional scars you're left with sometimes. Horrendous. Yeah, you might get Corona and you might be grand but you might not. Your friend and their child might not.

WEAR THE MASK.

BarbedBloom · 14/07/2020 15:07

I also totally agree. I totally get that some people can't wear them for a variety of reasons but some people are just being ridiculous about it now. In Korea, when I lived there, children from kindergarten age wore masks without a single complaint due to the air quality and it was more unusual to see people out without them.

People want to go back to normal, which I understand, this is a way of doing that. As someone shielding on the few occasions where I have had to go out, I have worn a mask. I have to get taxis due to mobility problems and the taxi driver was really grateful, he says people have just got into the cab coughing everywhere. He has to work to pay his bills and has a vulnerable family member who he worries about. People here are also awful at social distancing whether masks are worn or not, so at least it is something.

diplodocusinermine · 14/07/2020 15:08

Agree OP. This bloody country is going down the tubes. Too many people shrieking about rights with no thought to responsibilities. Anyone would think we're being forced to wear a full on gimp mask 24/7 rather than a small face covering for the time we're in a shop or on public transport. The evidence for masks reducing transmission is growing every week.

timeforawine · 14/07/2020 15:08

I've got mine :-) disposables for airport/plane when we go on holiday then reusable for while there and now here for shopping, even getting my 4 year old wearing one.
My only complaint is a wear glasses and they can steam up, though i found a youtube video showing you how to fold a tissue up and set it in the nose bridge which has helped a lot!
No complaints here OP, if that's whats needed so be it

DotForShort · 14/07/2020 15:08

I agree with you completely, Changedname. For most people, wearing a mask is annoying and inconvenient, but it is a small price to pay to help keep others safe. No one's human rights are being threatened, as the more extreme anti-maskers like to believe. It is one small thing that can be effective in stopping the transmission of this deadly virus. Why on earth would anyone object to that?

If people want to whine and complain about it, they're welcome to AFAIC. After all, moaning is the British national sport. Wink But everyone who is required to wear a mask should comply with the rules. Full stop.

JacobReesMogadishu · 14/07/2020 15:08

Totally agree. I don’t see why someone’s anxiety trumps others lives.

Cadfaelfan · 14/07/2020 15:09

This is going to be stay the fuck at home all over again, isn't it?

My problem is less with the masks, and more with all the people apparently slathering with their eagerness to berate others over their attitiudes to mask wearing, to be quite frank.

MargotB7 · 14/07/2020 15:09

I’ll wear a mask but I like to moan thank you.

I don't actually mind people moaning as long as I don't have to listen.

Yorkshiredolls · 14/07/2020 15:09

YANBU. I’m english, we’re a joke.

Usecoooomonsnse · 14/07/2020 15:10

Absolutely required everywhere including schools in Sept. Anything to stop the spread 👍

SockYarn · 14/07/2020 15:10

What Spain has done to people is horrendous. And they've blindly rolled over and accepted being banned from leaving the house for weeks, and now the mask thing?

Yuk. And to think Cataluna thinks of itself as liberal and progressive.

Changednamesorry · 14/07/2020 15:11

@Botherfreedays
Yes. I think it is entitled. That's exactly it.

And of course staying home instead of wearing a mask is a perfectly reasonable alternative.

I need to go out because we live in an inner city flat with no outside space. We are reliant (as is the rest of our neighborhood living in similar setup) on everyone being responsible for each other.

So when people arw all "mind your own business."......We are. Other people not wearing a mask is our business because they are creating a risk.

Your reaction is completely over the top. Take a deep breath and relax a small bit.

People are being asked to wear masks to protect people's health and lives. It's more than reasonable in these very serious circumstances, which is why everyone is disagreeing with you.

quodvox · 14/07/2020 15:11

I've just ordered this sexy little number for myself.
Should do the job nicely

Regularsizedrudy · 14/07/2020 15:12

YES! THANK YOU.

Babs709 · 14/07/2020 15:12

I’ll wear a mask but I like to moan thank you.

Well quite. Anyone reading articles about the English’s reluctance to wear masks is probably going to get annoyed reading about the English’s reluctance to wear masks. I feel perhaps if it wound OP up she could perhaps not read the articles. Similarly to anyone on the many MN threads about masks... don’t like hearing people moan? Click on one of the hundreds of other threads. Done.

(But if the “get a grip” refers to English people refusing to wear them as opposed to just moaning about wearing them then this a premature thread.)

Regularsizedrudy · 14/07/2020 15:12

Sick of hearing all the shitty excuses. Put a fucking mask on and get over it.

ChavvySexPond · 14/07/2020 15:13

Presumably we all want Covid to be over/ under control in our country to save lives, save the economy and so we can get back to some kind of normal life?

So logically we would do all we can to contribute to that effort.

Wouldn't we?

AllPlayedOut · 14/07/2020 15:13

My problem is less with the masks, and more with all the people apparently slathering with their eagerness to berate others over their attitiudes to mask wearing, to be quite frank.

This. The same twats moaning about people complaining about masks seem to spend far more time moaning on MN than the people who aren't entirely comfortable with mask wearing.

DamitJanet · 14/07/2020 15:13

Agree to an extent OP. Although would say that mumsnet makes it look like a bigger issue than it is, in really life most people I come across are either for it, or happy to go along with it all quietly.

ReggieCat · 14/07/2020 15:13

Is having a phobia of wearing a mask a pre-requisite for joining MN?

Does anyone on MN have a child who isn't on the autism spectrum or doesn't have sensory issues?

The attitude of so many posters is absolutely pathetic and they seem to spend their lives looking for reasons they shouldn't comply with guidelines put in place to help us ALL stay healthy/alive.

What would they have been like when wearing seatbelts became compulsory?
