Sick of being called Karen

Listening to Radio 4 and Caroline Hirons is on and she has already used the term Karen to refer to her followers. I'm just sick of it. It's as bad as calling a woman the B word or C word!

Why would she do it? Why do women do it to other women?

OP posts:

@AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter

but why can't a women ask for better service/refund without being called any name

Because she's a middle aged woman silly! Middle aged women are meant to sit down and shut the fck up apparently! Its fine for young attractive women to complain about crap service and its fine for men of all ages (and all appearances) to complain about crap service but a middle aged woman? and everyone loses their shit. Its pathetic, misogynistic, bollocks.

Spot on.
GimmeAy · 11/07/2020 18:39

It's a joke?

Renaggie · 11/07/2020 18:53

If your idea of a joke is an insidiously misogynistic meme, then yeah, probably...
Reducing people to stereotypes tends not to to date well though.

InFiveMins · 11/07/2020 18:55

People are way too sensitive.

I am a woman and don't take offence to the 'Karen' meme. I've never been called a 'Karen' either.

It's funny and a joke.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 11/07/2020 18:59

@LinemanForTheCounty

Every time you use the name as an insult, an incel has a vengeful tearful wank.
You’re my favourite
MouthBreathingRage · 11/07/2020 19:03

I've never been called a 'Karen' either.

You have absolutely no idea if you have or not and chances are if you make a complaint about something then you will be called one.

It's funny and a joke.

How is it funny? What's the punchline some of us on here are evidently not getting?

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 11/07/2020 19:07

But the thing about jokes that target one specific cohort of people as fair game based on features such as their sex, race, religion, sexuality, nationality etc. is that they generally don’t have the greatest longevity. You know how people laughed at racist jokes in the 70’s because “it was just a joke” or homophobic jokes in the 80’s because it was “just a joke” but now we’re disgusted by those “jokes”? Well, just like that!

If thats the level of your humour then I pity you.

Me too. How sad.

FelicisNox · 12/07/2020 17:55

I've never understood the whole concept and wholeheartedly dislike it.

Unfollow the b*tch, problem solved.

syskywalker · 12/07/2020 17:58

Simples. Vote with your feet, or in this case ears. Don’t listen to her again find a nice supportive podcast. Millions of them out there.

MadamShazam · 12/07/2020 18:04

YANBU OP. I detest the way Karen is used to belittle middle aged women ( like myself) for having the audacity to speak up and challenge something they are unhappy with. Why is there not an equivalent for men? Why does it have to be a thing at all??

ginandbearit · 12/07/2020 18:17

Its been said a number of times on this and the other threads about the Karen meme ..it's not about all middle aged women being disparaged for existing /complaining / daring to have an opinion..it's about a certain type of entitled woman ..nasty often racist and certainly rude to waiters and shop assistants and others perceived as lowly and powerless ...there's plenty of ways to complain about poor service without being vile .
I often wonder at the type of people who belittle waiters and food servers...how stupid are you to be rude to the people who prepare your food .. how much spit and phlegm have you swallowed over the years?
Oh and in the States 'Darren' has become the male equivalent...here it's still 'wanker '

Helmetbymidnight · 12/07/2020 18:23

it's not about all middle aged women being disparaged for existing /complaining / daring to have an opinion

but it is.

and if we're talking about who talks down to serving staff or shop workers are we now pretending that women do it so much more than men? when i was a waitress, 9/10 the people who were arsey with me were men.

still middle-aged women eh, urgh, theyre the worst.

KarenMcKaren · 12/07/2020 18:30

opinion..it's about a certain type of entitled woman ..nasty often racist and certainly rude to waiters and shop assistants and others perceived as lowly and powerless ...there's plenty of ways to complain about poor service without being vile

It's not though. It's now aimed at any middle aged woman who doesn't fall in with the groupthink.

Mittens030869 · 12/07/2020 18:37

But no one is disputing that these women referred to are behaving badly. If they are they absolutely should be called out for that. But why give them the name Karen? Just challenge them when they behave badly.

Supposedly, there are male equivalents, as in Chad or Darren. But we don't see numerous posts talking about 'Chad' or 'Darren', do we? This has become a way to silence middle aged women, even if it wasn't the original intention.

And do you really not get it that for a woman who is actually called Karen it's become irritating?

Choccylips · 12/07/2020 18:43

I have a friend that got called this when she commented on a social site video. When I looked at the profiles of the people that had called her Karen. I realised that these people were in a large majority, ignorant, little under achievers that would never amount to anything, and would never stand up for anything to make a difference to society, so had to take their frustration out on someone that wasn't covered by a hate crime law. This women should be ashamed I wouldn't give her airtime if I was you.

Coopee · 12/07/2020 18:50

@SinisterBumFacedCat

I think is very telling that we have a name to shut down any woman over 30 but not a similar one for men.
Quite. What about Gary? He’s being a total Gary? 🤭
PablosHoney · 12/07/2020 18:59

I think since it’s being used incorrectly to just shut women down it shouldn’t be used at all, it can get in the bin along with snowflake.

Carriecakes80 · 12/07/2020 19:01

Blimey some of you lot sound like a right Julie!

;-)

PablosHoney · 12/07/2020 19:02

I’m a grizelda thank you!

Mama4412 · 12/07/2020 19:25

I wouldn't get so cut up over it. Only people who act like Karen's get offended by being called Karen lol call me a bitch but it doesn't bother me because I know I'm not one. The people I feel sorry for is the women who are actually called Karen lol

Camassia · 12/07/2020 19:30

Never heard of this before reading this thread.

I can only feel huge relief that the name chosen to portray this type of ridicule wasn't Sharon in this instance. We Sharons have had to put up with our name being taken in vain for much longer than the Karens of this world.

Sympathy for Karens, but so glad that Sharons have been left alone on this occasion!!

Tiredoftalking · 12/07/2020 20:09

Maybe it’s just me but I would rather be called a bitch or a cow or even gasp a cunt than a Karen. What does it even mean?? That if I complain about something reasonable I’m a Karen?? I’d rather be a C U Next Tuesday as an individual than a generic Mia you Karen. Ridiculous stereotype!

murakamilove · 12/07/2020 20:37

Who is Karen though????
