The number of unintentional shootings by children increased by more than 30% between March and May.

This always shocks me. What sort of person leaves a loaded gun lying around where a child can get it? Or has a loaded gun in her purse where her two-year-old goes rummaging for candy, so that the unfortunate child shoots her through the head without even knowing what a gun is?

Masks in the US

Will Trump accept to go regardless? Hmm

So scary for the mask wearing Shock
just flippin' wear one!
And please do not make it into a political statement.

We have two friends, a couple who live in Naples, Florida, and they are beside themselves with what's going on there. Both of them,, a couple of guys in 60s/early 70s and Dems through and through, are so worried as to what's happening. They feel that mask wearing has been turned so political and are literally not going out anywhere until things level off.

I think we're going this way too. There's a March in London against wearing masks Hmm

DH says no, I say yes. I think he'll say "You didn't fire me, I QUIT! You don't deserve me!!" and stomp out leaving a literal mess behind, like an evicted tenant. I do think he'll refuse to concede, although that's just a formality. DH thinks he'll refuse to leave, saying that the election results are invalid. But it's 2 1/2 months from the election to Inauguration Day so any legal challenge will have been heard by SCOTUS well before then.

Both of us think that he'll do his utmost to rig the election by any means possible. That's what's really scary.

lionheart · 18/07/2020 02:20

It astounds me too Asking. Just the statistics on accidental shootings are enough.

Dr Birx and data collection:

edition.cnn.com/2020/07/17/politics/birx-coronavirus-task-force-political-skills-reputation/index.html

'Washington (CNN)As the relationship between Dr. Anthony Fauci and President Donald Trump publicly disintegrated over the past few months, Dr. Deborah Birx, Fauci's former mentee, solidified her standing inside the White House, to the point that sources familiar with the situation say she has essentially taken charge of running the task force day to day.

Birx spearheaded the administration's recent decision to have hospitals send information on coronavirus patients to a new federal database, a source involved with the process told CNN, bypassing the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an agency Birx has often complained about to colleagues. She has also been a forceful advocate for the President's push to reopen schools, forming a working group to create new guidance after the President criticized the CDC's initial recommendations, calling them "too tough" and "expensive."'

I guess the full Fox/Chris Wallace interview will be broadcast on Sunday but satisfying clip of Trump getting called out for lying misinformation is available here.

In the scheme of things not that important but, yet again, speaks volumes about his flawed character.
(TBH I'm surprised he didn't move them on Day 1)

White House portraits of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush moved from prominent space to rarely used room.
www.cnn.com/2020/07/17/politics/white-house-portraits-clinton-bush-trump/index.html

... That places the paintings well outside of Trump's vantage point in the White House. In their previous location, the pictures would have been seen daily as Trump descends the staircase from his third floor private residence or when he hosts events on the state floor of the White House. Now, they hang in a space used mainly for storing unused tablecloths and furniture.

... The portrait of former President Barack Obama is not expected to be unveiled for a formal ceremony during Trump's first term, a sign of the bitter relationship between the 44th and 45th presidents.

Meanwhile Barr and co. are being challenged over murky Portland "law" enforcement.

Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum just filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security regarding federal agents arresting Portlanders.

Trump won't rig the election himself, but he'll allow his friend Putin to do it for him, as he did in 2016.

RIP Rep John Lewis

And I hope Supreme Court Judge RBG is doing better.

lionheart · 18/07/2020 12:52

What a shame to lose a figure like Rep. John Lewis. Sad

lionheart · 18/07/2020 12:54

From a year ago:

John Lewis
@repjohnlewis

'Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Do not become bitter or hostile. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble. We will find a way to make a way out of no way.'

Roussette · 18/07/2020 13:04

And how petty and pathetic that Trumpy can tweet nonsense about Biden, but as yet has not acknowledged John Lewis.

I watched the film Selma only about 3 years ago, and being in awe that he marched alongside MLK then.

And now he's gone Sad

The loss of John Lewis has brought me to tears. The last of the 'Big 6' Civil Rights leaders of the '60s and a voice for peaceful change. He was also a powerful voice for labor unions including the AFGE, my former union.

What is truly frightening is the GOP candidate he was running against, Angela Stanton-King. A convicted criminal, pardoned by Scrotus who is running on a 'God and Scrotus' platform. She's anti-Gay, anti-choice, and pro-Trump . Since Rep Lewis was such a long-serving Rep there really isn't an outstanding and well known Dem candidate to replace him on the November ballot. And it's a very short period to get someone 'out there' in the public eye.

lionheart · 18/07/2020 14:51

That looks bleak Across but you never know.
