Surprising no one, Kremlin welcomes Trump’s decision to withdraw US troops from Europe:
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told CNN following "the less American solders there are on the European continent the calmer it is in Europe."

What is the difference between mail-in voting and absentee voting?

The Washington Post won't allow me to link to it, but they had this to say:

Absentee Ballots are a great way to vote for the many senior citizens, military, and others who can’t get to the polls on Election Day. These ballots are very different from 100% Mail-In Voting, which is “RIPE for FRAUD,” and shouldn’t be allowed!

— President Trump, on Twitter

You may be wondering: What is the difference, exactly, between absentee ballots (a great way to vote) and mail-in voting (shouldn’t be allowed)? Wonder no longer!

An absentee ballot is sent in the mail, whereas a mail-in vote is mailed in. Sending ballots in the mail is famously secure, but mailing in votes is ripe for all kinds of fraud and confusion.

An absentee ballot is filled out in pen or pencil, whereas a mail-in vote is filled in with ink or graphite. Already you see how different the two are, and how much riper for fraud one is.

An absentee ballot is placed in an envelope, whereas a mail-in vote is enclosed in an envelope. The difference in security should be obvious.

An absentee ballot must be signed, whereas a mail-in vote requires a signature. An envelope containing an absentee ballot must be closed securely, while an envelope containing a mail-in vote must be sealed. On an absentee ballot, a voter marks their preferred candidates, but on a mail-in vote, a voter fills in the ballot to indicate the candidates of their choice.

An absentee ballot is cast by a Republican, whereas a mail-in vote is sent by a Democrat.

It is my opinion that nothing Trump writes on Twitter should be reported except to call it out as a lie when it is one.

Excellent summary!

or this much less amusing explanation
www.factcheck.org/2020/06/trumps-absentee-vs-mail-in-ballot-spin/
“President Trump’s comments regarding absentee and mail-in ballots are misleading,” Darren Hutchinson, a law professor at the University of Florida and an elections expert, told us via email. “The differences between the two systems are trivial. To vote by absentee ballot, a voter must provide a reason, usually travel or disability, to excuse in-person voting. The absentee ballot label, however, is somewhat of a relic. Most states, including Florida, have moved to ‘no-excuse’ mail-in ballots. In these states, individuals can submit a mail-in ballot without explaining their absence on election day. They simply need to submit an application virtually identical to the one states use for absentee ballots.

“There is no rigid screening process that distinguishes the two methods of voting,” Hutchinson added. “Once registration and address are verified, the elections office will process the request and send the ballot. In Florida, almost 30% of votes in the last presidential election were cast by mail, and voters did not have to provide an excuse, be absent from the state, or go through an enhanced screening process. On this issue, Trump is simply wrong.”

I have an overwhelming desire to reply to each of his daft tweets with "You Tosser!" but I'm not sure he would understand what a tosser is...
AcrossthePond55 · 30/07/2020 15:05

Excellent explanation from factcheck.org, Bruce

I've been a 'permanent mail in voter' here in CA for at least 20 years now. There are probably over a million nationwide. Funny but never before has anyone ever said how ripe for fraud we are!

HoldMyLobster · 30/07/2020 16:40

I voted using a mail-in ballot recently. I accidentally requested the ballot twice. The second application was denied because I'd already applied a first time.

HoldMyLobster · 30/07/2020 16:40

So just to clarify, Herman Cain has died of a virus that is no threat to anyone and that we should not be taking seriously?

Roussette · 30/07/2020 16:45

I replied to one of his tweets calling him a cockwomble the other day Blush
And lots of Americans said they were going to use it when talking about him from now on Grin

PerkingFaintly · 30/07/2020 16:47

Oh good lord, I hadn't seen that about Cain.

Possibly popularity is based on a real doctor trying to save lives compared to someone else who may not be particularly useful?

ludothedog · 30/07/2020 19:03

Obama speaking at John Lewis' funeral - he is such a great orator, a great statesman. He inspires, brings tears to your eyes and uplifts his audience. I miss him. He is truly a great leader. We need more like him.

lionheart · 30/07/2020 19:12

Trump has announced a previously unscehduled press conference.

He really does not like the attention to be elsewhere.

Obama taking no prisoners. Passion and anger I think.

Trumpy on a 'round table' with Birx and Fauci and talking about rolling out the vaccine.
Saying the army will do it.
What vaccine?
He is honestly talking like there is one.

And he is the only one not wearing a mask

Mind you a few weeks ago Trump was extolling the virtues of 'his' great scientists "who created the vaccine against AIDS" ... Which doesn't exist.

I've just tuned in to him wittering on reading from notes that he obviously didn't bother looking at in advance.
Reminds me of a 12 year old me stumbling through my music lesson sightreading a piano piece that I was meant to have spent the last week practicing
