Should they be cancelled or is it going too far? They weren't like Little Britain, imho. Perhaps they were offensive. How far does it go though? Will there be anything left to watch pre 2020?

Pangur2 · 10/06/2020 21:47

@themurk I bloody hope Mrs Brown’s Boys is cancelled, but because it is shite and an embarrassment to my country. 😉

BobbieDraper · 10/06/2020 21:48

@IDefinitelyHaveFriends

I think I could safely guarantee that many people on the Confederate side would glorify the old south. They fought a war in order to keep slavery because they thought it was great. People really did think that. That is racist in the extreme, but people were.

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 10/06/2020 21:49

Could it just be that their time ran out on Netflix? That happened with plebs a while back.

user1972548274 · 10/06/2020 21:49

Isn’t it important to educate people about the past to make a better future?

Normalising abhorrent things is not the same as educating people about them.

TheMurk · 10/06/2020 21:50

I’m not going to disagree with you there @Pangur2

TheMurk · 10/06/2020 21:52

@BobbieDraper are you seriously saying that inequalities in education and the never ending cycle of poverty aren’t oppression regardless of your race But it’s okay to laugh at Vicky Pollard because she is white?

BobbieDraper · 10/06/2020 21:53

@TheMurk

You're one of those "all lives matter" people, arent you?

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 10/06/2020 21:57

Personally I think it would be more useful to have a discussion about these issues rather than an outrght ban

They haven't been banned, they've been dropped from Netflix ?

TheMurk · 10/06/2020 21:59

@BobbieDraper no mate I’m one of those biracial people who loves the mighty boosh and found league of gentlemen hilarious.

But you chose to have a go at me instead of justify what you’re saying.

Fair enough to have a drama about the American Civil War in which some Southerners try to justify slavery: that would be historically accurate. The problem is that every single event we’re shown in GWTW is designed to show that they’re right to say that, in gross disregard of the historical facts. And it doesn’t even have the excuse of being contemporaneous.

ITonyah · 10/06/2020 22:01

Is Papa Lazarou blackface? I thought he was just scary carnival type make up

derxa · 10/06/2020 22:02

Gone With The Wind includes the black actress Hattie McDaniel as “Mammy”. The first ever black woman to win an Oscar. It was for that performance and now it’s banned. Gone Too Far! Poor Hatty

TheMurk · 10/06/2020 22:03

@Khadernawazkhan what Bobbie is essentially saying is only Desiree Devere’s life matters. Vicky Pollard doesn’t.

1forsorrow · 10/06/2020 22:04

Gone With the Wind isn't great history is it, I mean not many slaves were happy and devoted to their masters. I wouldn't want my GS (currently studying slavery in history) thinking life as a slave was all lovely.

There's also the one female slave, Prissy?, who is portrayed as so stupid and child like that it seems the slave owners are so kind to look after her.

I think it is a brilliant story but history? Not really, it's a fantasy world.

BobbieDraper · 10/06/2020 22:04

@TheMurk
There was nothing to justify. I never said it was ok to mock "the vikki pollard". Show me where I said that?

I said that it isnt seen the same way because of the power imbalance at play when white people black up and mock black people for stereotypical black characteristics. I also said they arent the same thing. It's wrong, but they arent the same.

You then twisted that into me saying it was ok, and that women and poverty striken havent been oppressed. I didnt say that or imply it.

bellie710 · 10/06/2020 22:04

So White Chicks where 2 black men dress up as White Women is still on Netflix but, Matt Lucas dressed as a Black Woman in Come Fly with me has been banned? Why is it racist for white men to dress as black women but not black men to dress as white women?

category12 · 10/06/2020 22:05

What's wrong with agreeing that All Lives Matter

Oh fgs

1forsorrow · 10/06/2020 22:06

I bloody hope Mrs Brown’s Boys is cancelled, but because it is shite and an embarrassment to my country I hope so too.

LlamaHammock · 10/06/2020 22:08

I absolutely understand and agree with the removal if Little Britain.

I'm surprised at the Mighty Boosh though. For one, although the Spirit of Jazz's face is painted black, I didnt see it as a depiction of a black person on first viewing. If it is, he's only in a couple of minutes of one episode anyway.

BobbieDraper · 10/06/2020 22:09

@TheMurk
And again, where did I say that?

You realise that it is possible to give one group their moment, without taking away from others. It is possible to say that they are both bad, but not the same given the history behind them and the way they are portrayed.

But you run off and twist my words to suit your narrative if it makes you happy.

thesunwillout · 10/06/2020 22:09

This is just a saga now...

Notmyrealname855 · 10/06/2020 22:10

Sad aspect to Gone With The Wind...

When Hattie McDaniel won her Oscar for playing Mamie:

She and her escort were required to sit at a segregated table for two at the far wall of the room; her white agent, William Meiklejohn, sat at the same table. The hotel had a strict no-blacks policy, but allowed McDaniel in as a favor.[34][35] The discrimination continued after the award ceremony as well as her white costars went to a "no-blacks" club, where McDaniel was also denied entry. Another black woman did not win an Oscar again for 50 years, with Whoopi Goldberg winning Best Supporting Actress for her role in Ghost.

Notmyrealname855 · 10/06/2020 22:12

Also even as a kid I knew GWTW was weird and racist... I remember asking my Gran “aren’t these lot the bad guys”. It’s like a glamorous film on Gilead, except these horrors were very real. (Nb know Gilead based on some real life stuff)

Pretty little dresses on pretty little racists, never liked the film!

Still in shock about Papa Lazaru though, so I still have more to learn!
