Should they be cancelled or is it going too far? They weren't like Little Britain, imho. Perhaps they were offensive. How far does it go though? Will there be anything left to watch pre 2020?

HunterHearstHelmsley · 10/06/2020 20:45

Little Britain, as far as I'm aware, mocks the stereotype. Not the people relating to the stereotype.

Spirit of Jazz... I can only assume people haven't watched the show.

Can't comment on League of Gentleman as I've never actually seen it myself.

mammalazarou · 10/06/2020 20:48

League of gentlemen is still on BritBox.

Destinysdaughter · 10/06/2020 20:49

They will ban Friends next as it has elements of homophobia and transphobic in it...Personally I think it would be more useful to have a discussion about these issues rather than an outrght ban. There is also going to be a massive backlash to this ( you can already see it on social media) which will be totally counterproductive.

Educate, discuss, inform, don't ban!

Nettleweed · 10/06/2020 20:50

Both programmes (Mighty Boosh and League of Gentlemen) are still available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

MaleficentsCrow · 10/06/2020 20:54

Gone with the wind...has gone?

I understand it depicts house slaves, slavery but it did happen, we can't erase it. It was a film of its time.

Many productions in that era are literally films of their time, with all white casts and black actors/actresses cast as slaves, maids and so on.

What next, Zulu?

My0My · 10/06/2020 20:55

Gone With The Wind includes the black actress Hattie McDaniel as “Mammy”. The first ever black woman to win an Oscar. It was for that performance and now it’s banned. Gone Too Far!

fluffy71 · 10/06/2020 21:02

What’s next? Burning of books?

FrippEnos · 10/06/2020 21:03

Mighty Boosh is probably down to howling jimmy jefferson

Cookieedough · 10/06/2020 21:04

I've seen people saying that The Mighty Boosh has had complaints due to an episode where Noel & Julian have darkened their skin to play two characters. Episode is called The Priest & The Beast. So I am assuming that that's why it has now been taken off Netflix?

JemimaShore · 10/06/2020 21:07

Nooooooo.

DH told me Gone With The Wind was gone from IPlayer too today. Because it depicts slaves as happy? I mean I don't agree with black face and stuff - but a historical film on the American Civil War - I think that's going too far.

I look forward to them taken all the drag shows off the BBC too - for their offensive woman-face. Oh sorry, that won't happen will it.

category12 · 10/06/2020 21:07

Gone with the Wind is removed until they add a content advisory to it.

FlamingoAndJohn · 10/06/2020 21:08

The problem with Gone With the Wind is that that slaves are shown as being happy.

With Boosh it’s the Spirit of Jazz ie black face
With League of Gentleman it’s Papa Lazaru (sp?).

RelapsedChocoholic · 10/06/2020 21:09

Gone with the wind has temporarily been removed from HBO, to be reinstated alongside a discussion piece.

The issue is, as I understand it, the depiction of the slaves is as such that it appears black people chose to be there, that they enjoyed working for their white masters, enjoyed an equal relationship eg akin to servants rather than slaves.

The scene where mammy tightens scarlets corset and chastises her for showing her bosoms... I do not believe a slave would have been allowed to speak/act the way the character does without punishment.

underneaththeash · 10/06/2020 21:09

I tnink if you look hard enough you'll find something offensive in any comedy series.

Comedy works by looking a certain characteristics that people have and by recognising them (often in yourself) you find them funny.

NameChangeForThisOneToday · 10/06/2020 21:11

Grrrrr

The past is the past.

Henry 8th killed his wives - will we now erase all reference to him as he was a murderer?

Historical figures are Just that - HISTORICAL.

They were responding to the time. Acting as was of the time and reflective of power, place an privilege of the time.

In the future a lot of what we r doing now will be viewed as awful. Will future humans want to erase us too?

MrsNoah2020 · 10/06/2020 21:12

I saw the LOG character as satirising blackface and its sheer weirdness (I mean the weirdness of white people pretending to be black, obviously, not that being black is weird). It's saying that blackface is creepy and disturbing, and they subvert blackface by getting the character to make himself up as Caucasian too.

I don't think that necessarily a good enough reason to keep showing it if black people find it offensive, despite the satirical intent, but I do think it was very different in intent from blackface in other contexts.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/06/2020 21:13

Does anyone think this is likely to extend to books?
I volunteer at our local library (when it's open, obviously) and I've got visions of demands for this and that to be taken off the shelves

BadgersAreReal · 10/06/2020 21:13

I'm guessing the boosh was taken down because of this..

So now Netflix has removed The Mighty Boosh and League of Gentlemen
JemimaShore · 10/06/2020 21:14

Don't be silly NameChangeForThisOneToday - violence against women doesn't count!

Women are fair game. For anything. Nothing is too offensive when it comes to the depiction of women.

Likefootball · 10/06/2020 21:19

These are both BBC shows , they could reappear on Britbox.

Pangur2 · 10/06/2020 21:24

I’d imagine Little Britain etc are gone for good, or will be re-edited with the black face taken out. It wasn’t great at the time and really hasn’t aged well though, so it might be gone for good.

Papa Lazarou* and Mighty Boosh are probably just down for the moment; it is insensitive to have them up at the moment. Films with plane crashes weren’t shown after Sept 11th for a while, they changed the schedules. It’s similar. That’s totally fair enough; it’s the TV equivalent of reading the room. Gone With the Wind is down until they can edit a disclaimer to the beginning as far as I am aware, like they do with old Tom and Jerry cartoons.

*apparently PL is not meant to be blackface, he’s meant to be a scary clown. That’s what they’ve said in interviews anyway. Now I think it reeeeeally looks like blackface, but it never crossed my mind when it was on!

Doyoumind · 10/06/2020 21:25

I always thought Papa Lazarou was inspired by Morris dancers but I could be wrong. If it's seen as blackface isn't it saying blackface is fucking creepy rather than black people iyswim? I'm not defending it if people are offended. It has been shown on TV very recently.

OP posts:
Pangur2 · 10/06/2020 21:25

@BadgersAreReal oh god I’d forgotten about that! That’ll be the reason alright!

category12 · 10/06/2020 21:28

Scary clown = Pennywise, not Papa Lazarou. They were really stretching credibility there.

FlamingoAndJohn · 10/06/2020 21:28

I see PL as being a scary clown type character who is in ‘black face’ as opposed to being blacked up.
