Should they be cancelled or is it going too far? They weren't like Little Britain, imho. Perhaps they were offensive. How far does it go though? Will there be anything left to watch pre 2020?

OP posts:
Bleepbloopblarp · 10/06/2020 21:30

There will. Just not racist ones

Gone with the wind for 8nstance isn’t “racist”. It’s a representation of the civil war in America and how things were in the American south (re black slaves) at that time. So now are we erasing history?
Should we ban schindlers list or films/programmes about the war or holocaust because it’s offensive to Jewish people?
Isn’t it important to educate people about the past to make a better future?

roundtable · 10/06/2020 21:30

They haven't banned Gone with the Wind. They've taken it off while they write something to basically explain that it is a romanticized version of slavery. They did the same thing with Tom and Jerry . Then it will be available to watch again.

There are many people out there who think black people just loved being slaves. History is whitewashed. Look up the complaints about tour guides talking about slavery during a tour on the McLeod Plantation in North Carolina. There's some articles about it too. History can be very sanitised. It shouldn't be.

An article to start you off

@category12 yeah I did raise my eyebrows a bit when I heard Reece Shearsmith say that recently (I’ve been listening to old podcasts on my walks).
Seriously though, at the time, it never occurred to me that PL was offensive, just scary. (I would have been about 18 or 19 though.)

NoMoreDickheads · 10/06/2020 21:31

YANBU. I can kind of see the Little Britain thing, although it is humour. Something lefties seem to not be able to live with. They'll not be happy till they've sucked all the fun out of the world, like fun black holes.

NoMoreDickheads · 10/06/2020 21:31

I'm kind of a leftie but not like this SJW ilk.

TripleLampshade · 10/06/2020 21:32

I would not be surprised if some people start demanding books be removed. In the past I’ve seen people on MN complaining that certain books should be censored. I’ve seen complaints about Gone with the Wind, Trade Wind, The Bible and many more. People seem unable to view them in the context of when they were written.

I’ve already said this once this week, but if we’re not careful this will become the thin end of the wedge.

TheMurk · 10/06/2020 21:33

What about satire that mocks specific individuals such as politicians?

Is it okay to mock people’s looks or mannerisms as long as they are white? Is it okay to make effigies and caricatures of people because they are (white and) disliked by a portion of the population?

Essentially all but the very smartest comedy is built around mocking somebody.

Just waiting for Mrs Brown to be banned...

Bleepbloopblarp · 10/06/2020 21:33

Shouldn’t the film “white chicks” be banned if the problem is people of a certain race or colour making themselves look like someone of the opposite race/colour? Should everything Sacha baron Cohen has ever done be banned because he dresses up and acts like people of other races and ethnicities?
Where does it end?

Notmyrealname855 · 10/06/2020 21:33

Noooo I genuinely thought Papa Lazaru was a Morris dancer type person - in some areas they’d have a face like that, always thought he was a Morris dancer who’d been fired! Well I was naive!

Notmyrealname855 · 10/06/2020 21:35

Doyoumind snap! Definitely thought PL was a Morris dancer!

roundtable · 10/06/2020 21:36

Oh behave. It's not the thin edge of a wedge. Nothing has been banned. It's not illegal to watch it. It's looking at and reflecting on what the content might mean to a wider audience.

BobbieDraper · 10/06/2020 21:37

@TheMurk

White people (like politicians) are mocked for a specific characteristic or thing they do. Its legitimate satire. Black people are mocked BECAUSE THEY ARE BLACK. Given big noses, made to be fat, all speak like they're from the ghetto. Its mocking "the black person", its not mocking Dianne Abott for getting her maths wrong or Boris Johnson for looking like a total scruffy disaster.

People get more angry about mocking "the black person" than they do about mocking "the vikki polard" etc because black people have been oppressed forever. The power imbalance makes the mockery worse. It is not the same thing.

TheMurk · 10/06/2020 21:37

It’s Netflix virtue signalling you mean @roundtable

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 10/06/2020 21:38

Have any of the people who don’t see a problem with GOTW seen it recently? It’s a love letter to the Old South - it’s in the sodding title. It consistently rose-tints slavery, it glorifies the Klan, and for good measure it portrays marital rape as the solution to all a woman’s problems. In many ways a great movie, but it’s not just history.

Andante57 · 10/06/2020 21:38

Does anyone think this is likely to extend to books?
I volunteer at our local library (when it's open, obviously) and I've got visions of demands for this and that to be taken off the shelves

I think Enid Blyton is banned in many libraries.

TheMurk · 10/06/2020 21:40

@BobbieDraper you say that without a hint of irony that “the Vicky pollard” isn’t herself oppressed.

maddening · 10/06/2020 21:40

Fucking ridiculous

cdtaylornats · 10/06/2020 21:41

I assume Roots will be gone soon.

MorganKitten · 10/06/2020 21:43

The Mighty Boosh’s Spirit of Jazz is why it was removed.

Aridane · 10/06/2020 21:44

this is getting silly now wont be any programs left soon

Don’t be silly Wink

MorganKitten · 10/06/2020 21:45

Also season 1 and 2 of Boosh were taken off in April not recently. Season 3 came off today.

BobbieDraper · 10/06/2020 21:45

@TheMurk

Are you seriously saying that teen mums have suffered the same as the entire race of black people?

It is not the same.

It isnt right, but it is not the same.

MaxNormal · 10/06/2020 21:45

Gone with the Wind is pretty bad. It's a total glorification of slavery, and hardly a historical document. It was also made a long time after slavery was abolished so no excuses there.

Aridane · 10/06/2020 21:46

I think it's ridiculous. Shall we just remove every play or programme that offends?

Times move on - and some things don’t offend but are offensive in themselves - eg gollywogs

PuppyMonkey · 10/06/2020 21:46

I’m so naive, it never even entered my head that Papa Lazarou was supposed to be in black face iyswim. I genuinely thought it was just the creepiest/scariest make up ideayou could envisage for a Clown, ie black paint. Sort of the opposite of the colourful white faced clown that you usually get.Confused
