Should they be cancelled or is it going too far? They weren't like Little Britain, imho. Perhaps they were offensive. How far does it go though? Will there be anything left to watch pre 2020?

It’s got the N-word in it as well, I just remembered.

And yet a film depicting kidnap and rape as a fun sexual fantasy (365 DNI) is juts releases because who gives a shot about women's rights or insult ...... the knee jerk bandwagon virtue signalling is pathetic, not brave. Reminiscent of book burning and denying facts, because the masses allegedly want otherwise. When in fact it's juts a vocal minority.

RichPetunia · 12/06/2020 05:49

Loved the Mighty Boosh. Shall need to get it on DVD so I can dip in every now and again. It was fab and funny.

PhilCornwall1 · 12/06/2020 05:51

I completely get that some things don't age well, but I honestly think the world is becoming far too easily offended. Brits are known for their dry sense of humour and I feel as though we're having that stripped from us.

Surely Brits are now known to have an angry generation who are forever offended or "enraged" about something, or on someone's behalf.

The wheels have well and truly fallen off this country.

VoldemortsMaid · 12/06/2020 06:09

Surely the removal of something offensive to a minority race is more important than keeping something on the telly cause Karen finds it funny? Confused

mylittlesandwich · 12/06/2020 06:11

People are acting as if we've banned the shows, as if we're pretending the didn't exist and "erasing history". They are just being dropped from streaming platforms. There's copies of these shows out there. I personally own the mighty boosh on dvd. I have no plans to burn it.

CompletelyFUBAR · 12/06/2020 06:22

Calls for Gavin and Stacey to be next. Madness.

Raaaa · 12/06/2020 07:37

Yes exactly @PhilCornwall1 will need to write up a list of what is and isn't allowed to be viewed/said

So dry you can't be funny at the expense of others? If you can only laughing when someone is crying then my gosh, that's so sad

You could start your own protest on this

If you're so sensitive that mighty boosh makes you cry then my gosh, that's so sad.

derxa · 12/06/2020 08:02

Are we banning Justin Trudeau now?

BroomHandledMouser · 12/06/2020 08:02

@VoldemortsMaid

Sorry - who’s Karen?

Stop with using the name in that context it makes you look like a dick

Melia100 · 12/06/2020 08:06

John Cleese isn't happy.

OnceUponACat · 12/06/2020 08:08

In regards to Gone With The Wind it is clear from this thread that the context they will provide once they reinstate it is much needed. GWTW is not a depiction of “those times” and “slavery”, it is a revisionist vision if it and so fake and wrong as it is the book.
However it is also great in many other ways so it will stay. But one need to know that it is not History.

That is the whole point.

And I love GWTW.

OnceUponACat · 12/06/2020 08:15

@Bleepbloopblarp if that is what you think about GWTW they’ve done well removing it. I suggest you read books about slavery written by black author rather than a book on slavery written by a white southerner lover of the Ol’ South.

I also suggest you listen to the podcasts by keistina longworth on the disney film “song of the south”.

It’ll be enlightening.

dkl55 · 12/06/2020 08:24

Yes interested to see that violence against women and films made by and starring sexual predators are fine. No ones objecting to those. As well as lots of violent porn online - that's all ok. (FWIW I'm not suggesting removal of all films by Weinstein etc. It's just interesting...)

OnceUponACat · 12/06/2020 08:36

@Samcro I read GWTW very recently and I was shocked at some parts. Uncomfortable ounch in the face parts. But some other bits are ok. In context it can be read and makes for good learning. In youth we concentrated in the feminist side of Rossella and the love. It can be re read with a different head.

And, in response to anotherposter, yes we can all say “i had not realise” and start from a place of humility.

OnceUponACat · 12/06/2020 08:40

@dkl55 it is not because we are addressing this issue that we cannot address that one. In fact it would be great if the do and maybe we, women, should massively protest about it. It would be about time. One good action does not deny another.

Stefoscope · 12/06/2020 09:40

Those shows have been on Netflix for at least a couple of years though, perhaps they were due to come off anyway? If they're removing anything remotely offensive, then they're not doing a great job. I caught a couple of episodes of a show called Pacific Heat a few nights ago. Pretty racist throughout and probably the least funny thing I've watched in quite a while. Oh and it was made in 2016 apparently...

hypernormal · 12/06/2020 09:50

OnceUponACat I agree with you re contextualising GWTW, however, why would anyone expect it to be an accurate portrayal of slavery anyway? It seems like people are expecting films to serve as documentaries, they don't appear to understand how fiction works. All fiction is selective and typically shows one point of view. Fiction uses poetic licence and often gets its facts wrong for the sake of the narrative. I understand and am sympathetic to the objections to GWTW, but I think people also need to recognise that it's not the job of fiction to indoctrinate in social justice, but to entertain. People can have discussions about the work to critique how accurate or fair it is, I don't think we should demand all films be politically correct, because this could lead to very poor quality storytelling and bandwagon jumping.

FFS the global pandemic means we are told to stay in our homes. Then we are encouraged to go and clap on our doorsteps. Now we are told what we can and can't watch and what we are allowed to find amusing.Hmm

It’s madness isn’t it? Bring back the good old days where you could lick as many public toilet seats as you wanted and go home to indulge in a good old festival of racism.

That is NOT what I am saying.
