I am in need of films that will actually keep me engaged and take my mind off my life at the moment, nice rom coms don't cut it right now! So please send your list of weird/disturbing/unsettling films my way

OP posts:

Ooh, I love a film thread!

So many of those previously posted but especially:

Joker. Has SO much to say about toxic masculinity, mental health... it stayed with me for days. It is not a superhero/villain film.

The Babadook. Especially if you're a mother. Really, really unsettling. Same goes for Hereditary (although does get quite ridiculous at the end).

One film which I love which almost nobody seems to have heard of which is both funny, moving and exciting is Two Hands, Heath Ledger as the lead. Highly recommended.

Flipping weird film. It’s pretty rubbish mind.

There’s a documentary series on Netflix called ‘Trial by media’ it’s about the case the film was based on- watched it aghast what that poor woman went through that night and after just shocking 😞 😢

The Magdalene Sisters. Not sure if its excactly the type you are after but I have seen it twice and it was quite sad.

@Heidi1976

Irreversible Antichrist Melancholia

Just warning you, these are really really disturbing!!

I pressed post before I had finished. There is a scene in the middle of irreversible that is filmed in one take and is just so real to watch. It really messed with my head and left me feeling a bit disturbed afterwards!! They also use sound in the film to make the viewer feel a bit sick.

Antichrist and Melancholia are two of Lars Von Triers 'Trilogy of Depression'. Make of that what you will! If you fancy a hat trick the final instalment is 'Nymphomaniac'.

I can't believe I forgot Eraserhead. I saw that when I was a teenager and it haunted me for years.

Yes to Jude too.

Smarshian · 30/05/2020 21:05

Detroit. Very thought provoking.

Doyoumind · 30/05/2020 21:05

A few have mentioned Irreversible. I mentioned Enter the Void earlier and it's the same director as Irreversible, which I chose not to watch after hearing about it.

ladymalfoy · 30/05/2020 21:05

Event Horizon.
In the Mouth of Madness

Two Hands, Heath Ledger

Great film!!! Debbie Harry is in it too 😎

I don't blame you. I literally had nightmares after watching Irreversible. Can't deny the filmmaking skill, but my god it's a head wrecker.
Coffeecak3 · 30/05/2020 21:11

And Soon the Darkness is from the 1970's. Don't know if it's available still. Two girls cycling in France. One vanishes and the other girl is searching for her. Still unsettles me all these years later.

CaveyWavey · 30/05/2020 21:15

I love horror movies but have never recovered from Saw. Only watched first one. I thought I was hardcore but this really affected me. Not sure how it would stand up now as it's quite old but I can't bring myself to watch it again!

augustusglupe · 30/05/2020 21:17

Pleasenodont Thought I’d be the only one to say Precious.
Delores Claiborne
Hostel
Wolf Creek
Don’t go to Sleep.

HforHotel · 30/05/2020 21:18

The Strangers is really daunting!!

HforHotel · 30/05/2020 21:19

Gallacia · 30/05/2020 21:20

The orphan

The strangers (really freaked me out and messed with my head for months)

Clavinova · 30/05/2020 21:21

Angel Heart
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
The Omen
Sophie's Choice
Papillon (Steve McQueen/Dustin Hoffman)
Philomena

HazelBite · 30/05/2020 21:24

Really old film, but The Boys from Brazileally made me think

MrsPworkingmummy · 30/05/2020 21:25

Dogtooth (Bizarre)
The Lobster (Quirky and engaging)
American History X (A simply brilliant film)
The Magdalane Sisters (Disturbing in that's it's a true story linked to Irish history - as recently as the 1990s too)

Katjolo · 30/05/2020 21:27

Shutter island

Sund0wnM00n20 · 30/05/2020 21:28
