Hairy armpits - liberating or gross?

As I'm unable to go swimming at the moment I haven't bothered/been able to keep up with many of my usual beauty/maintenance routines.

For the first time in my life I now sport long underarm hair and am quite fascinated by it! It's very unfashionable in England, but I like it. What are your experiences..?

I'm tempted to keep it and wondering wha

A personal choice and no one else's business.

masonmason · 23/05/2020 12:25

Absolutely gross

It's hair, not shit.

I shave mine very rarely.

PinkBuffalo · 23/05/2020 12:28

I not bother me if on someone else, but I hate the feel of it. So I shave under my arms and shave my legs just because it feels better for me personally.
I tend not to worry about anyone else each to their own Smile

jay55 · 23/05/2020 12:42

I get painful ingrown hairs in my armpits so I've not shaved during lockdown (also to save on razors) and I feel less sweaty and the hair is a lot softer than I expected.

Idontbelieveit12 · 23/05/2020 12:45

I’m pretty lucky in that I’m not very hairy. I’ve hardly any hair on my legs and the tiny ones I have are fair. I generally only shave my pits if people are going to be able to see 🙈

Toilenstripes · 23/05/2020 12:48

I did it in the 90s and actually got hit on by a couple of men in my apartment complex. This was in America. Apparently they interpreted my hairy pits as being a sign of sexual promiscuity.

rooarsome · 23/05/2020 12:49

It's natural but not for me. It makes me itch and feel sweaty. My legs on the other hand- I go months without shaving them

yelyah22 · 23/05/2020 12:54

I don't care either way really, I quite like it when my underarms get really hairy. But I also like them when they're clean shaven. So...neither!

Franticbutterfly · 23/05/2020 12:59

I'm not against body hair, but my DH isn't keen so I remove it periodically. I'm not fanatical about it.

Oblomov20 · 23/05/2020 13:02

I don't like underarm hair. Thus I guess I've been conditioned? I only shave mind when I absolutely have to. Mine doesn't grow very quickly though, so I can get away with every couple/few weeks.

Bunnymumy · 23/05/2020 13:03

I tried growing mine out this lockdown as I remember liking it as a teen. Turns out I dont now. It just annoys me. At least anything beyond the 3 week point. I don't think it's gross but for me it is annoying.

Crazybunnylady123 · 23/05/2020 13:05

I shave my legs in summer and not so much in winter but I’m not overly hairy.
I also shave my armpits, but I guess because it’s the done thing. But if I have some growth it doesn’t bother me. DP isn’t massively hairy, but I don’t mind his armpit hair. He doesn’t shave it and I’ve never really an opinion it’s his body.

Redwren · 23/05/2020 13:05

After reading this thread I'm thinking of not shaving and see how I get on. I usually shave my pits every other day. Personally I feel much sexier smooth but I'm willing to experiment.

TrickyKid · 23/05/2020 13:07

Neither. It's just hair. I shave mine occasionally but most of the time don't bother.

Likethebattle · 23/05/2020 13:11

it’s seen as disgusting because we are conditioned to see it that way. It’s as natural as eyebrow hair and is there for a reason.

LouLouLoo · 23/05/2020 13:28

Personal choice but I can’t bear hairy armpits.

A former colleague of mine left hers natural and she did smell, although she either didn’t realise, had just got used to it or possibly didn’t care.

EastMidsMumOf1 · 23/05/2020 13:28

Can I just ask those who do leave it hairy, what antiperspirant do you use that prevents them from sweating and smelling?

EpicDay · 23/05/2020 13:30

I really like my underarm hair. And very weirdly get more sweaty and smelly when I’ve shaved it. DH not a fan but he knows better than to complain ...

NannyR · 23/05/2020 13:33

EastMids I use a crystal deodorant stone, it doesn't stop sweating but there is no odour at all (for me at least, it might work differently for others).

Ijustreallywantacat · 23/05/2020 13:33

@EastMidsMumOf1 I wash daily with soap and use a roll on deodorant. I think its dove atm. I don't have BO as far as I know.

I think it's funny that people presume women with hair stink, but it's a non-issue with men. Poor personal hygiene will make you smell whether you are a man or a woman.

madcatladyforever · 23/05/2020 13:35

I dislike underarm hair on both men and women and it stinks by the end of the day and it's ugly on either sex. It repulses me.
My ex would lie in bed proudly displaying it with his hands behind his head while all I could smell was BO which made me feel sick.
I like smooth underarms like bodybuilders but each to their own I guess.

PafLeChien · 23/05/2020 13:35

I don't get how not shaving can be liberating though. If you're feeling that controlled by society then you've got bigger issues really.

very well said.

VoodooDonut · 23/05/2020 13:39

Wait...some men shave their armpits???

vampirethriller · 23/05/2020 13:41

Neither. It's just hair. Stick some deodorant on and forget about it.

lifestooshort123 · 23/05/2020 13:41

Gross
