Hairy armpits - liberating or gross?

As I'm unable to go swimming at the moment I haven't bothered/been able to keep up with many of my usual beauty/maintenance routines.

For the first time in my life I now sport long underarm hair and am quite fascinated by it! It's very unfashionable in England, but I like it. What are your experiences..?

I'm tempted to keep it and wondering wha

Gross. Yes it's just hair, but your sweat gets trapped in the hairs and that is what causes the smell. I couldn't care less if people didn't remove any other body hair but underarms are a necessity IMO.
Those people who say "I don't smell"- you 100% do, we all smell, we're just used to our own scents.

lazylinguist · 23/05/2020 10:24

Neither, for me. It's just hair.

^This. Also I'm not a smelly person either. FiveShelties - no, some people just don't really get body odour. I'm pretty sure it's genetic. I'm perfectly able to smell the smell if it's there. Dh gets smelly if he doesn't wear deodorant. I don't, and neither does teenage dd (unlike some of her friends).

lazylinguist · 23/05/2020 10:26

Google it - apparently about 2% of people don't smell when they sweat.

GladAllOver · 23/05/2020 10:26

Not bothered about any body hair. Armpits need wash/shower every day, so they don't have time to get rancid.
Fresh sweat is attractive. We often have sex after a jog, before the shower.

midnightstar66 · 23/05/2020 10:26

I do keep my shaved as it's sweaty enough in that area without an extra layer and obviously hair clings on to smell however I hadn't shaved my legs in ages. I have very fine sporadic leg hair but the hair that was there was so long. I should have left it to see how long it might get but I wanted to wear shorts on Wednesday when it was particularly hot. 😆

whatswithtodaytoday · 23/05/2020 10:26

I prefer to have it shaved or just stubbly - don't shave every day because it irritates my underarms, but so does having long hair that gets sweaty. I'm quite hairy, definitely not just a few stragglers here!

I leave my legs for weeks in the winter, but underarms get done once a week or so.

justanotherneighinparadise · 23/05/2020 10:27

I find I’m just more smelly if I don’t shave under my arms. For that reason alone it’s a no.

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 23/05/2020 10:27

Doesn't bother me either way, however if I do leave mine too grow I use dh deodorant/antiperspirant as I find womens stuff isn't as good.

pilates · 23/05/2020 10:28

Gross

UnsureOfFuture · 23/05/2020 10:30

I don't mind either way.

If they're not getting shown off then I don't bother.

I wash every morning regardless of hair length and use deodorant.

Actually find when they're hairy they smell better as the deodorant sort of clings to the hair.

My DHs armpits don't smell (only of deodorant) and he's never shaved his.

PineappleTart · 23/05/2020 10:30

It's just hair. Doesn't bother me on others or myself. Sometimes I shave, sometimes I don't.

vanillandhoney · 23/05/2020 10:32

I don't like it. It's sweaty and doesn't look nice imo.

Isawamagpie · 23/05/2020 10:32

Whenever I have seen a woman with underarm hair ive been slightly disgusted, fascinated and thought they were pretty cool, all in one giant hit.
Also have wondered if they are french???

I have no idea why I feel this range of emotions, except to say social conditioning.

In the end I actually don't care what other people do with thier bodies, but that is my "inital reaction"

I personally shave whenever I notice some growth, would love to let everything go but don't think I actually could...
I came home and shaved my legs a couple of days ago when I went out wearing trousers and wanted to change into shorts....

Timetospare · 23/05/2020 10:34

I had radiotherapy for breast cancer in my left breast over 3 years ago, and now that left armpit is completely hairless as it never grew back. I’m not bothered about shaving the right one now either,as it’s a bit of a faff for one pit and it’s a bit wispy and pale.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 23/05/2020 10:34

Like.. "fingers - exciting or damaging!?"

FiveShelties · 23/05/2020 10:37

@lazylinguist - I must have been unlucky then, the people I have worked with who insisted they did not smell, certainly did and having to tell people (in a nice way) that they smell is really difficult.

metalkprettyoneday · 23/05/2020 10:38

I only shave armpits and legs if I’m going to wear certain outfits in public. These days I like dresses/ tops with shoulders - no spaghetti straps etc. In winter I let them grow and still shower every day so no problems .

FeelingTheBurn · 23/05/2020 10:39

Personally, on my own armpits I find it gross.
I can't bring myself to care about other peoples armpits.

roratone · 23/05/2020 10:40

I really like it. Makes me feel sexy in a weird way. But. It does make me smellier and I'm not brave enough to wear a sleeveless top. I did Januhairy until mid-March but shaved it off when it was warm over Easter. Wish I was braver

totallyyesno · 23/05/2020 10:42

I left mine for a few years but I have recently found that my skin gets itchy using normal deodorant so I have switched to a natural one which is not so good so I started shaving again as I was smellier!

Oldraver · 23/05/2020 10:43

Ive never shaved though I only have a few whispy bits, I do need to use Mitchum 48hr cream though.....and what is this 48hr shit all about ? are they saying it would actually last that long, I mean who in their right mind would trust this and not was in 48hr ?

I do not find hair gross, it's natural and we should get back to not thinkig body hair id weird. My OH doent tend to smell (lucky thing) thoug he does still use deo

FergusSingsTheBlues · 23/05/2020 10:45

I used to grow mine because my little boy really thought that Women don’t have hair and I decided to debunk that one!! It was fine for me until the summer Envy not envy

VirginWestCoast · 23/05/2020 10:46

It's just hair. Although you do need to wash the area properly instead of just using deodorant. Obviously that applies to all armpits but they do tend to smell just a little bit more.
I'd say go for it. It's natural.

TheGinGenie · 23/05/2020 10:46

I don't like hair on myself but I couldn't give a fuck what anyone else does with their bodies

dun1urkin · 23/05/2020 10:47

I used to religiously epilate my pits, but then a couple of years ago just stopped and let it grow. It’s lovely and soft, and I also feel sexier.

I’m blonde though, my body hair is bountiful but also very fair and wonder if I’d feel the same way about it if it was dark.... dunno.

I do sometimes give it a trim as well, as it’s true natural length is looonnngg, longer than my DH’s pit hair, and so when the deodorant starts to clump- Envy not envy- it’s time for a trim Grin
