Acquitted but still impeached ... Trump thread 99

TheClaws · 12/02/2020 03:00

I’ll tell you a funny story. I’m a member of a very right-wing US politics online discussion group for kicks. The moderator of the group controls - and gets involved in - every discussion. (I should say the membership of this group is over 50K and the number of posts a day is generally 30 or so.) She’s also a typical Trumpian in that she reels off the standard “lamestream mass media” etc lines” and she mutes anyone who disagrees with her.

Anyway, I took her on eventually. She said that the Democratic candidates wanted to get rid of the Constitution. To this, I replied Trump flouts the Constitution on a regular basis. “What? Provide examples!” she replies. “Emoluments clause,” I replied. “That’s just one.”

GUYS. SHE HAD NOT HEARD OF THE EMOLUMENTS CLAUSE.

She then just spat something about she doesn’t read mass media lies and that’s why she didn’t know and muted me.

AIBU?

He really is disgusting isn't he? His fanbase would think it was wonderful to have exclusive rights on a vaccine, sell it to the rest of the world at a huge premium, and Trump can say that he healed the world.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 16/03/2020 12:25

That particular piece of grot may not actually have happened in the form it's being presented as having happened; more of a money-grubbing exercise than a political one, probably. Somebody was trying to buy the company; Trump couldn't afford that. (They wouldn't succeed anyway because Germany has laws about not allowing foreign takeovers that easily, but it makes good anti-Trump copy.)

I shall wait and see on that one; it might not be as bad as it first looks, and I don't want to give any excuse for any troll to say "You always believe the worst about Trump even when it's unproven."

lionheart · 16/03/2020 16:50

Yes. Let's see.

I haven't heard the word 'grot' for a long time. Smile

Roussette · 16/03/2020 16:51

Apparently he offered them £1bn. No idea if that's true or not.

I say 'grot' lots!

Oh I always assumed it was a money-grubbing exercise, AskingQuestions. Exclusive rights on the world's most desirable drug!

As you say though, fuller picture still to emerge.

The US administration seems to have been attempting to move the place of research. Presumably that would have patent and licensing consequences.

www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-germany-usa/germany-tries-to-stop-us-from-luring-away-firm-seeking-coronavirus-vaccine-idUSKBN2120IV
Berlin is trying to stop Washington from persuading a German company seeking a coronavirus vaccine to move its research to the United States, prompting German politicians to insist no country should have a monopoly on any future vaccine.
[...]
A German Health Ministry spokeswoman, confirming a quote in the newspaper, said: “The German government is very interested in ensuring that vaccines and active substances against the new coronavirus are also developed in Germany and Europe.”

Mockerswithnoknockers · 16/03/2020 20:12

From the live Trumpy press conference on CNN now:

"Mr President, does the buck stop with you?"
"Well normally, but this is an unprecendented situation..."

He's also showing an interest in cancelling elections.

PerkingFaintly · 16/03/2020 20:34

He's also showing an interest in cancelling elections.

See, this is really scaring me.

Postponing elections is something that I would need a deep breath to consider under any government – but might reluctantly agree on with very clear end dates.

Ditto various "war-footing" measures.

But now?

We have governments in both the US and the UK whose behaviour, FROM THE DAY THEY CAME INTO OFFICE, has been raising concerns they might try to undermine the constitution and extend their power or term beyond the usual.

And now they have the perfect excuse.

I'm really, really concerned about this.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 16/03/2020 20:46

That, I agree with; though in the UK it is mostly a case of anything bad that happens to the economy can now be blamed on coovid-19 rather than on Brexit. I doubt this crisis will last four more years.

Lweji · 17/03/2020 19:12

Kushner blamed for Trump's initial lack of response to COVID-19. Hmm

TheNorthWestPawsage · 17/03/2020 19:29

Then:
CNBC on Jan. 22: "Are there worries about a pandemic at this point?"

Trump's response: "No. Not at all. And we're we have it totally under control. It's one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It's going to be just fine."

Now:
Asked about his change in tone yesterday, Trump says, "I have seen that, where people actually liked it. But I didn't feel different. I've always known this is a real -- this is a pandemic." He then claims, "I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic."

PerkingFaintly · 17/03/2020 19:30

Any blaming of Kushner is still a win for Trump – because his base will be more than happy to blame the king's failures on the whisperings of an evil grand vizier.

Lweji · 17/03/2020 20:30

Exactly

lionheart · 18/03/2020 08:15

Lie and deflect. Lie and deflect.

And add some of this.

PerkingFaintly · 18/03/2020 11:18

Oh god, lionheart. Sad

There is no situation that this White House can't make worse, is there?

lionheart · 18/03/2020 11:45

I don't know. Trump has said that he is making an important announcement relating to the FDA this afternoon.

Meanwhile in other news, Iowa postponed their voting because of coronavirus but the other three yesterday went ahead. Biden won in Arizona, every county in Florida, and nearly every county in Illinois, and the World Service was reporting that numbers voting were actually UP in one of those states (but I can't remember which, because I was half-asleep when I heard it).

AcrossthePond55 · 18/03/2020 14:03

Getting serious here. MSNBC just reported that Scrotus is going to announce that our northern border will close to all but 'essential traffic' 'by mutual consent' (meaning Scrotus/Trudeau).

He's still calling it the 'Chinese Virus'. He really wants to be able demonize someone/thing for HIS debacle so let's point the finger at China for 'sending it to us'. Plus I suppose his irrational need to give everyone/everything a 'nickname'.
