Acquitted but still impeached ... Trump thread 99

I’ll tell you a funny story. I’m a member of a very right-wing US politics online discussion group for kicks. The moderator of the group controls - and gets involved in - every discussion. (I should say the membership of this group is over 50K and the number of posts a day is generally 30 or so.) She’s also a typical Trumpian in that she reels off the standard “lamestream mass media” etc lines” and she mutes anyone who disagrees with her.

Anyway, I took her on eventually. She said that the Democratic candidates wanted to get rid of the Constitution. To this, I replied Trump flouts the Constitution on a regular basis. “What? Provide examples!” she replies. “Emoluments clause,” I replied. “That’s just one.”

GUYS. SHE HAD NOT HEARD OF THE EMOLUMENTS CLAUSE.

She then just spat something about she doesn’t read mass media lies and that’s why she didn’t know and muted me.

Don't know where that random 'at' came from.

AcrossthePond55 · 02/03/2020 00:06

Buttigieg dropping out.

AcrossthePond55 · 02/03/2020 00:12

Hit enter too soon.

Pete is currently #3 in delegate count and way ahead of #4 (Warren) so I was rather surprised that he'd dropped out. But there's always more to these decisions than just 'the count'. I would have expected him to wait until after 'Super Tuesday' (day after tomorrow) before shutting things down.

Steyer was so far behind it didn't surprise me that he dropped out when he did. But he'd already paid $43 mil for ads for Super Tuesday so we're still seeing 'Vote for Steyer' ads on our TV.

Lweji · 02/03/2020 00:50

I got the feeling he was running out of funds.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 02/03/2020 11:21

It is possible that he made a deal with Joe Biden, I suppose. (says the cynic in me) That's where his votes are likely to go, I expect.

AcrossthePond55 · 02/03/2020 15:53

I don't know about a 'deal' per se, Asking, but I think that Pete's supporters will be more likely to start supporting Biden than Sanders as Joe's positions are closer in line with Pete's than Bernie's are.

What really upsets me the most is that I had finally learnt how to spell Buttigieg without it looking 'wrong' and spellchecking it! 😆

lionheart · 02/03/2020 16:47

If it comes to a deal, might some of the other candidates be a stronger choice for Biden? A woman, for example.

cozietoesie · 02/03/2020 17:31

He ''s leaving when he doesn't have to. That's powerful,

TheNorthWestPawsage · 02/03/2020 18:38

JUST IN: @amyklobuchar is flying to Dallas to join Vice President Biden at his rally tonight where she will suspend her campaign and endorse the Vice President.

AcrossthePond55 · 02/03/2020 18:40

You mean as VP, lion? Possibly. But Pete is young and a moderate, which makes him tick boxes that Warren doesn't (age 70 and more 'left' but not as left as Bernie). Klobuchar might be a better choice (age 59 & moderate) but she's just kinda 'meh' whereas Pete is more 'vibrant'.

I'm just speculating on who he'll throw his support behind 'in a general way'.

THIS JUST IN: I just got a newsflash that Klobuchar is ending her run and plans to endorse Biden.

AcrossthePond55 · 02/03/2020 18:42

X post North. I was typing as you hit post. lol

Things are beginning to narrow down a bit.

The field now is pretty much Biden, Sanders, and Warren.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 02/03/2020 18:47

So is it the case that if party members decide to cast an early vote and their chosen candidate subsequently drops out before their state's designated polling day then their vote is "wasted"? Or do they get a 2nd choice?

ludothedog · 02/03/2020 18:53

I really liked Buttigieg but I don't think that the states are ready for a president who's in a same sex marriage. Shame, he's really promising. I hope he runs again in a few years time.

I think mayor Pete and senator Clobechar have been pushed to stand aside now by the party in an attempt to stop Bernie.

AcrossthePond55 · 02/03/2020 19:10

North theoretically your vote is 'wasted'. You can only cast one ballot. `

But that's why candidates 'suspend' their campaigns rather than 'end' them. If they score 'big' in a primary after they suspend they can always stage a 'comeback'.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 02/03/2020 19:13

Thanks Across - makes sense!

AcrossthePond55 · 02/03/2020 19:55

My son heard that Pete is going to endorse Biden tonight.

My son 'knows a guy who knows a gal who knows a guy' who works at CNN, but so far his 'source' has gotten it right

Lweji · 02/03/2020 20:14

ludothedog

I agree. I hope Pete runs for Congress on the next election. Maybe that's part of the game plan.

lionheart · 02/03/2020 20:47

I hope so (even though I don't think Biden is the strongest candidate).

borntobequiet · 02/03/2020 21:07

Sorry to see Mayor Pete go. But perhaps this isn’t his time. One of the problems with Trump is that he besmirches all about him, including opponents. It wouldn’t matter for Biden or even Bloomberg. I’d like to see a President Pete, in saner times.

AcrossthePond55 · 03/03/2020 00:56

I'm watching Pete's and Biden's speeches. It certainly seems to be a mutual admiration society (not saying that sarcastically).

We may be looking at Biden/Buttigieg 2020, to be followed by Buttigieg/?? 2024.

AcrossthePond55 · 03/03/2020 01:27

I think Joe will be a one-term POTUS. He's 77 now. He'd be around 82 in 2024. So far the oldest POTUS at the end of his term was Reagan who was about 78 when he left office
