Who is BU re gym clothes?

DH goes to the gym most evenings in the week and when he comes back home, rather than jumping straight in the shower he decides to ‘relax’ on the sofa in his gym clothes for an hour or so before showering. DH actually runs to and from the gym in addition to the workout whilst he’s there, so always returns home smelling and looking very sweaty. Our sofa is fabric material and I’ve explained to DH that I find him sitting on the sofa in his sweaty clothes terribly unhygienic. If I walk in to the living room whilst he’s in there the whole room smells. I also don’t understand how it’s possible to relax whilst sitting around in clothes soaked in his own sweat Shock

I’ve asked DH numerous times to shower beforehand, which I don’t believe is a big ask. DH says I’m being ridiculous and controlling. Apparently not one other person would have a problem with it and most people relax after getting in from the gym before showering. Please tell me who is BU here.

God no that's rank.

LellyMcKelly · 05/02/2020 07:04

He is, the big minger. That’s just lazy and gross.

GinDaddy · 05/02/2020 07:06

If he has the energy to go to the gym, he has the energy to get straight into the shower once home. He can then "relax" afterwards.

Subeccoo · 05/02/2020 07:07

My dh runs to running club, then runs, then runs home so about 13 miles on a Wednesday night (oh how I love my Wednesday nights alone!) when he gets home he pops in to the living room to say hello, pops something in the oven if we've eaten at my dad's house then showers while it's cooking.
Completely gross the other way, he stinks understandably, especially in the winter as he has more synthetic layers on. He really looks forward to that clean sit down once he's all done.
Yadnbu.

YANBU.

I have the same conversation with DH who works in a manual job and comes home filthy - just get in the shower!!

TokyoSushi · 05/02/2020 07:09

YANBU at all! Totally grim!

CareBear50 · 05/02/2020 07:09

He is being a dirty minger of the highest order!!!! Utterly disgusting

PhoenixReincarnated · 05/02/2020 07:10

HIBVVVU

I started c25k last year so wasn't doing as much exercise as your dh. I always showered as soon as I got back.

TheRugbyValkyrie · 05/02/2020 07:10

I'm with all the previous posters on this one.
Unbelievably gross behaviour on your husband's part.
Perhaps you could start spraying febreeze on the sofa while he is sitting on it and give him a squirt of deodorant while you're at it.

Yeahnah2020 · 05/02/2020 07:11

He is. That’s disgusting

TheRugbyValkyrie · 05/02/2020 07:12

Having thought about it a bit longer, why on earth doesn't he shower at the gym?

Hullahoop · 05/02/2020 07:13

@TheRugbyValkyrie because he runs home afterwards and would therefore get sweaty again on the way home.

I run 3-4 times a week and shower straight away. Might stop in the kitchen to have a drink / quick snack / check my Strava but wouldn’t be sitting and spreading my sweat around. He is gross

I think an hour is unreasonable, but he'll need to cool off from his run home before showering as you'd want to stop sweating before getting in the shower? That said when I'm cooling down it's more like 15mins sat on the floor so I don't contaminate the furniture...

Sirzy · 05/02/2020 07:17

Me and my DP have both been known to potter around doing jobs when we have got in from the gym/ run but neither of us is the type who stink after a workout and we would both shower and clean before sitting down to relax

PhoneLock · 05/02/2020 07:18

Perhaps there is no shower at the gym. There isn't at mine. I shower as soon as I get to home or work though.

fiorentina · 05/02/2020 07:22

I sat next to a guy on a packed train who had clearly run to the station. I understand using that time for exercise but it was really unpleasant sitting next to someone so sweaty and smelly. I think your DH is totally unreasonable not showering when he gets back.

DeludedMumofPFB · 05/02/2020 07:24

DH will sit down for 5-10 minutes after a run or workout. He sits on the wipe-downable stool though and drips onto the tiled floor, there's no way he'd be sitting on the sofa or in the carpeted rooms. If it's warm enough, he sits outside.

Dilbertian · 05/02/2020 07:24

My dh also runs, and dislikes showering as soon as he gets home. He says he is too hot straight after a run, and just continues sweating after the shower, which he dislikes. He sits on a kitchen chair drinking a bucket of tea and doing the newspaper puzzles or watching stuff on his phone, until he is ready to shower. If he were to sit on the sofa (very rare occurrence) he would put a big towel down first.

But I'm puzzled about the smell. Fresh sweat doesn't smell bad IME. Only when it's stale. Dh's running clothes go to the wash after every run (they go in the basket dry, but if a few days pass until the load gets put in, then the basket humms a bit) and his shoes stay out in the porch until aired off. So he's not pongy while cooling down after a run. Smells rather masculine and yummy, actually!

blondiebrowneyes · 05/02/2020 07:26

He's disgusting. Show him the thread!

Damntheman · 05/02/2020 07:29

You both are I'm afraid. He needs to strip off the gross clothes BEFORE he sits on the sofa. But it's pointless showering right away after running back from the gym as he'll still be sweating. I need to wait at least half an hour personally, but then I don't rub my sweat all over the fabric sofa..

Compromise, he strips off the tshirt at least (and leaves it outside, that shit stinks), and he sits on a dining chair until he showers in an hour.

Dil, fresh sweat CAN smell rank, it depends how hard the body was pushed during the work out.

Fairylea · 05/02/2020 07:29

If he really stinks then it’s pretty gross but dh and I don’t really sweat that much or smell from the gym so it wouldn’t really bother me. When I used to do a lot of dance cardio I’d come home and have lunch and watch tv for a bit and then have a shower.

HomerSimpsonSmilingPolitely · 05/02/2020 07:29

most people relax after getting in from the gym before showering.

I have never known anyone to do this. Your DH is crazy.
