Who is BU re gym clothes?

DH goes to the gym most evenings in the week and when he comes back home, rather than jumping straight in the shower he decides to ‘relax’ on the sofa in his gym clothes for an hour or so before showering. DH actually runs to and from the gym in addition to the workout whilst he’s there, so always returns home smelling and looking very sweaty. Our sofa is fabric material and I’ve explained to DH that I find him sitting on the sofa in his sweaty clothes terribly unhygienic. If I walk in to the living room whilst he’s in there the whole room smells. I also don’t understand how it’s possible to relax whilst sitting around in clothes soaked in his own sweat Shock

I’ve asked DH numerous times to shower beforehand, which I don’t believe is a big ask. DH says I’m being ridiculous and controlling. Apparently not one other person would have a problem with it and most people relax after getting in from the gym before showering. Please tell me who is BU here.

Mine has a thing about needing to stop sweating before he gets in a hot shower. Maybe its a similar thing.

LouHotel · 05/02/2020 09:18

Ugh I can’t cope with this, how can he sit down with cold back sweat!

Lay a bloody towel on the sofa like he’s a dog.

tiedy · 05/02/2020 09:21

A large waterproof dog blanket sounds like a good compromise.

MinesaPinot · 05/02/2020 09:23

No, OP, that's horrid. I wouldn't be entertaining that, especially on a fabric sofa! I do Zumba and ballet classes once a week and I have a shower as soon as I come in. Whilst I'm not a particularly sweaty person, even after exercise, I wouldn't feel comfortable sitting in my dance clothes.

Manky git

lottiegarbanzo · 05/02/2020 09:28

Urgh. I'm pretty relaxed about cleanliness, by MN standards e.g. bathe DC 3 or 4 times a week, sometimes shower only every other day myself, if no sweatiness or dirt. I would never do this.

Your sofa will deteriorate. It will need cleaning sooner. It will need replacing earlier. No-one else will want to sit on it in the meantime.

He could sit in the kitchen until he cools down. Or walk the last five mins home so he arrives cooler and ready to shower.

What I get from this is that he does not value 'stuff' / has no idea of the cost of 'stuff' as it's always been provided by someone else / specifically does not value your stuff and stuff you care about.

HWBplus2 · 05/02/2020 09:28

Hubby must have a fit bod with all that exercise. Rip those sweaty clothes off him, push him in the shower and offer to wash that sweat off him yourself. Lucky OP.

chocolateandpinkgin · 05/02/2020 09:29

Ewwww no. I run and I come home absolutely stinking Grin there's no way I'd be lying on the sofa for an hour forcing everyone else to put up with that haha. It's right that you need to cool down for a little bit before showering but I tend to just wander round doing any jobs that need doing (load the dishwasher etc) then within 5-10 mins I'm in the shower. Job done. He is being a bit icky to be honest.

inwood · 05/02/2020 09:30

Really really rank. He'll have not only his own sweet but other peoples' on him if uses machines / Mat / floor. I have to take my gym stuff off straight away!

Thebookswereherfriends · 05/02/2020 09:31

Put a sheet/throw over the sofa before he comes back, tell him to sit on that and he washes the throw when he puts his gym stuff in.

lottiegarbanzo · 05/02/2020 09:32

And any chance all the cleaning and sofa-protection advice could be directed towards the DH is great and important self, not his cleaner / wife?

tenlittlecygnets · 05/02/2020 09:32

He is grim and rank!!

When dh runs he comes home and showers straight away OR sits in dining room to cool down - he would not sit on sofa in sweaty clothes! He also washes his gear straight away so it's not wafting sweat around the house...

Why not show your dh this thread?

lottiegarbanzo · 05/02/2020 09:32

'his' not is

ScrambledSmegs · 05/02/2020 09:33

My DH does similar and I agree, it's gross. The smell is odd, sort of hot and salty when he's just got in, and then it becomes more of a generic BO smell as he cools down Envy

I'm tempted to show him this thread but don't really want to start WW3.

DarklyDreamingDexter · 05/02/2020 09:36

That’s gross. You’re right, the sofa will soon start to stink if it absorbs sweat. I have a shower as soon as I’ve done any vigorous exercise, and so does my partner. Apart from the obvious cleanliness angle, it just feels refreshing! What’s not to like about a shower after an intense workout/run? Show him this thread. Or get used to covering up the sofas with heavy duty dust sheets before he sits down, like the type you’d use when decorating!

waterlego · 05/02/2020 09:38

I exercise a lot and can’t wait to get in the shower when I get home. Especially at the moment because as soon I stop moving, I get cold very quickly as I am drenched in sweat. 😖 I actually sit on a towel in the car because I don’t want to get sweat on the car seats.

ASureSign · 05/02/2020 09:51

Ask him to sit on a blanket. I like to cool off for quite a while after an intensive workout. I’d want to sit on a sofa and not a dining room chair.

sonypony · 05/02/2020 09:51

We are not house proud in this house and both DH and I think he's being hugely unreasonable. That's disgusting. Maybe get a cover or large towel for the sofa he can wash (not that you should have to)

Marbu · 05/02/2020 09:54

Grim. If he needs to wait 10 minutes or so until he stops sweating then he can sit in the kitchen on a stool. He shouldn't be sitting around for an hour or more making the entire living room stink and ruining the sofa.

reluctantbrit · 05/02/2020 09:54

DH needs a "cooling off" period, catching his breath, drinking water, when he comes home after a run.

But he has to sit either on the steps or stand and the windows of whatever room he is in are immediately wide open.

No way he would sit for 1 hour on the sofa without being thrown out of the room.

IntermittentParps · 05/02/2020 09:55

Might be acceptable if he put on a hoodie and sweat pants over the sweaty gym stuff. But he would still smell. It's basically rank.

FraglesRock · 05/02/2020 09:55

Rank. Buy him a special blanket to sit and lean against. Then after a week get him to smell it.
Bonus points if you get a dog to sleep on it too..

Geekster1963 · 05/02/2020 09:56

He is being unreasonable. I run and I stink when I get home. Like you say that type of clothes hold the smell too. I always go for a shower when I get in. I couldn’t sit around in my running clothes not just because I stink but I would get cold too.

NotAPan · 05/02/2020 10:01

For the people who say you need to stop sweating before you shower, don’t they just run the water cold so it’s refreshing? Then warm it up for washing and finish on the cold setting to feel fresh?

That sounds like a recipe to put my muscles into tight knotted spasm to me.

But then I cool down with stretches and such in the gym and shower there or the moment I get in.
