Who is BU re gym clothes?

DH goes to the gym most evenings in the week and when he comes back home, rather than jumping straight in the shower he decides to ‘relax’ on the sofa in his gym clothes for an hour or so before showering. DH actually runs to and from the gym in addition to the workout whilst he’s there, so always returns home smelling and looking very sweaty. Our sofa is fabric material and I’ve explained to DH that I find him sitting on the sofa in his sweaty clothes terribly unhygienic. If I walk in to the living room whilst he’s in there the whole room smells. I also don’t understand how it’s possible to relax whilst sitting around in clothes soaked in his own sweat Shock

I’ve asked DH numerous times to shower beforehand, which I don’t believe is a big ask. DH says I’m being ridiculous and controlling. Apparently not one other person would have a problem with it and most people relax after getting in from the gym before showering. Please tell me who is BU here.

Filthy arrogant pig

I'd buy one of those really horrid plastic covers and keep it on there to make a point.

I sort of understand that he wants to get his breath back and cool down, but that's not nice to sit on a fabric sofa.

TrickyKid · 05/02/2020 10:14

Grim. The sofa covers must need constantly washing, I hope he does them and doesn't leave it to you.

FlowerArranger · 05/02/2020 10:22

I agree it's grim, but I also think this is a case of pick your battles.

Ask him to strip off his smelly gym gear and put on a designated post-workout dressing gown.

Get a waterproof dog blanket for the sofa.

Really, if he's lovely otherwise, I'd let this go Smile

YANBU because that affects other people.

YABU, that's up to him. I quite often get home from the gym and don't change immediately while I do other stuff, so what? I have a shower at the end of it all.

79andnotout · 05/02/2020 10:35

YADNBU but I also do this. Not on the fabric sofa but on the leather one. I don't really stink though, and my sweat has dried by the time I walk back. Also I have two big dogs and two cats so the house isn't exactly pristine anyway.

LochJessMonster · 05/02/2020 10:38

But he has to sit either on the steps or stand and the windows of whatever room he is in are immediately wide open Wtf? In his own house? Only one of you is being U there, and its not him...

tbh OP, this wouldn't bother me, unless he is sweating enough to be able to ring out his t-shirt (unlikely) its not that big of a deal.

And as a grown man I think he is entitled to sit on his sofa if he wants, rather than a dining room chair.

KarmaStar · 05/02/2020 10:48

Put plastic sheeting on the sofa before he gets back😀

reluctantbrit · 05/02/2020 10:48

@LochJessMonster

So you think it is ok to have one person stinking up a room and leaving sweat stains on fabric?

DH admits himself that he is drenched in sweat and stinks. I do accept that he needs to cool down before jumping in the shower.

I see it the same as when DD comes back from the riding stable covered in horse hair and muck or coming back from a Scout trip in the wilderness covered in mud. I make her strip as well before she sets too many steps into the house.

Similar to me changing and showering when I come back from a cookery lesson where we cooked for 3 hours and I do smell of food.

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/02/2020 11:00

Disgusting and disrespectful to you.

thecatsthecats · 05/02/2020 11:04

I will only sit on our wooden bar stools or on the laminate floor if I need a few minutes before the shower (say, for a face mask).

AryaStarkWolf · 05/02/2020 11:15

gross

CoraPirbright · 05/02/2020 11:41

Does anyone else’s husband turn things yellow like mine does? You should see our fabric headboard on his side and also the mattress cover - all gross and yellow. I think he is rather on the oily side!! If your dh is like this then your sofa is going to get trashed before long!

Make him sit on some towels or something if he really must do this but urrrgh! Gross!
