Who is BU re gym clothes?

DH goes to the gym most evenings in the week and when he comes back home, rather than jumping straight in the shower he decides to ‘relax’ on the sofa in his gym clothes for an hour or so before showering. DH actually runs to and from the gym in addition to the workout whilst he’s there, so always returns home smelling and looking very sweaty. Our sofa is fabric material and I’ve explained to DH that I find him sitting on the sofa in his sweaty clothes terribly unhygienic. If I walk in to the living room whilst he’s in there the whole room smells. I also don’t understand how it’s possible to relax whilst sitting around in clothes soaked in his own sweat Shock

I’ve asked DH numerous times to shower beforehand, which I don’t believe is a big ask. DH says I’m being ridiculous and controlling. Apparently not one other person would have a problem with it and most people relax after getting in from the gym before showering. Please tell me who is BU here.

That is gross. Yuk.

SilverLake · 05/02/2020 08:20

Another vote for him not sitting on the sofa. Rank. He should be spending his cooling down time stretching. Is he getting spots from hanging around in sweaty kit for too long? Perhaps that might motivate him to shower and change.

minipie · 05/02/2020 08:21

Re the smell: fresh sweat doesn’t smell, but it only takes a short time to start smelling. So the smell is probably from the sweat he built up on the way there rather than the way back iyswim.

YANBU OP. Grim and it’s going to ruin your sofa.

You could buy one of those dog sofa blankets Grin he might get the message.

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 05/02/2020 08:23

Ewww, the absolute minger! That’s rotten! Tell the stinky thing to get in the shower!

CalmFizz · 05/02/2020 08:24

For the people who say you need to stop sweating before you shower, don’t they just run the water cold so it’s refreshing? Then warm it up for washing and finish on the cold setting to feel fresh?

Dontunderestimateme · 05/02/2020 08:25

That is pretty grim and I have low standards when it comes to cleanliness. Agree with the suggestion that he at least sit on a towel when he is sweaty as a compromise of sorts.

Ellie56 · 05/02/2020 08:26

That's gross. I'd put an old dustsheet over the sofa before he comes back from the gym.

justgivemewine · 05/02/2020 08:26

He is unreasonable, it’s rank.🤮

“so it’s not stale clothing that’s the problem.”. - no but his gross sweatiness will get into the sofa where it won’t get washed thoroughly like clothes and then that will start to stink stale and sweaty.

CalmFizz · 05/02/2020 08:28

I think if I were you op I’d lay out thick blankets on the sofa, then those puppy training incontinence pads on top, about 6/8 of them, have the windows wide open and a air freshener that you spray liberally as soon as he gets home all around the room.

If he wants to behave like a messy slob then treat him like one.

MaggieFS · 05/02/2020 08:31

It's disgusting. DH sometimes tries this when he gets home from a run - I have no problem with the need to cool down and stop sweating before showering - but when I remind him how grim it is, he lies down on the floor, or sits on a dining chair, both wooden.

TryTry123 · 05/02/2020 08:32

Go, the job is unsustainable. Enjoy yourself while you are still able bodied. Even a few mini breaks to Europe.

TryTry123 · 05/02/2020 08:34

Wrong feed!

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 05/02/2020 08:36

My husband needs some time to stop sweating before getting in the shower otherwise he carries on sweating and just stays gross after the shower. Only 15 min or so and he will often sit on the sofa, but its leather and easy to wipe down. Sweating into a fabric sofa is gross

Halloweenbabyy · 05/02/2020 08:40

It wouldn’t bother me Confused

anyoldvic · 05/02/2020 08:45

He needs to be told that it's not "controlling" to point someone in the direction of the shower when they are sweaty and smelly!

Just because he's an adult doesn't make him immune to being informed when he's doing something that is offensive to you and plain gross for your sofa.

StoneColdSaidSo · 05/02/2020 08:48

Nope it’s just gross. Tell him to jump in the shower straight away or sit on a chair that can be wiped clean. So glad I have leather sofas!

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 05/02/2020 08:53

he needs a blanket on the settee that can be washed if he's going to do that.

To be fair, it can go too far the other way too - DP showers in the morning then before going to the gym, then he showers after working out at the gym. Still leaves his stinking gym bag hanging around in the kitchen :( (on that note, who buys a leather gym bag. It's heavy, it seems to just collect the smelll of his kit, and it can't be washed.)

ScrommidgeClaryAndSpunt · 05/02/2020 08:54

Minging. Our DS1 (14) could represent Team GB, if soap-dodging were an Olympic sport, and even he gets straight in the shower after training (rugby, in his case)

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 05/02/2020 08:55

OhhhOOOOOOO

could you get one of those black light torches and maybe show him how much his sweat is soaking into the settee?

it would be gross.. but illuminating..

Hotchox · 05/02/2020 08:56

Yeah, I can well understand why he doesn't want to shower immediately after finishing the run home. It's not worth it if you get out of the shower and are still sweating (which for some people goes on for a good ten minutes after finishing exercise). You need to change tack OP - allow him his cool-down time, but only somewhere that won't soak up the sweat and smell - maybe suggest he goes for a walk round the block as part of a warm-down, and does his stretches in the bathroom or outside (he should be stretching out as part of his recovery anyway - it's just as important as stretching before exercise....)

fishonabicycle · 05/02/2020 08:57

That is horrible. Stinky git.

luckylavender · 05/02/2020 09:01

That's gross!

Nanny0gg · 05/02/2020 09:01

Control away. He's foul.

Campurp · 05/02/2020 09:01

Yuck! I don’t even like my husband hugging me when he’s sweaty from the gym!

amusedbush · 05/02/2020 09:09

DH is a postman, his walk is all tenement flats with no lifts so when he gets home (especially in the summer) he is really sweaty. I've caught him trying to sit on the sofa a couple of times and I will bark at him to get in the shower before his sweaty back touches the fabric! Envy (not envy)
