To not get the panic about Corona Virus?

speakout · 24/01/2020 21:52

I am not getting it- can someone explain?

Less than 1000- people infected, 26 dead. Why the hype?
I understand a few pharma companies making anti virals have made a stack of money in the past week.
In global health terms these stats are insignificant surely.
Why all the headlines?
I suspect we have many pathogens jumping species barriers on a regular basis, most probably fade away and don' t make headlines.

Can someone explain.

I'm not panicking, what's the point? If it comes then I dont think theres treatment, so it will either get you or it wont. Throughout history there have been killer diseases, plagues etc, very sad for those affected but the human race will never be invincible to disease.

AmelieTaylor · 25/01/2020 20:00

@Plantainchips

I think the whole “hubby mansplaining” is that it’s frustrating when a woman comes on here, not being an expert herself, but says “ oh my husband is insert impressive professional thing”. He should come on here and explain it, rather than his wife

Why?

What do any of them owe any of us?

It’s completely different than when someone says ‘oh MY DH thinks

I’m sure @HuloBeraal is competent enough to pass on her DH’s information & to suggest otherwise is insulting

AmelieTaylor · 25/01/2020 20:06

I tend to think it’s being played DOWN rather than up by China. They denied it initially & have ‘form’ for denial until they have absolutely no option but to tell at least part of the truth ...and I think that’s all we are getting niw - a down played part of the truth.

HuloBeraal · 25/01/2020 20:14

Yes as I nicely pointed out I am actually a professor of history. Happy to answer historical questions. But my knowledge of pandemics is minimal.

Thelnebriati · 25/01/2020 20:22

HuloBeraal I think your DH would do an interesting AMA.

100%

HuloBeraal · 25/01/2020 20:35

He really really wouldn’t. 😆😆 What would be fun though would be to have him debate an anti vaxxer. He would actually EXPLODE.
Did I mention...when I went into labour I said to him (still early, pain still okay), that I didn’t want to say this earlier but I really didn’t want to vaccinate our kids. (Kidding obviously).
I should have videoed the moment. He didn’t know whether he should just walk out. Or whether his labouring wife needed support. Or both. Or WTF. His face was the very picture of WTF.

😆😆😆😂😂😂😂😂😂

Thelnebriati · 25/01/2020 20:38

Oh thats cruel.
but v. funny Grin

AmelieTaylor · 25/01/2020 21:06

@HuloBeraal - what a shame you didn’t/couldn’t record his reaction 🤣

Re your name - I had to look them up. I had just assumed it was a ‘accented’ ‘Hello Beryl’ 🤣 probably from some TV program I don’t watch it from years ago 🤣

AmelieTaylor · 25/01/2020 21:07

probably from some TV program I don’t watch it from years ago

Bloody phone.

Probably from some tv program I don’t watch, or from years ago!

LovePoppy · 25/01/2020 23:27

No mansplaining but WHO have issued guidance which rather suggests spread outside of China is likely and a global pandemic is possible.

It’s already spread.

Skyejuly · 26/01/2020 08:33

China is definitely downplaying it.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 26/01/2020 16:07

This is piping up on the video with the Irish man.

To not get the panic about Corona Virus?

I am a scientist in the healthcare industry - not paid by big Pharma for full transparency. I used to live and work in China, and additionally worked personally with an international infectious diseases group of leading physicians throughout the SARS outbreak. I am watching this very closely. I won't repeat facts already listed by others in this thread, but to emphasise numbers will have been massively downplayed by the Chinese government. They are now panicking - you don't shut down an entire province of 50 million people for such a small proportion of deaths. The virus has now killed an individual who was otherwise healthy which rings alarm bells around mutation and general virulence. Healthcare in China is shocking, censorship is rife. Big Pharma won't make anything much financially out of this, share prices of some companies may have gone up but that's most likely a short term market reaction imo. The big money for them is elsewhere as a PP pointed out. The school my children used to go to (international school of over 2500 kids) has just shut for a month as a result extending their typical CNY break. The other two schools of similar size in that region of Shanghai are about to do the same. Those decisions aren't taken lightly. It will be clearer over the next week how it pans out, but don't underestimate the volume of Chinese citizens who travel globally during the Chinese New Year celebrations, it's literally insane and hard to imagine if you haven't seen it. If the virus is infectious during incubation stages it will spread tremendously quickly.

Roomba · 26/01/2020 16:29

I can remember all the fuss about swine flu and bird flu which both came to nowt.

One of my colleagues died of swine flu and two others ended up extremely ill in hospital with it. They had months off work recuperating and one still has long term health issues because of it. I'm in a small NW town and remember a lot of people being ill with it at the time. Don't think you can really say it 'came to nowt'?

disconnecteddrifter · 26/01/2020 16:32

My mum died of swine flu as did a friend's dad.

Skyejuly · 26/01/2020 17:06

I'm reading station 11 and it feels so close to home.

LovePoppy · 26/01/2020 17:15

@disconnecteddrifter I’m so sorry for your loss, and the downplaying of the disease that killed her

TSSDNCOP · 26/01/2020 17:15

That Irish man sounds so calm. Even when he said during SARS the quarantine was 3 months.

DanceItOut · 26/01/2020 17:30

YANBU not to panic because in most countries it's not really necessary to panic yet, just stay informed.

I have a friend who has a huge immune system problem and every virus she gets could kill her, she is panicking but that is reasonable for her because of her on going condition.

I'm not massively worried or anything. Yet. I'm staying informed. Because it could become something I need to panic about, in which case I will panic then.

Justaboy · 26/01/2020 17:36

If the virus is infectious during incubation stages it will spread tremendously quickly.

Yes i reckon thats the the bit thats spooking them mightly!

They may well know more than they admit to but in practice what can they do apart from what there're already doing trying to keep people from circulatling?

And that raises another issue if they are infectious in the incubation stage persumeably thats before the sneezing and coughing starts up how is it transmitting ?, is it just caried as miniute particles in the breath or how?.

Or in the incubation stages are they sneezing and its doing it that way before the body temp starts to rise?

And how long is anyone infectious for before they aren't infectious so how long would anyone coming from there to here would have to stay in quarrintine for? Which i suspect will be implemented?.

Limensoda · 26/01/2020 17:41

It's unreasonable to panic. It doesn't help anyone.

bananasplitsallround · 26/01/2020 18:16

I have no idea. Could be a problem. Might not be. But you are right to question the media. Everything is sensationalised and sadly one day we won’t pay any notice because the media cried wolf.

SpecLosers · 26/01/2020 18:33

My corner shop is great, sells everything you could ever think of. A Chinese man runs it and he is my friend now. He was wearing a mask this morning!

Before I asked, he told me he is taking no chances! Lovely man and he is concerned about his relatives (not in the area of concern) who are in Beijing.

I dunno what to think. But I have my doubts about the veracity of information coming from China. That's all.
