To not get the panic about Corona Virus?

speakout · 24/01/2020 21:52

I am not getting it- can someone explain?

Less than 1000- people infected, 26 dead. Why the hype?
I understand a few pharma companies making anti virals have made a stack of money in the past week.
In global health terms these stats are insignificant surely.
Why all the headlines?
I suspect we have many pathogens jumping species barriers on a regular basis, most probably fade away and don' t make headlines.

Can someone explain.

It seems to be more infectious than SARS (I think that involved about 5000 in China, whereas this current virus is already up to 1000 and seems to rapidly increasingly).

But maybe less virulent - SARS 11% case fatality rate and so far current virus 4% (41 deaths, 1000 cases, Guardian website currently).

But I guess will be a few more weeks 'till we accurately know how infective/virulent it really is...

SARS was pretty scary - I was working in a downtown hospital in Toronto at the time.

Hedgehogblues · 25/01/2020 00:41

It's not bloody mansplaining if the man in question IS an expert on the subject he's talking about Hmm

DemelzaandRoss · 25/01/2020 00:42

The worst pandemic in 1918 affected 500 million people. Up to 50 million died. Maybe that’s why some people are concerned.

Crackerandgarliccheese · 25/01/2020 00:48

Yawwwwn. Don't even bother watching this news!! I remember a daily mail news headline in 2006, it said something like 800,000 will die from bird flu! Schools will close!! Apocalypse!! Etc...tbh silly young me was scared!! It's nothing, another news hype. 🙈

Lycidas · 25/01/2020 00:50

Posts thread with a mildly contentious opinion.

Attacks anyone who offers a contrary perspective.

boatyardblues · 25/01/2020 00:54

HuloBeraal - I appreciated your (DH’s) explanation, even if other people are being dicks about it. Thank you.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 25/01/2020 00:59

My advice, do not watch Pandemic on Netflix’s Shock

GarlicSoup · 25/01/2020 00:59

@HuloBeraal very interesting thank you.

Marahute · 25/01/2020 01:11

Well I don't know much about anything, but some of the footage I have just watched on Twitter is quite worrying. I also wouldn't be entirely surprised if China are downplaying the situation...

Freezingold · 25/01/2020 01:13

It’s fine to report this and any media I’ve heard has been informative and measured. It is a new virus, spread from wild animals, so always a concern as its unknown how fast it spreads and how serious, so it’s good WHO, China and others have gathered info and put measures in place.

It’s not paranoia or big pharma or conspiracy theories.

I don’t think we should blame the media. It’s The Public, us reading it who should actually read it from a credible source, and not scare monger ourselves! As the media this time is not. Well not the BBC!

So far, it’s right I think China have locked down the city as much as it can. However it has not so far shown that it is an extreme world risk. Uk are on low risk I think, so hospitals should be gearing up for extra cases and reading the spread is very important.

HuloBeraal · 25/01/2020 01:28

Let’s not give DH a big head. He got me a nice birthday gift and is anyway feeling quite smug. 🙄 I’ll happily put more questions to him tomorrow if anyone has any.
Has anyone played the board game Pandemic btw?!

Bunnyfuller · 25/01/2020 01:29

@AllergicToAMop

Oh well...if it was in the DM it must be factual....

BusyMumHere · 25/01/2020 01:51

@HuloBeraal I have played the Pandemic board game. To be honest it frightens me because of the situation it represents and so I don't like playing it. (I know, I know, I am bhitu)

"Ah someone who knows what it means. I have 3 of them btw. Each more nyaka than the next and not very hulo like at all."
I had 2 of them growing up. I grew up in an area (Laban Hrad - if I have guessed correctly which part of the world you might have an association with, you would understand this!) which had many nyaka, boka and paka ones. They would sprawl on the terrace & gardens in winter and hide under our beds in summer!
Now living in London I don't have any. Miss them though!

(I had a long and arduous day at work today. Your username really lifted my spirit as I was reminded of my beautiful childhood. Thank you! Smile)

PixieDustt · 25/01/2020 01:58

That's Hulo for your husbands information.
OP is rude.
She opened the thread with 'can someone explain?'
Someone explained it and OP didn't like it.
Ignorance kills.

PixieDustt · 25/01/2020 01:58

Thanks*

“Good we have a "hubby expert" to mansplain things.”

HmmBiscuit

Don’t start a thread asking for answers if when the answer comes from an expert you don’t like it 😂

anotherBadAvatar · 25/01/2020 06:21

One day a pandemic WILL come. There’s more of us living in close proximity to each other now, and with global travel being so widespread, a virus can spread exponentially.

What we don’t know is when and how this will start.

Ignoring a novel virus would be perilous on a WHO level, because they cant say for certain that this strain will fizzle out yet, or become the next Spanish flu.

So yes, the media may hype this, but let’s just be thankful that a bit of daily mail induced hysteria is the worse we’ve had to deal with so far.

curiousierandcouriser · 25/01/2020 06:40

I'm currently living in China and I can say that though I'm not worried for myself, I am taking sensible precautions (hand washing, masking up, etc). Its quite quiet over here due to Chinese New Year holiday. The authorities have declared school and public attraction closures in my city as a precaution for the next few weeks at least.

I am concerned for the children, elderly or anyone who has a compromised immune system.

finn1020 · 25/01/2020 07:00

We’ve just cancelled a planned trip to China early April. It’s clear this is going to hang around for at least the next few months.

TartanMarbled · 25/01/2020 07:10

It's just a particularly catchy and bad flu. It's not the zombie virus. Calm down.

101pupzet · 25/01/2020 08:08

Does anyone know what the incubation time for Coronavirus is? How long after contracting the virus do symptoms present?

FredaFrogspawn · 25/01/2020 08:19

There’s an interesting docu-series on Netflix at the moment about pandemics. It has a nice focus on the people like your husband (I am going to ignore the rude op - this thread is yours now @huloberaal - looking at their lives and families and their struggles for funding.

Would your dh or an other such qualified person on here consider doing an ‘Ask me Anything’ thread? I have so many questions!

captainpantbeard · 25/01/2020 08:30

I thought it caused pneumonia? Which is more than a nasty flu.

AllergicToAMop · 25/01/2020 08:34

@Bunnyfuller I agree. It doesn't look like non tabloid newspapers picked it up

Igneococcus · 25/01/2020 09:08

@Bunnyfuller I agree. It doesn't look like non tabloid newspapers picked it up

There are currently four article about it on the front page of the Times online, including one about China trying to build a hospital for 1000 people in a week.
