This has really rattled my cage!!! A tad over the top I think..

We were just commenting that that line needs changing when we yeard it in the car. My lgbtqia daughter was a bit shocked by it. It's a pretty serious slur so not acceptable in my opinion despite loving the song

paulhollywoodshairgel · 27/12/2019 16:06

In context though it's about a couple of drunk alcoholics having a fight! It was more the article I was asking opinions on. It just seems so over the top!

I obviously do not agree with any kind of hate speech by the way. But I honestly think that the author has really gone a bit overboard in his narrative.

The article is ridiculous and the writer incredibly dramatic. I love the song, as do many people. Honestly, the word faggot I immediately associate with mash and peas and being served it as a child.

In the context of the song, it isn't a slur. It's an angry drunk couple having a fight.

koshkat · 27/12/2019 16:19

What a load of old crap and what a completely ridiculous article!

They are a drunk, angry couple fighting - they are not meant to be a delightful middle class couple have a little spat. He calls her a slut in the song too - notice that Michael doesn't give two shits about that thought? Hmm

CuriousaboutSamphire · 27/12/2019 16:19

Faggot has so many meanings, all of them in current use. I don't think it will be replaced any time soon. I don't see why it should... I was more pissed off at 'fishy', complete with wafting of supposed fanny area, in the Quiz if the Year last night!

THAT is derogatory!

koshkat · 27/12/2019 16:20

My lgbtqia daughter

How on earth can your daughter be all of these things?

koshkat · 27/12/2019 16:20

Yes that 'fishy' comment - fucking outrageous. But it's just women so who gives a fuck?

BaubleTheLumpOfCoal · 27/12/2019 16:22

What in the world is an LGBTQIA?

koshkat · 27/12/2019 16:23

Ludicrous is what it is. Xmas Grin

SimonJT · 27/12/2019 16:25

I like Gavin and Stacey, but I turned it off as soon as I heard it. It’s bad enough being called it on nights out, at school as a kid etc. I don’t expect to hear it on TV, just as I wouldn’t expect to hear any slur.

We don’t need to be hearing faggot or slut on TV.

doublebarrellednurse · 27/12/2019 16:37

Did you miss the 3 threads about this in the week before Christmas

mrswx · 27/12/2019 16:38

We don’t need to be hearing faggot or slut on TV.

We hear a lot worse on TV.
Do you avoid or turn off everything on TV that contains potentially offensive words?

It's a fictional character in the song, I don't see it any different to a fictional character in films or TV shows. I didn't see anyone campaigning to get Game of thrones axed or bleeped out, which contained many offensive slur, as do many other big TV shows.

dognamedspot · 27/12/2019 16:47

"lgbtqia" OK, now I'm totally lost. Sad
The article is melodramatic and I'm sick of the ever-increasing list of things we are supposed to be offended by.
Meanwhile let's just mentally switch off to the songs referring to women as whores and bitches shall we? Personally that offends me. Fairytale of New York doesn't - it's in context and the language is mild by comparison.

Tombliwho · 27/12/2019 16:49

My lgbtqia daughter was a bit shocked by it
Grin what?!

Dollywilde · 27/12/2019 16:50

To be honest I think they should have changed it, there was an opportunity for some great comedy to avoid saying it. Deadpan Nessa or something, it would have worked. Whether or not you think it’s appropriate or inappropriate, as soon as I heard it I thought ‘oh god this is going to spark controversy’. If they’d at least changed it - irregardless of your feelings - we wouldn’t have to have this bloody debate again.

Genzeee · 27/12/2019 16:56

I’m glad they kept it in. It has lots of meanings now and some radio stations still play the full song. I was surprised though with it being the woke as fuck BBC

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/12/2019 16:59

YANBU
this is the second thread in a week discussing the word faggot. It’s not meant in the American gay context but as a mild Irish insult. Last time I checked Ireland wasn’t in the us.

Sparklesocks · 27/12/2019 17:04

I have a male friend who is gay and he was in a pub where it played on Xmas eve and a group of drunk men shouted the faggot bit in his face. It really upset him. When he and his friends challenged them they just laughed and said they were just singing along. I don’t think there’s any need to keep it in.

Morgan12 · 27/12/2019 17:10

Theres children drowning in oceans whilst fleeing their home countries.

But let's all get in a tizzy over a word.

Turned Gavin and Stacey off? Seriously? I take it you watch literally no TV then?

MorganKitten · 27/12/2019 19:23

For those questioning... The letters LGBTQIA refer to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, and asexual or allied.

The word should be taken out, and they do censor slut on the radio.

TheNameGames · 27/12/2019 19:30

The letters LGBTQIA refer to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, and asexual or allied.

Yes but someone can’t be all those things at once

gamerwidow · 27/12/2019 19:30

Kirsty McColl used to change the line when she performed it in later years. If she could manage then so can everyone else.

ShiveringCoyote · 27/12/2019 19:34

I think people know what the words mean but are wondering how your daughter can be all of them.

TabbyMumz · 27/12/2019 19:42

Perhaps he meant his daughter is a LGBTQIA friend.

littlepaddypaws · 27/12/2019 19:48

i'm more Confused by the LGBTQIA dd sounds rather ott, which one is she that she's offended ?
