To think it’s unhygienic to change bedding every six weeks?

Had this discussion with SiL. She insists we can do it fortnightly because we only have one DC (they have three), and it’s too much effort to do it more often with so many beds to change. Pillowcases do get changed weekly. She’s obsessive about cleanliness in most other domestic areas so it’s quite surprising to me...

I do mine twice a day.

Twice a week? There isn’t actually any hope for the planet is there? People are going to keep on doing what they want and as far as they’re concerned saving the planet is everyone else’s responsibility.

I change bedding when I think it feels a bit manky. 2-3 weeks for our bed, would leave it longer if it was just me. DH is a lot more sweaty.

We have four beds so we're washing at least one or more set of linen a week, which is quite enough. And it's my least favourite chore. DDs do theirs, DH strips ours and puts it in the wash and puts the fitted sheet and pillowcases on, I just do the duvet cover.

Soon2BeMumof3 · 26/12/2019 11:41

Yes- Bugger the planet, so long as we can all brag on Mumsnet about how clean our bedding is.

Wash on 90c, tumble dry, iron.

What an absolute waste.

Myheadisamess31 · 26/12/2019 12:13

Twice a week here 2 teenage boys so it's a must for me. Also do our bed twice a week because i love clean bedding

MiniEggAddiction · 26/12/2019 12:38

There is no way anyone needs to change their bedding twice a week, that's ridiculous and selfish. What on earth do you think is going to happen if you leave it for a reasonable amount of time?

otterturk · 26/12/2019 13:05

Disgusting. I change pillow cases and sheets weekly, duvet cover every other week. That's seriously nasty.

LittleDragonGirl · 26/12/2019 14:58

I'm a complete germaphobe and dont wash bedding weekly.. dont have a tumblr dryer and it takes up the entire airer. Usually 2 or 3 weeks, but if the bedding smells, is visible dirty, feels dirty then I will wash it more frequently as needed as cant be doing with dirty bedding. I do shower daily and in the summer or if I feel grimy will shower before getting into bed as feel disgusting otherwise and would have to wash the bedding in the morning if I didn't.

ferrier · 26/12/2019 15:02

God. The poor environment with all this washing and tumble drying going on.
I wonder if it's been scientifically proven that people who change their bedding every week are cleaner and more healthy than people who don't.

BuckingFrolics · 26/12/2019 15:22

My bed linen will be changed again on the first day of spring or if I get Dirty Bed Disease, whichever happens first.

Many of you are very very weird to change it all so frequently.

GlamGiraffe · 26/12/2019 15:32

@runninguphills re sofas, mine are leather and I wash them over once a week too. You can see the dirt on the white leather otherwise, so yes, some people do.

Vulpine · 26/12/2019 15:33

It may be unhygienic but whats the worst thats going to happen to you?

Limensoda · 26/12/2019 15:36

FFS....There isn't a prize for how often you change your bedsheets!
It's a choice. Change them every day if you want...or every 6 months....Who cares?
You won't die sleeping in the same sheets for six weeks. You are lucky to have sheets...millions of people don't.
If you have guests....give them clean sheets. If it's just you or your family....leave them as long as you want.
I sometimes change mine after a week....I've left them longer than six weeks. No one knew except me...and as I shower every day....I don't smell bad.
Stop judging....Stop being precious....grow up!

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 26/12/2019 15:39

whats the worst thats going to happen to you?

You might get judges by people you don't know on the internet.
Which is akin to having your favourite puppy kicked by a man in Doc Martens.

Lovemusic33 · 26/12/2019 15:54

I don’t have a dryer so during the winter it’s hard to change bedding every week. I don’t see the problem, I do dd1’s more often as she’s a smelly teenager who spends a lot of time in bed. I do mine every 2-3 weeks, I’m single so there’s no....um...sex juices in my bed and I bath/shower before I get into bed.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll1 · 26/12/2019 16:10

I must live in the same world as the other posters who don't see a problem with it. And I'm sure I've left sheets on the bed longer than six weeks. Nothing bad happened.

StarUtopia · 26/12/2019 16:15

OP I think fortnightly is grim - and you only have one child. What's your excuse for not doing it weekly?!

LaurieMarlow · 26/12/2019 16:20

What's your excuse for not doing it weekly?!

She’s making a more responsible choice for the environment. She doesn’t need an ‘excuse’ Hmm

Angrywife · 26/12/2019 16:23

How is it unhygenic? I may be wrong but people I know don't suck their bedsheets

Juliette20 · 26/12/2019 19:08

I doubt it. But I bet there is a correlation with frequent bed changing and being as thick as a short plank.

AmIthechristmasfairy · 26/12/2019 19:30

Twice a week.

Sometimes Mn is just bonkers

ScrimshawTheSecond · 26/12/2019 19:35

Polly99 · 26/12/2019 20:36

Ew. I'm not exactly hygiene obsessed, but my sheets are changed weekly, and the children's weekly when it is hot, fortnightly when it's not.
I'd like to do it all weekly but I work f/t and there's a limit to what can be done, especially as I think all bed sheets should be ironed.
If for some reason i can't get to DH/my sheets in a week, I change our pillowcases so at least we are not sleeping on old face sweat and drool.

Skinnychip · 26/12/2019 20:39

I do mine every 6 minutes , which is not as often as I'd like...
