To think it’s unhygienic to change bedding every six weeks?

Had this discussion with SiL. She insists we can do it fortnightly because we only have one DC (they have three), and it’s too much effort to do it more often with so many beds to change. Pillowcases do get changed weekly. She’s obsessive about cleanliness in most other domestic areas so it’s quite surprising to me...

I wash my bedclothes on a 90 degree
Blimey, what have they done to deserve this?

Flowerpower321 · 25/12/2019 19:05

Weekly here- superking, king and two doubles, cant believe people leave them on longer than 10 days, that’s grim. Towels also done at least weekly, hand towels and tea towels daily.

LaurieMarlow · 25/12/2019 19:52

Why would hand towels need done daily? Confused

Babybel90 · 25/12/2019 19:55

It’s not gross, disgusting or grim. Some of us don’t sweat buckets while we’re sleeping, and if you shower in the morning anyway then you won’t smell. I don’t know how often I change ours but I’d say 6 weeks is probably the minimum.

Her0utdoors · 25/12/2019 19:56

Meh, it's reality un this house these days. We survive.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 25/12/2019 20:11

I remember being the most hygienic person in a flatshare, who was the only person who washed handtowels and teatowels at the launderette. No-one else was going to spend their money on it. Filthy buggers.

And I did them weekly, or if I needed to make up a wash sooner than that (or they looked visibly grimy sooner than that).

Fishcakey · 25/12/2019 20:15

I tell people it's fortnightly but it's more like six weeks. We all shower every night. Nobody smells!

Fizzypoo · 25/12/2019 20:16

I change the beds weekly (mostly, it has been on occasions fortnightly). I only clean on Saturday mornings. If I change the beds and do the bathroom (weekly) my dp feels I pull my weight housework wise as he does the rest Wink

I sometimes do the skirting boards when dp starts to moan that he does more Xmas Grin

Bunnyfuller · 25/12/2019 20:21

I think the world would be a better place if people didn’t try to keep a sterile, artificial bubble as their living environment.

Unhygienic? Specifically what do you mean? Will people catch diseases from bed linen that isn’t washed more often? Will it smell? A smell is not the meaning of unhygienic.

Over washing everything is killing the earth, and us.

runninguphills · 25/12/2019 20:27

At least monthly here. We are a family of 5. I can't get excited by the obsessive washing of bed linen. We all bath/shower daily. We all wear PJs.

For those who wash bed linen weekly - do you wash sofa covers weekly too? Many people spend every evening sitting/lying on them. Guests also use them. Far more eurgh!

🤢🤮🤢

Windyone · 25/12/2019 20:34

Surely we all need to cut down on our laundry and showering to save energy? As the climate emergency gets worse how will all those changing sheets frequently cope? You all need to cut down on your showering and laundry!

Brittany2019 · 25/12/2019 21:06

"Very expensive from the catalogue deluxe teddy bear bedding" sounds grim as fuck.

Personally, i have super emperor bedding made from 100% natural fairies' tears that i wash at 300 degrees every two hours. Anything else is lower class vile and not a John Lewis tableau.

CornedBeef451 · 25/12/2019 21:16

I do ours about every 6 weeks or maybe longer. More often in the summer or if anyone is ill or it smells.

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/12/2019 21:18

Bit harsh @Brittany2019, she likes it.

PickAChew · 25/12/2019 21:18

Where does every six weeks come into it?

KarmaStar · 25/12/2019 23:04

Once a week minimum, every three days in the hot summer.

user1471439240 · 25/12/2019 23:16

It is quite normal to shower in the morning to wash away the smells of the night...

Branleuse · 25/12/2019 23:26

Surely if somebody doesnt smell, looks clean and their house is in reasonable shape, then stuff like this is just up to the individual?

ActualHornist · 25/12/2019 23:29

Honestly don’t care.

Our beds are changed when they need to be rather than on a schedule.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 26/12/2019 00:17

We do every Saturday morning, but this week I have had a miserable cold and been in bed sweating, so it was done again last night. DP can be quite sweaty, and we have a very hairy cat who likes to sleep on the bed, so less frequently would feel a bit yuck.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 26/12/2019 00:18

Oh, but absolutely do not iron any of it.

GlamGiraffe · 26/12/2019 00:36

2 double beds and one king size here. All pure cotton flat sheets I change them every week. The worst case has been two weeks when I've been too I'll to change them.they start to smell, I xant understand how anyone can leave them longer personally.
What about the mattress protectors and duvets inside? Do other people wash those regularly?
