To think it’s unhygienic to change bedding every six weeks?

Had this discussion with SiL. She insists we can do it fortnightly because we only have one DC (they have three), and it’s too much effort to do it more often with so many beds to change. Pillowcases do get changed weekly. She’s obsessive about cleanliness in most other domestic areas so it’s quite surprising to me...

No, that’s disgusting. I have two DC so three lots of double bedding once a week. We all shower each night, so if I had to stretch to a fortnight I would. 6 weeks is ridiculous and dirty.

bridgetreilly · 25/12/2019 00:18

Honestly, I can't get excited about anyone else's laundry habits. Washing bedlinen every six weeks is more frequent than most people in the world and throughout history. Do the kids smell or look dirty? No? Because it's fine. It really is. In an ideal world, sure, do it every couple of weeks, but so long as they wash them if any of the children have an accident or get sick or whatever, it really won't matter that they don't have clean sheets every week.

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 25/12/2019 00:18

Did you think to ask her how often she washes her towels and whether she uses a loo brush? For efficiency purposes.

PorpentinaScamander · 25/12/2019 00:18

An acquaintance of mine, who likes to tell people she's "OCD about cleanliness" only changes hers every 6 weeks. Boak. Apparently because they shower every night it doesn't matter.

OhCumInMyFaceful · 25/12/2019 00:20

I'm quite bad at this - now we haven't got a garden or another room to bung some dryers in, I can't do ours (two adults, two kids) as regularly as I'd like. But what I will do, is leave dirty bedding at the bottom of the laundry pile while one of a few different clean sets is put back on. So there's not always totally minging bedding on the beds but there will be minging bedding at the bottom of the laundry basket.

Alte · 25/12/2019 00:21

I try to change them at least every 3 weeks but one child tends to keep them for a month unless I remind her, and the other has been known to leave them for 4 months straight at times.

HoppingPavlova · 25/12/2019 00:26

Yeah, one of mine has theirs on for months until I notice their room starts to stink and then I badger them to wash/change them (and air their room). They don’t smell nor have they caught some disease. Meh

BahBloodyHumbug · 25/12/2019 00:28

6 weeks is gross but its her life.

AmIthechristmasfairy · 25/12/2019 00:30

Feelingstupid. disgusting ? Really unclench

HarrietThePi · 25/12/2019 00:31

I don't see the problem.

EL8888 · 25/12/2019 00:32

Grim. Bet that’s lovely in the summer or when people have a fever

Emmapeeler1 · 25/12/2019 00:38

I must live in another, really disgusting, world as I can’t see the problem with this.

ChocolateCoins19 · 25/12/2019 00:42

Weekly here. 2 double bed. 1 cot bed. And dsd bed even though only here weekends. It still gets done with the rest.
Plus baby due soon.
It hardly takes long.

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 25/12/2019 00:45

Six weekly is minging.

1 x Super King and 1 x King done weekly here.

I love the feel and smell of clean bedding.

DinoSn0re · 25/12/2019 00:46

We do ours weekly (at least) but only because we have a tumble dryer so can wash it for two hours, tumble for one hour and then put it away or put it straight back on the bed. If I had to have it all hanging around the house for days I’d probably leave it for a lot longer.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 25/12/2019 00:47

Ours is changed weekly but more do with the fact I love the smell and feel of fresh bedding than anything to do with cleanliness really.

Bluerussian · 25/12/2019 00:50

Even if everyone is clean they still sweat when they are asleep and will make the bedclothes smell if not changed frequently enough.

Six weeks is far too long, fortnightly is OK for most people, ten days or a week better.

It really isn't a big deal to put pillowcases, sheets and duvet cover in the washing machine, surely?

anon2000000000 · 25/12/2019 00:50

Every 2 - 3 days. Not for cleanliness, but because I love the feeling of clean bed sheets.

DdraigGoch · 25/12/2019 00:54

I keep forgetting. I haven't caught leprosy yet.

SprogletsMum · 25/12/2019 00:57

There's 6 of us so that's one double 1 bottom bunk 1 top bunk 1 cabin bed and a cot bed. You can think me as disgusting as you like but 6 weeks would be the minimum probably.

riotlady · 25/12/2019 01:11

I’m sure when I was a student I went all term without washing them tbh and it was fine, world didn’t end.
We never put the heating on though so don’t think I sweated much xD

Branster · 25/12/2019 01:11

That’s a very longtime for someone to sleep in their own sweat and microscopic skin and hair shedding even if they shower every evening and wear clean pyjamas.
Weekly here, there’s nothing like going to sleep in a fresh bed.

surlycurly · 25/12/2019 01:12

Teens beds are fortnightly, although the boy child could probably make that more frequent for al our sakes. My bed I do probably once a week and would do it more often if I could get the linen dried. I love a fresh bed!

wokingpizzaexpress · 25/12/2019 01:18

That is rank.
I wash my bedclothes on a 90 degree wash every Saturday morning. Then I tumble dry and iron them, and out the same ones back on. Saturday night is my absolute favourite time of the week. Getting into bed after it's all been cleaned is awesome. We also shower every night before bed.
I've no idea how people go for 6 weeks without changing. That is just gross

NoCleanClothes · 25/12/2019 01:25

I As a student I think I did them about twice a year. I don't think I ever saw anyone in the laundry room with bedding, we survived.
