Happy Impeachment! Next step is removal. (Trump thread 98)

In the last thread, Trump was impeached by Congress. Now the question is when the articles will be sent to the Senate for Trial, as - at this stage - there is no guarantee from Mitch McConnell of a fair trial. Trump clings to his belief that his call to Zelensky was “perfect”.

I read that piece already.

cozietoesie · 29/12/2019 23:16

Sorry. 7 assumptions to ignore.

pallisers · 29/12/2019 23:41

That article about impeachment assumptions is hopelessly optimistic - giving the ultimate best case scenario.

I'd love to think it is true but the reality is Mitch McConnell will hold the senate to the whip.

And the sad thing is the only people who care about Trumps effect on isis are people who wouldn't vote for him anyway.

The reality is also that so far the democrats aren't producing a candidate who will get the vote out. Every single thing Trump does that makes me despair for the US (inviting that criminal Seal to xmas dinner with him for example) is red meat to his base - they love it and they will turn out to vote.

This next election will depend on voter turn out. Trump is getting his base out. The only one likely to get anyone out for the democrats is Sanders.

We'll have to see.

NYT reports that Pompeo, Bolton, Esper met with Trump in late August to plead with him to release military aid. He rebuffed their effort. t.co/XNx42P7HLv

Of course he rebuffed their efforts. He had a favour to ask.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 30/12/2019 12:51

I assumed when that story first broke that Trump didn't want Ukraine to have aid which would go to opposing his mate Putin, and only later realised he was also trying to coerce the new president of Ukraine into scratching his back by supporting a false accusation against Biden.

cozietoesie · 30/12/2019 14:34

Likewise.

lionheart · 30/12/2019 16:26

It must be a little dangerous to try to play both sides, especially if one is headed up by Putin.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 30/12/2019 18:31

"Donald Trump has said he does not have time to read, but often uses his Twitter account to promote books that praise his administration."

I would have said that it was more a case of "does not have the attention span to read a book", given that anything he is supposed to read for policy reasons has to be bullet points on a single sheet of A4.

cozietoesie · 30/12/2019 23:09

I'm sure I read something today to that effect.

TheClaws · 31/12/2019 00:17

Putin and Trump have been chatting.

Was reading the Mallacoota thread. I never realized that Aus PM was such a fundamentalist extremist.

Does kinda worry me about Pence being made POTUS in the event of a removal. We've already seen how checks and balances aren't as strong as we once thought.

But I know removal is extremely unlikely.

My thoughts and prayers to all Aussies on this thread, and to their beautiful country.

PerkingFaintly · 31/12/2019 19:13

Yy, thinking of you, TheClaws and any other Aussies (I think some occasional posters are also there).

cozietoesie · 31/12/2019 19:15

Be warned. The
Bells bring out the worst in me. I probably won't post.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 31/12/2019 19:28

This time tomorrow it will all be over?

Not, alas, the Trump business, but the forced jollity at least.

Thanks for your good wishes Perking. We’re not in any danger at the moment. It’s just very hot, smoky, and we’re on high alert all the time.

Happy New Year to all. Glad to hear you are OK Claws - I had been thinking about you!

There's always (muted) optimism about another new year - 2019 was such an exhausting year (politically) - but 2020 is going to be dirtier and more dangerous.

PerkingFaintly · 01/01/2020 09:58

Very glad to hear that, Claws – hope your area stays safe.

I'm rather relieved to have heard from friends today, too. They live in a mountainous area the Victoria fires are creeping towards, and I had concerns about their ability to evacuate. Just found out they're out of the area and staying elsewhere at the moment. So that's a niggling weight off my mind.

Roussette · 01/01/2020 10:04

Thoughts with everyone in Australia.

Happy New Year to one and all Smile
