Happy Impeachment! Next step is removal. (Trump thread 98)

In the last thread, Trump was impeached by Congress. Now the question is when the articles will be sent to the Senate for Trial, as - at this stage - there is no guarantee from Mitch McConnell of a fair trial. Trump clings to his belief that his call to Zelensky was “perfect”.

How did he think he would get away with it?

AcrossthePond55 · 20/01/2020 20:11

Because he's an arrogant SOB lion. Just like his idol, Scrotus.

lionheart · 20/01/2020 22:32

Hubris then.

'Donald Trump appeared to compare the anniversary of his swearing-in ceremony with Martin Luther King Jr's birthday as the president boasted claims of low unemployment among black Americans.'

A kind of tipping point.

edition.cnn.com/2020/01/20/politics/cnn-poll-trump-impeachment/index.html

'51% say Senate should remove Trump from office.'

TheClaws · 21/01/2020 00:05

I saw that MLK tweet, lion. It highlights how arrogant and self-centred he is: he views every event, each person, every comment in relation to him. Everybody is the same, of course; we are the centre of our own worlds but Trump takes it to extremes. I would say that he believes he is the greatest, by far, and all is viewed from that perspective and orbit.

Thanks, lion. Yes. It is.

RhinoskinhaveI · 21/01/2020 12:25

It sounds like Dershowitz only reluctantly agreed to be Trump's lawyer, I find it hard not to look at his slimy brown teeth when I see him🙈
why did trump think that was a good look, maybe nobody with nice teeth would agree to work for him?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/01/2020 16:26

The president also claimed that the U.S. is among the countries with “the cleanest air and drinking water on Earth”

www.politico.com/news/2020/01/21/donald-trump-davos-climate-change-101327

Someone ought to murmur "Flint" in his ear when he makes claims like that.

yolofish · 21/01/2020 16:37

I might have understood what Davos is all about, but why did SCROTUS make his speech all about America?

yolofish · 21/01/2020 16:45

MIS understood, obvs...

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/01/2020 16:54

Because he is a thicko? and because all he is interested in is his base?

Randy Rainbow nailed it.

ludothedog · 21/01/2020 18:17

Watching CNN (it's the only channel I can get with such intensive American politics) and the senate trial. I just don't understand how it can be just so partisan in the rules and how they can possibily think this is ok?

Is CNN's coverage so biased?
How on earth can they get away with this?

lionheart · 21/01/2020 18:35

I remember feeling that way about the first Sally Yates and James Clapper hearings way back ... Shameless.

AcrossthePond55 · 21/01/2020 20:20

Partisanship on either side isn't ok, but the Dems are having to fight fire with fire. The McConnell rules are so one-sided that there's no other choice. Although MSNBC is saying that McConnell got his ass handed to him in caucus so he has 'tuned down' some of the worst. Like the midnight sessions.

I've been in and out but have been trying to keep up on MSNBC on telly and on Sirius XM. Thank God for Rachel tonight!

What's upsetting to me is that in the end I'm afraid it's not going to mean a thing. Hope springs eternal and all that, but there's no way that 22 GOP Senators are going to cross that aisle. I have to focus on that it's all about getting the truth out there.

lionheart · 21/01/2020 21:21

Yes. It's a journey that has to be taken rather than a destination that there's much hope of reaching ...

lionheart · 21/01/2020 22:54

oh dear.

secondnexus.com/mitch-mcconnell-trump-impeachment-witnesses

'A SurveyUSA poll of nearly 5000 voters indicates that a whopping 71 percent of Republicans agree with 93 percent of Democrats that new witnesses should testify in the Senate's impeachment trial.'

Bang on, lion.

And to decline to take the journey is also to lose.

Michael d'Antonio told us before the election that Trump's method has always been to generate such a whirlwind of shadiness and dishonesty that observers end up letting some of it go by unchallenged. When they do finally challenge something, Trump refers back to the unchallenged bit and says, "But you were complicit in that thing, your hands are dirty too, you're not in a position to challenge me."

The habit's so ingrained Trump even tried to do it to Comey during that dinner, when there was no "thing":

Trump then said: “Because I have been very loyal to you, very loyal; we had that thing you know.” Comey says he did not reply or ask what the president meant by “that thing”.
www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jun/07/james-comey-trump-congress-statement

So if Congress had failed to act, once it knew about his very simple misdemeanour attempting to subvert the 2020 election, then this Congress too would have had a "thing" in which it was complicit and would have been held over it forever.

Roussette · 22/01/2020 14:16

From a tweet, with a great picture...
69% of the country wants to see a fair trial; 100% of Senate Republicans voted with #MidnightMitch to insure there isn’t one

I'm too tired to think straight about this one, but wanted to get it on the thread just for the record. It's Trump-family pal MBS again.

Jeff Bezos hack: Amazon boss's phone 'hacked by Saudi crown prince'
www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/jan/21/amazon-boss-jeff-bezoss-phone-hacked-by-saudi-crown-prince
The Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos had his mobile phone “hacked” in 2018 after receiving a WhatsApp message that had apparently been sent from the personal account of the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, sources have told the Guardian.

This analysis found it “highly probable” that the intrusion into the phone was triggered by an infected video file sent from the account of the Saudi heir to Bezos, the owner of the Washington Post.
[...]
Large amounts of data were exfiltrated from Bezos’s phone within hours, according to a person familiar with the matter.
