Happy Impeachment! Next step is removal. (Trump thread 98)

In the last thread, Trump was impeached by Congress. Now the question is when the articles will be sent to the Senate for Trial, as - at this stage - there is no guarantee from Mitch McConnell of a fair trial. Trump clings to his belief that his call to Zelensky was “perfect”.

edition.cnn.com/2020/01/04/opinions/trump-threatens-stability-dantonio/index.html

'He plays with the scarier elements of human nature — aggression, tribalism, fearfulness and rage — and is not interested in calling on our higher instincts.'

edition.cnn.com/2020/01/05/politics/paul-manafort-robert-mueller-unseal-details/index.html

'Prosecutors told a federal judge on Sunday they are nearly ready to unseal details from court proceedings about how President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort lied during his cooperation, including about efforts to sway the President's approach to Ukraine.

Unsealing the details could potentially explain major questions about Manafort's connections to the White House and fill in gaps about what Russia and Ukraine hoped from Trump after he took office.'

RhinoskinhaveI · 05/01/2020 22:33

and is not interested in calling on our higher instincts
he has no awareness of the existence of such things, he can only go low

Trump as a faulty messiah used by God
faulty messiah?? I think they mean 'useful idiot'

lionheart · 05/01/2020 22:59

... 'faulty messiah' is way too grandiose.

I like this snippy reply from the HFAC to Trump re: his below tweet (“media post”) that he has attempted to style as a notification to Congress. No. You can’t do that. You can’t declare war on Twitter.

House Foreign Affairs Committee @HouseForeign 1hr
This Media Post will serve as a reminder that war powers reside in the Congress under the United States Constitution. And that you should read the War Powers Act. And that you’re not a dictator.

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump 2hr

These Media Posts will serve as notification to the United States Congress that should Iran strike any U.S. person or target, the United States will quickly & fully strike back, & perhaps in a disproportionate manner. Such legal notice is not required, but is given nevertheless!

That is really excellent.

TheClaws · 06/01/2020 07:50

And this:

Manu Raju @mkraju 4hr

NEW: Pelosi sends letter to colleagues: “This week, the House will introduce and vote on a War Powers Resolution to limit the President’s military actions regarding Iran.”

Nice one.

Lweji · 06/01/2020 10:15

But well done to Trump. He Iran got an excuse to end the nuclear deal.

Is it too cynical to think Suleimani could have been a bait? Maybe Iran wanted to get rid of him and offered him as bait to have a good excuse to end the deal. Too many spy movies?

Trump is now notifying the world of his intention to commit war crimes, which is what deliberately bombing/destroying sites of cultural heritage is.

The United Nations Security Council considers it a war crime for any military to intentionally target or destroy sites of cultural heritage, including museums and religious and archaeological sites.

It's what ISIS do, isn't it?

Roussette · 06/01/2020 11:44

Really worth a read. A twitter thread unrolled ...

threadreaderapp.com/thread/1214031169173348352.html

"Over the past few days, I've spoken extensively with career U.S. government officials as they've worked around the clock to try and mitigate the damage from Trump's ineptitude on Iran. With their permission, I'm sharing a small taste from our lengthy conversations. Enjoy."

It's scary. As he says... 'yes, it really is that bad'.

RhinoskinhaveI · 06/01/2020 12:21

Trump is bling and fast food, nasty cheap and tacky
of course he wants to destroy cultural heritage

PerkingFaintly · 06/01/2020 12:39

Wow. Illuminating that more than one official described the Trump admin being motivated by shitting on Obama, even in something as serious as taking the country to war.

What a fucking loser Trump is.

He pays homage to Obama with every breathe he takes, but in the only way his little reptile brain knows how.

Sayakaya · 06/01/2020 13:10

The impeachment that never was. TRUMP 2020

PerkingFaintly · 06/01/2020 13:44

Yes dear.Wink

And you're a bit late: he's already been impeached on 19 December 2019.

He's now waiting to be tried in the Senate. If two-thirds of the Senate vote to convict him, Trump will become the first US president ever to be removed this way. He likes firsts, so you'd think he'd enjoy this.Grin

(Other presidents have been impeached, but the Senate has never yet voted two-thirds in favour of conviction.)

Is that all you can muster?

Lordfrontpaw · 06/01/2020 14:04

Maybe he is just tanking it now?

If you are going down you'd want to be the very bestest/worstest president ever. A bit like the ancient Egyptians and their bid for immortality - as long as their name is spoken aloud they live on.

The impeachment that never was. TRUMP 2020

Thanks for the laugh!

Lordfrontpaw · 06/01/2020 14:44

(MSN NEWS) 'The House will vote this week on a resolution to limit President Donald Trump's war powers as tensions with Iran continue to escalate.

It appears Trump did not consult with Congress before taking military action against Iran, igniting a fierce debate about presidential power and the legality of such a move.'

That + threatened war crimes...

AcrossthePond55 · 06/01/2020 15:34

If only this latest bit of insanity could be the straw that broke Moscow Mitch's back (or his power). If only...but I'm not holding my breath.

Congress must give consent to an open declaration of war and the last time that happened was WWII. But that doesn't mean that a POTUS can't engage the US in military action. There was never a declaration of war for Viet Nam and we had active troops fighting there for 10 years. That's why technically it's called the Viet Nam 'Conflict'. Same for Korea, it was a 'police action' not a war.

Scrotus can do will do a shit-tonne of damage without a declaration of war.

A War Powers Resolution (WPR) isn't a fait accompli. It has to pass the House and the Senate by simple majority. But a POTUS can veto it, just like any other law. Nixon did this to a WPR during Viet Nam in 1973. It takes a 2/3 majority vote in the House AND the Senate to override a presidential veto (which Congress did in 1973). In trying to get a WPR through the Senate, once again we're faced with Moscow Mitch and his henchmen/women.

Here's the Senate breakdown:

Majority Party: Republican (53 seats)
Minority Party: 45 Democrat & 2 Independent (47 seats)
(Independents both caucus with the Democrats)

It would take only 51 votes to pass a WPR so only 4 need to 'cross the aisle. But it would take 67 votes to overturn a veto. That's 20 crossing the aisle and the same number it would take to remove him from office. Unless there's a wholesale mutiny against Moscow Mitch, it's not going to happen.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 06/01/2020 18:22

So Bolton has agreed to testify if subpoenaed... Shock

PerkingFaintly · 06/01/2020 18:31

I wonder if a Republican-controlled Senate will refuse to subpoena him?

One of the many things to be sorted out before the House passes the process to the Senate.
