Would you be sad if the Queen died?

I've just been reading the thread about Prince Phillip going into hospital and a poster said they wouldn't be sad if the Queen passed, as she doesn't actually know who we are.

I'm not a royalist by any means and I don't know how I'd feel if the news broke that she died.

How would you feel?

I’d be very sad. Like most commonwealth people alive she’s the only monarch I’ve known.

Butchyrestingface · 20/12/2019 22:14

Not sad. Nothing to do with being a bolshevik Republican but she’s old, appears to have enjoyed good health, lived to see her great-grandkids and been rich all her days.

And I doubt I’ll feel nostalgic since I want the operation disbanded.

Ellisandra · 20/12/2019 22:15

I can’t see that I’d be bothered. Very old woman that I don’t know. Wouldn’t touch me at all.

CruCru · 20/12/2019 22:15

I think I'd be fairly philosophical. Although I've never known another monarch (and I'm now middle aged), she has lived a long time.

When she dies, someone will say "The Queen is dead! Long live the King!" The UK will still have a monarch.

percheron67 · 20/12/2019 22:16

I have never met Her Majesty but I shall be extremely sad when she dies. For me, she has always been there and I have a huge amount of respect for her. Affection too, although that seems odd when I don't know her.

Elphame · 20/12/2019 22:16

I wouldn't be sad.

She's not someone I know personally. I certainly won't be watching any state funeral or buying any memorial souvenirs.

I hope it will be the beginning of the end for the monarchy

lazylinguist · 20/12/2019 22:17

I wouldn't be any more sad than I would be on hearing that anyone else that I didn't know and had never met had died. She's very old, has had a very fortunate existence and I don't think we should have a royal family anyway.

Bluerussian · 20/12/2019 22:17

I would feel sad, she became queen when I was 2 and I remember watching the coronation on TV (tiny little black and white screen), when I was 3.5 so she has always been queen for as long as I remember. I've seen so many ups and downs with her family and she has remained steadfast.

However she is in her nineties so we all know she won't be around forever. A lot will change when she goes.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 20/12/2019 22:17

I'd be amazed. I am fully expecting her to outlive us all.

But seriously, I'd be sad in a John Donne "no man is an island" way.

ShouldI101 · 20/12/2019 22:17

I think I would feel like it was the end of something unique. And it is. The length of time she's been the Queen, the things she had lived through, the way she has conducted herself, we'll never see that again in my lifetime for sure. But will I feel sad? I'm not sure.

Hingeandbracket · 20/12/2019 22:17

A bit sad for my own mortality really like I already do when someone I’ve grown up with dies. I am fairly ambivalent otherwise - I wouldn’t swap my life for hers and I certainly don’t subscribe to some of the rabid anti-monarchy venom

Ihavethefinalsleigh · 20/12/2019 22:17

Fuck no!

Wauden · 20/12/2019 22:17

Yes, I will be very sad.

VivaLeBeaver · 20/12/2019 22:18

Little bit sad, but she’s had a good innings. I’d be interested to watch the funeral on tv....be a one (or 2) in a lifetime event.

StrawberryGoo · 20/12/2019 22:18

Yes - always sad when anyone dies of course, and it will feel like the end of an era.

formerbabe · 20/12/2019 22:18

Yes definitely. I think she's incredible. As for the rest....hmm.

Once she goes, they'll be screwed. Kate's their only hope once the queen dies, in terms of their popularity amongst the British public.

Lllot5 · 20/12/2019 22:19

I’ll be devastated. I can’t bear to think about it.

EC22 · 20/12/2019 22:19

No, I honestly couldn’t care less.

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 20/12/2019 22:19

I've only recently become more interested in the RF (thanks The Crown Blush) and yes I would be sad because I think she represents the best of a different era but mostly scared because it could lead to great political instability and also Charles is too spoilt to make a good king.

(Also as a woman I have loved having a female monarch)

FruitcakeOfHate · 20/12/2019 22:19

I don't know her, she had more than a fair shake and a privileged life, I wouldn't feel sad, no.

CherryPlum · 20/12/2019 22:20

The question is, will we get a day off work

Saddler · 20/12/2019 22:20

Yes

Microdot · 20/12/2019 22:20

I'd be sad yes. Not broken up, just sad the way you feel when a celebrity you quite liked dies - she's a part of our lives and I can't help feeling she's a good person, unlike most of the rest of them.

Instagrrr · 20/12/2019 22:21

I would be sad, just because I’ve known no different in my life and I would be sad if anyone like that died.

I wouldn’t be sad enough to cry I don’t think 🤔

I was watching a documentary thing the other day about how radio stations and news producers rehearse once a month for her death. And the things that would happen when it does happen. It was interesting!

Sparklingbrook · 20/12/2019 22:21

Not really. I will be sad I will have to put up with wall to wall articles and TV programmes, souvenir pull outs in magazines etc for weeks on end though.
