How ‘thin’ is Hollywood?

Mereearthling · 03/12/2019 15:54

Sorry couldn’t find ‘chat’ section to post in. Driven by some recent mumsnet threads where there was disagreement on what slim/thin is, I just wondered, how thin do you think celebrities are?

Do you think most of Hollywood is under weight/ BMI under 18.5?

I always wondered- are they normal and we have lost sight, or are they really thin and unhealthily restricting?

I know that’s a generalisation either way but just thought would be interesting to get thoughts!

Guess the fascination is just mine 😂

Why do you care?

MissingLinker · 03/12/2019 16:04

Hmm, tricky one. I'd say that a lot of actresses, while not usually under 18.5, are on the very low end of what is counted as a healthy BMI. However, there's more variety than a couple of decades ago.

desperatesux · 03/12/2019 16:04

Much thinner than they look on TV. I have met some and they are all tiny in real life and this is coming from someone who is pretty thin themselves
Victoria Beckham looks about half the size in real life, in fact I don't think I have ever seen someone as thin as her who wasn't obviously anorexic. Like a tall 7 year old
My sil has seen a good few and she says the same of all of them, v v thin and v v old looking

TooMuchSun12 · 03/12/2019 16:09

@ItsNovemberNotChristmas So you never just wonder about random things sometimes?!

@Mereearthling I think there has been a bit of a shift towards athletic and fit actresses (think Jennifer Lawrence) but yes, I do believe the average Hollywood actress is on the low side of healthy. I wish there were more Rebel Wilsons, Mindy Kaling and Amy Schumers around to even it all up.

thecatsthecats · 03/12/2019 16:09

Anecdotally, it seems there is a much bigger trend towards 'fitness' rather than the 'thinness' of the noughties.

Size zero really looked bloody awful, lollipop heads everywhere, and a general look of poorly concealed pallor.

Now the dominant shape is still small, but with lean muscle. A flat stomach with a hint of abs, arms with a 'just right' hint of biceps etc seems to be more the norm.

I don't think it means that eating disorders and orthorexia won't be rife still, but at least it's looking healthier.

3luckystars · 03/12/2019 16:12

I'd say you would have to be 6 or 7 stone weight maximum to fit in to the clothes on the set.

SlightlyStaleCocoPops · 03/12/2019 16:13

" I wish there were more Rebel Wilsons, Mindy Kaling and Amy Schumers around to even it all up."

Someone will be along in a minute foaming at the mouth about "promoting obesity".

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 03/12/2019 16:14

I wish there were more Rebel Wilsons, Mindy Kaling and Amy Schumers around to even it all up.

It would be better if there were more people of a healthy weight about. Overweight is just as bad.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 03/12/2019 16:16

🙄 It's not about "promoting obesity" ''tis about having lost sight of what is a normal healthy weight.

And I know which end of the scale I'm at!

Sidge · 03/12/2019 16:16

I think there has been a move away from skeletal to healthier. I’m watching old Friends episodes a lot lately and Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox are incredibly slender, CC especially so - she is almost invisible when she stands sideways in some shots.

I’m not a big follower of Hollywood stuff but I do think women now tend to look slim and toned rather than skinny.

desperatesux · 03/12/2019 16:17

Amy Schumer is 10 stone , she looks WAY more than that on screen
I would think really 7 stone is pretty average and in real life for an Adult female of average height that is incredibly unusual
I met someone who met kate Winslet and said she is tiny in real life, on screen she doesn't look fat but she certainly doesn't look skinny either
She looks pretty average weight wise

Mereearthling · 03/12/2019 16:17

@desperatesux wow! So you think like below size 8 level thin?

@3luckystars if it really is 6-7 stone to fit the clothes, that’s terrifying on anyone of normal height!

TooMuchSun12 · 03/12/2019 16:18

I take your point with Rebel but I’d argue that Amy and Mindy are on the big side of ‘normal’. I think we see them on screen next to the industry standard über slim Hollywood actresses and maybe perceive them as bigger than they really are.

Sparklesocks · 03/12/2019 16:20

I have worked on film sets in the past and usually actresses are thinner, because cameras tend to add a little bit weight (or at least can appear to) Even ‘bigger’ actresses are a bit smaller in real life.

Also most ‘skinny’ actresses are very toned because they exercise a lot, so although they’re petite they don’t necessarily look underweight.

KnickerBockerAndrew · 03/12/2019 16:20

Not Hollywood, but I look at Davina McCall's Insta and really hope that someone is looking out for her. She looks so, so unhealthy imo.

Mereearthling · 03/12/2019 16:20

@desperatesux- that is terrifying if she really is 10 stone- she is normal size but ends up looking massive next to other celebs!

OP posts:
LochJessMonster · 03/12/2019 16:21

Rebel Wilson is overweight, probably obese. Not at all healthy and not a good role model.

Celebrities seem to be slim but toned as I guess they have personal trainers.

They are smaller than the average, but unfortunately the nation is getting larger and larger and being overweight is almost becoming acceptable now, which is not a good thing.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 03/12/2019 16:22

I googled them all and there are certainly pictures of them all looking past the big side of normal. I'm not criticising them though! They are happy with their bodies.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 03/12/2019 16:23

(I see Amy had a baby this year so that might skew things!!)

feelingverylazytoday · 03/12/2019 16:24

Very small. I've read an explanation about this, apparently it's not just the body fat and muscle tone that's important, it's how narrow their skeleton is, not just front view but when they turn sideways as well.
Also, it's not just for how the purpose of how well they photograph. One of the reasons is so that the male actors look bigger and broader in comparison.
Could be a load of cobblers of course. Who knows?

charm8ed · 03/12/2019 16:25

Not Hollywood but I’ve seen Kate Middleton’s wedding dress at Buckingham Palace and it’s tiny. I doubt if one of my wrists would fit into the top of the sleeve.

Noodles4Me · 03/12/2019 16:27

Well, I was in a film 2 years ago (very minor part) and I'm size 10 and was told I'd have to wear a men's costume as they didn't "do my size" in women's clothes

desperatesux · 03/12/2019 16:30

Like way below size 8, I am size 6-8 and they are about half my size and I am 8 stone and 5 7
Sure read any interviews before they were all muzzled, they all say they are basically paid to be hungry 24/7
TV really does add the pounds

Mereearthling · 03/12/2019 16:46

@Noodles4Me wow!
