How ‘thin’ is Hollywood?

95 replies

Mereearthling · 03/12/2019 15:54

Sorry couldn’t find ‘chat’ section to post in. Driven by some recent mumsnet threads where there was disagreement on what slim/thin is, I just wondered, how thin do you think celebrities are?

Do you think most of Hollywood is under weight/ BMI under 18.5?

I always wondered- are they normal and we have lost sight, or are they really thin and unhealthily restricting?

I know that’s a generalisation either way but just thought would be interesting to get thoughts!

Davina looks amazing!

dudsville · 03/12/2019 16:53

I recently thought that was changing. The show's I'm watching are showing bigger than size 0 women. But I watched an old episode of friends yesterday. It's the one where Monica phoebe and Rachael are in the toilet at Monica's wedding and they are waiting to find out if Rachael is pg. Rachael gives the other 2 a hug... I don't know how to describe this but they weren't either side of Rachael, they were lined up, and i thought how thin those women must be for Rachel's arms to fit around them both in that position!

Sofast · 03/12/2019 16:55

Bryce Dallas Howard always looks a healthy weight IMO

Some women are very slim but healthy to. Kate beckinsale is goals for me, I wish I had the motivation!

SimonJT · 03/12/2019 16:59

Lots of female celebs are quite small, as in their height. I haven’t met any who made me think they looked too slim etc.

Inniu · 03/12/2019 17:03

I think Amy Schumer has said she is 5’7 and just over 160lbs which just about moves her into the overweight bmi category.

busface999 · 03/12/2019 17:12

Not Hollywood but I saw Mollie from the Saturdays in real life, in a swimming costume, and she was very petite. She was a lot slighter than I'd have imagined from pictures. Although obviously I knew she'd be slim!

Saw J Lo in passing in LA once too, also much shorter and slighter than I'd imagined!

Sssneks · 03/12/2019 17:15

I have a BMI of 18 and realistically most Hollywood actresses look a good bit smaller than I do. I'm tall but still, even proportionately speaking.

Body fat distribution, skeletal structure etc will account for some of it but even so, I'm pretty convinced that around BMI 17-17.5 is probably the Hollywood "slim".

HumousWhereTheHeartIs · 03/12/2019 17:16

They are tiny. ExDH is an actor and has worked with a few of them. He is quite tall and slightly chunky and they look like 12 year olds beside him.
A friend is a make up artist and is super fit and healthy. She says Angelina Jolie looks malnourished in real life.

MistyCloud · 03/12/2019 17:41

@desperatesux

I would think really 7 stone is pretty average and in real life for an Adult female of average height.

PMSL!!! 😂

Yeah every woman I know of average height (so 5 ft 3 inches to 5 ft 6 inches tall.) weighs 7 stone! Totally common, normal weight.

@LochJessMonster

Rebel Wilson is overweight, probably obese. Not at all healthy and not a good role model.

Hmm yeah, 10 stone is a monstrous size. How the HELL do they get through normal sized doorways, and fit into regular sized beds? I bet they have to go to the Army and Navy stores to get a tent to use as a dress when they are going out anywhere. I bet they all eat snickers bars, baked in cheese, and deep fried in lard, and sprinkled with cheesy wotsits.

Fuck me! This place sometimes! 😂😂😂

Passthecherrycoke · 03/12/2019 17:46

As part of an old job I worked for a few film stars / famous people and found them shockingly thin. The one that really sticks out in my mind was Sarah Michelle geller, how doesn’t look particularly thin in photos so hot knows how skinny the real thin ones are

I’ve also seen the duchess of Cambridge and she’s a contender for one of the skinniest women I’ve ever seen. Her wrists were like birds legs

Sssneks · 03/12/2019 17:49

@Mistycloud

I think you've misinterpreted what @desperatesux wrote. She said:

"I would think really 7 stone is pretty average and in real life for an Adult female of average height that is incredibly unusual"

So basically that she reckons 7 stone is the average celeb weight, but that same weight would be very unusual in real life for a woman of average height.

ColleysMill · 03/12/2019 18:05

I rememeber reading an article about "size zero and striving for it" many years quoting a famous hollywood actress (although for the life of me i cant remember who it was - Charlize Theron maybe??? ) saying it was really disconcerting walking into a room and being the biggest woman there at a size 4.

There was also a radio interview with Gwen Stefani which stuck with me - there was the inevitable "youve lost all your baby weight so fast!" qu and her reply was brutal - along the lines of I do 4 hours in the gym every day, because its part of what is expected of me but shouldn't be aspired to as its is totally unrealistic for most women who have recently given birth.

I suspect, like in life, its very easy for some actresses and not so easy for others.

Passthecherrycoke · 03/12/2019 18:09

I remember the writers strike when Eva Longoria (then in desperate housewives) put on “loads” of weight (about half a stone- it really showed though) and said she was making the most of the period not filming to eat what she likes because she’s paid to be thin the rest of the time

DrivingMsCrazy · 03/12/2019 18:13

@MistyCloud your reading comprehension skills need some work. The poster was saying an average weight for the actresses would be 7 stone. Not your average woman overall. And it's Amy Schumer quoted as ten stone, not Rebel. Hmm

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/12/2019 18:18

I'm 5 foot and 6 st 13 and they look smaller than me, and I'm just in the healthy weight range.

AcrobaticCardigan · 03/12/2019 18:26

@Passthecherrycoke - pics are airbrushed that’s why.

Passthecherrycoke · 03/12/2019 18:34

Sorry was that meant to be to me @Acrobatic?

PippiDeLena · 03/12/2019 18:35

I saw some of the Game of Thrones costumes at an exhibition and I think the only costume that would have fit me was Hodor's. Especially Margaery's wedding dress for her wedding to Joffery. The waist was the width of a piece of A4 paper held in portrait mode.

Countryescape · 03/12/2019 18:38

Most of them I’d say would have an eating disorder or practice disordered eating. They are absolutely tiny and not in a very healthy way usually. Sure some are blessed with those genetics but most aren’t.

SebandAlice · 03/12/2019 18:43

I think a lot of it these days is down to the heathy LA life style - juice and fruit for breakfast, salad and fish for lunch/dinner and work out with personal trainer for an hour in the morning and throw in some yoga/Pilates/hikes at the weekend. The women have low body fat and are very toned. The men also have low body fat but with muscle as they do weights.

Sprinklemetinsel · 03/12/2019 18:43

I think if you look at their wrists and ankles, and their proportions, you can tell how slight they are. The camera may add pounds, but when you can see tendons and bones in places where they are usually hidden, you know someone is too thin.

FreeStar · 03/12/2019 18:43

Angelina Jolie looks malnourished in all forms of life!

desperatesux · 03/12/2019 18:48

Look at most of them before they were famous or just starting out and most are double the size. A lot were probably average slim but they go to a whole new level once they become a star and I don't think it is healthy eating.
I can pretty much eat what i want and be thin but I think even I would have to eat v v little to get to 7 stone and I have an extremely fast metabolism .
it is just a whole new level to what you would see on the streets. Look at a thin 7 year old girl child add and foot in height and that's what they look like in real life.

itssquidstella · 03/12/2019 18:49

I think it must be really hard for the many actresses who become famous/start working regularly whilst still in their teens. I teach in a secondary school and very many of the 14-17 year old girls are adult height but very very slim in that willowy teenage way. They start to fill out, often, by the end of sixth form, and if I ever see them again a few years later most of them have lost their willowyness and become normal-sized (albeit still slim) young women.

The pressure on actresses to maintain that teenage slenderness into their twenties and beyond must be horrific: a constant fight against biology.
