Caitlin Moran that is.

See timesonline.typepad.com/alphamummy/

But then my children haven't really taken to Charlie and Lola, so I'm biased...

she states that her 'story'is the same dynamite gossip as 'that man' dying....nice and sensitively put..

I think if I'd read your words aloha my opinion would be different

madamez · 22/08/2007 15:01

It's the old misogynist favourite, though, isn't it? YOu may be an author/illustrator whose work is loved by millions and has earned you plenty of money, but if you've split up with a partner and haven't had a child then you must be a FAILURE as a woman. Whereas self-regarding drivelling columnists whose interminable bangings on about their own lives don't attract anything like as much public admiration or indeed hard cash, can make themselves feel a bit better by going 'HA HA I'm BETTER than you because I've got a BOYFRIEND and I've had a BABY'.

ANd the comparison with Barrymore/Lubbock is pretty dismal. Barrymore was suspected of being involved in a crime ie possible murder. LC gave a fictional character a name that had bearing on her own life - which is not a crime.

oliveoil · 22/08/2007 15:04

oh FGS she is not saying that AT ALL

WHERE DOES SHE SAY THAT?

aloha · 22/08/2007 15:04

Look, I think it was a tad insensitive to post personal gossip about a private non-sleb on an internet site. The fact that there is next to nothing about Lauren Child in the public domain almost certainly means she is shy and private.
I would have been quite fascinated to hear it myself, and probably would have mentioned it to a friend if they knew Charlie & Lola.
CM isn't a nasty person, I am sure she didn't mean it to sound nasty. To me, she sounded over-excited and sort of forgot that it might not sound very kind in print. I diagnose too much time spent at home with C&L.

oliveoil · 22/08/2007 15:05

yes but further down there is a thread from eons ago discussing this C&L link

so CM is not the first to discuss it

anyway, I am getting v annoyed, am off to watch some paint dry

JeremyVile · 22/08/2007 15:06

There's no point....they are all bonkers.

Dropdeadfred · 22/08/2007 15:07

Aloha you are a very generous-spirited person

Carmenere · 22/08/2007 15:08

I agree with aloha.

Dropdeadfred · 22/08/2007 15:08

JV - why do you keep saying that?

aloha · 22/08/2007 15:09

madamez, she says nothing REMOTELY like that. She is not gleeful. She is a bit overexcited to hear gossip about a woman whose work clearly looms very large in her two-daughter household, but she clearly thinks that it is sad that someone with such a crystalline understanding of and empathy for children and a desire for children of her own, should only have a fictional ghost son, created through her work.
People on MN have avidly discussed the real meaning of Soren Lorenson on several occasions. My son isn't mad about C&L so she barely features in my life.
However, partly because of my many readings of Peter Rabbit et al, I was fascinated to read about the solitary childhood of Beatrix Potter, and how when her little brother was born, they became passionately attached to each other, yet Beatrix was never able to have children of her own.

I am not nice! I just think CM is really quite a nice, self-deprecating person from all I've read.
Blogs are odd really. The point of them is that they are informal and intimate, and if you were saying those things to a friend they would be fine, but of course, they are so public.

JeremyVile · 22/08/2007 15:12

I dont keep saying it, though can if you want, but honestly this is absolute madness, to get so worked up about...well, i dont even know.
The great crimes of CM that you cite just dont exist, you are completely mis-reading it.

aloha · 22/08/2007 15:13

I think finding out that Soren Lorenson has a hidden meaning is what made CM so excited, not the fact that CL wanted children.

Dropdeadfred · 22/08/2007 15:13

But it wasn't a personal blog was it?

aloha · 22/08/2007 15:13

Oh bugger it, she can come on here and defend herself

Carmenere · 22/08/2007 15:15

But she wouldn't be able to defend herself aloha because DDF et all have got the MORAL HIGHGROUND therefore there is no argument.

Dropdeadfred · 22/08/2007 15:15

JV - I could say that YOU are the one misreading it if you cannot se ethat it's nasty to mention a death (well two actually) in her piece...

BUT I have said you are entitled to your opnions, without slagging you off for it..
Whereas I have been insulted alot on here...but if that's your style carry on too...have a blast!

Dropdeadfred · 22/08/2007 15:17

Carmenere...if she wanted to defend herself I would of course listen. But I sincerely doubt she is bothered about my opinion...

JeremyVile · 22/08/2007 15:18

....probably right DDF.

Hurlyburly · 22/08/2007 15:18

Aloha you are nice and I almost always agree with you. Except on this point and maybe you are in a better position because you know CM and we don't so you know she isn't nasty and we don't.

But we are all going a bit bonkers here ourselves - to be getting heated up about a relatively insignificant blog-piece. Really we are.

Time for a group hug?
