To ask about Jeremy Corbyn and anti semitism

So having decided to vote labour I had a conversation with a Jewish work colleague who said she couldn't vote for him, hated him even. It took me a few seconds and then i realised why. I said that I had stuck my fingers in my ears and my head in the sand somewhat about this, hoping it was just the media etc.

We didn't get into it as I could see she was uncomfortable.

So can someone tell me if and why he is an anti-semite? It doesn't sit well with me to vote for someone like that but I desperately want the Tories gone and my politics is definitely to the left.

I'm honestly not being goady and I know I could google but i wouldn't know where to start to get an unbiased view

Actually 87% of Jews believe Corbyn and the labour party to have issues with anti-Semitism. Are they wrong?

YouJustDoYou · 19/11/2019 09:47

This thread is what it is like to be inside the Labour Party today. It is why Luciana Berger, Louise Ellman and others have been bullied out. Pete Willsman ("Jewish Trump fanatics"/"Rabbis controlled by Israel") is still a member

^^This. It's just disgusting. British Jews are trying to speak up and say how unsafe they feel, but people like @Amazonfromkent and @Travelfan1 just wilfully ignore their fears. Why? Why would you disregard an entire section of society who are TELLING YOU they do not feel safe, TELLING YOU the party is antisemitic?

Imagine reading some of the bile on this thread and that post being what you are disgusted by Truth. I imagine many readers will be equally appalled by this thread but probably for different reasons to you.

Well if a bunch of non-jewish think so then 87% of the community must obviously some how be wrong. Nothing like a bunch of privileged westerners to tell a section of society they're wrong because they "don't see it".

Halleli · 19/11/2019 09:51

It's not a race to the bottom, antisemitism shouldn't get to be the worst kind of racism

Fuck off. Just fuck off.

Nobody is claiming that antisemitism is the worse form of racism. We’re just trying to get it recognised as racism full stop - something which many posters on this thread clearly don’t think it is. Jews are the only minority who so-called ‘progressive’ people accuse of lying or having ‘ulterior motives’ when we call out racism against us.

And, by the way, I take Islamophobia just as seriously. There is isn’t a chance in hell that I’ll vote for a Conservative party that demeans and belittles my Muslim friends.

Anyhow. I’m leaving this thread now. I need to find a Hebrew refresher course to book myself onto in case my family’s situation in this country becomes untenable. Which this thread has led me to believe is a bigger possibility than I had thought)

(And to @mycatthinksshesatiger, of course)

I don't think either main party are particularly anti - semitic or racist, but these allegations against Labour are certanly very useful for us Tories.

Factional debates can leave parties unable to see the broader picture and get people bogged down and not working for their cause (The Tories have had it to some extent over Brexit as we are divided - I voted remain and am Tory).

@curlykaren
I don't see where anyone has suggested that any form of racism is worse than any other but this is a thread about one particular form, antisemitism, where a number of poster have responded to concerns raised by British Jews with anti-semitic remarks. The very fact that posters feel comfortable to do this on a public forum should be concerning to all.

HopeMumsnet · 19/11/2019 10:01

Hi all,
Firstly, sincere thanks to everyone who reported their concerns about this thread. Apologies for having taken so long to go through it but it was clear from the start that it merited a very close read, as well as a good dig in the background, in order to take the correct action.
We'd like to enlist MNers further to help keep things on track; as we have observed this type of discussion can attract subtle and not-so-subtle anti-semitic posts, which of course we delete. If this thread is to continue, we would hope that we can rely on our users to continue to report. We want the conversation to flow, of course, but where we think any poster is being disingenuous we need to act.
Many thanks.

curlykaren · 19/11/2019 10:03

I'm not dismissing anyone's fears. I'm saying there doesn't exist a better option. I'm not going to withhold my vote and risk the tory party succeeding. Many posters on this thread have hurt your argument/position by dismissing anyone who says that by calling them a cult. It's a very similar tactic to the trans movement labelling women terfs and shutting down their voices. It's been eloquently explained that choosing political allegiance necessitates consideration of a range of positions. We can all only choose one option, that option can be acknowledged as imperfect while still resembling more closely our preferred outcome than the other options.

@hopemumsnet, I cross-posted with you before Candy’s comment was deleted.

HopeMumsnet · 19/11/2019 10:19

Of course, Ritascornershop, don't worry. It was just a bit of a conversational dead end so worth tidying up while we were here anyway.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 19/11/2019 10:23

@TheoriginalLEM

As a non-Jew Labour voter of many years, seeing you repeatedly deny that Shylock is a racist slur does more to convince me that the labour rot wiis irredeemable than anything else on this thread.

Yours sincerely,

a working-class voter.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 19/11/2019 10:25

Sorry, wrong @ command. So sorry, LEM.

Should have been @ImGoingToBangYourHeadsTogether

GlitchStitch · 19/11/2019 10:27

Given that one of the defences of Amazon and Jolly was that they obviously weren't anti-Semitic or MN would have intervened, maybe now they can reflect on that since the vast majority of their awful posts have been deleted.

UnrelentingFruitScoffer · 19/11/2019 10:37

This thread is, like, wow.

I had no idea people were so interested in the politics of the Middle East. It doesn’t seem to have much to do with a modern British election one way or the other.

I’m not Jewish so I had no idea about all this anti-Jewish prejudice. Sounds horrible.

bellinisurge · 19/11/2019 10:39

@curlykaren this is nothing like the "TERF" issue.
Shutting down racists is not up for debate.

Jojo2389 · 19/11/2019 10:40

I'm really pleased to see a response from Mumsnet on this. I reported a number of posts myself but requested that the less (incredibly) offensive anti-semitic posts be left so the narrative is clear to those reading who were curious about what the problem exactly is.

I am still horrified at the openness with which some posters are happy to share their abhorrent views about our Jewish population.

bellinisurge · 19/11/2019 10:42

What it has to do with the UK election is that a party of whom you would expect better allows this prejudice a home. As does its leader who wants to be PM.
It is no surprise that the Tories indulge islamophobia. You expect nothing less. You expect better of the Labour Party. And don't get it.

GlitchStitch · 19/11/2019 10:47

It's a very similar tactic to the trans movement labelling women terfs and shutting down their voices.

Actually you have it the wrong way round. If there are any parallels they are in that some on the left have found a way via the trans debate to be openly misogynistic and still call themselves progressive, and they have found a way to be openly anti-Semitic too by saying it's all about Israel.

ViaSacra · 19/11/2019 11:24

Given that one of the defences of Amazon and Jolly was that they obviously weren't anti-Semitic

I rather suspect they were one poster repeatedly namechanging to make it look like people agreed with them.

ArseDarkly · 19/11/2019 12:00

This is why we need a PM who cares about the issue of Israel/Palestine - www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-50470812 if you are looking to learn more rather than just read endless accusations and anger
