To ask about Jeremy Corbyn and anti semitism

So having decided to vote labour I had a conversation with a Jewish work colleague who said she couldn't vote for him, hated him even. It took me a few seconds and then i realised why. I said that I had stuck my fingers in my ears and my head in the sand somewhat about this, hoping it was just the media etc.

We didn't get into it as I could see she was uncomfortable.

So can someone tell me if and why he is an anti-semite? It doesn't sit well with me to vote for someone like that but I desperately want the Tories gone and my politics is definitely to the left.

I'm honestly not being goady and I know I could google but i wouldn't know where to start to get an unbiased view

missyB1 as I posted before on MN you have a lot of us who were party members and who have always voted labour and are frustrated, saddened and angry at what the party has become and we are up against what at times seems like a cult the only good thing to come from this election (as the Conservatives shall win) is that Corbyn will have to step down but if it went to vote to the party members he would be kept in place such is the devotion to this back bencher agitator who had achieved nothing in 30+ years as an MP apart from being a thorn in the side of party leaders and constantly voting against the party he is meant to represent.

I am not so angry that Boris is leading the Tories as it’s not the party I believe and have faith in to be the better party to run the country - Labour i always have done until Corbyn

Help yourself ArseDarkly Grin

noblegiraffe · 17/11/2019 17:10

we don’t see threads about the Islamaphobia and bigotry in the Tory party

Why don’t you start one?

ArseDarkly · 17/11/2019 17:12

Enthusiasm -far out! Grin

PeterOhanrahahanrahan · 17/11/2019 17:17

"What about Islamophobia in the Tory Party? Not fashionable?"

This is a common way of deflecting the issue. Someone highlights antisemitism and someone else says ah but what about x or y?

This erases responsibility for the racism under investigation. If everyone is guilty, no one is.

So let's stay focused on the Labour Party which is what LEM asked about.

Should I vote for a party where Jewish MPs are bullied out with antisemitic misogynist abuse?
Should I vote for a party in which hundreds of members including candidates have been found sharing Nazi-grade antisemitic theories and Holocaust denial and whose "rooting out antisemitism in all its forms" consists of advising candidates to remove incriminating social media posts?
Should I vote for a party where a close associate of the leader calls allegations of antisemitism "mood music" and whose shadow home secretary calls them "smears"
Should I vote for a party leader to be PM who either agrees with all of this out of dogmatic principle or who doesn't think it's important enough to be worth dealing with?
Should I ignore all this because there is antisemitism in the Conservative Party?

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 17/11/2019 17:21

Arse I think the question couldn't be clearer really but if you don't want to answer that's up to you.

ArseDarkly · 17/11/2019 17:23

Hey everyone! Look over here - there's antisemitism!

No no, don't look over there at that stuff about Arcuri and Russian interference and electoral fraud - look at this about labour antisemitism!

Dammit, I said DON'T look at that stuff about child poverty, NHS crisis, Social Care crisis, Prisons crisis, Education crisis - look at this about antisemitism!!

Fgs! Don't take any notice of people going on about Tory Islamophobia, that's just whataboutery and not the same at all, those complainers just don't have a balanced view!! Take notice of the antisemitism in labour!!!

etc etc etc

curlykaren · 17/11/2019 17:23

For fuck sake, the conservative party is by FAR the most fucking racist and blatantly don't even do anything or hold anyone to account. They haven't even instigated an enquiry which was 1) promised and 2) called for in parliament by a Sikh MP. I've already posted links to open letters, from prominent Jewish people, stating that Jeremy Corbyn has put a huge amount of effort into stamping out antisemitism. The whole conservative ethos is based on identifying groups of people as 'others' and blaming them for any perceived social ill. The other day Boris Johnson blamed NHS waiting times on PEOPLE USING THE SERVICE. If anyone actually posting is genuine, rather than a Tory social media stoodge, and you've previously voted labour and are considering not doing so on this basis, frankly, you need your eyes opening.

ArseDarkly · 17/11/2019 17:28

Do you believe that Jews are lying or exaggerating about anti semitism?

All Jews? All antisemitism? Make your question clearer

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 17/11/2019 17:28

This thread highlights why I don’t think I can vote labour whilst JC is leader of the party. The cult of Corbyn and its deflection of the issue shown on this thread alone staggering.

I thought I could get my mind around this issue by looking at who is standing as my labour mp is the upcoming election hoping to see someone who has addressed this issue and was not a Corbyn drone.
After googling her she appears to be a well meaning middle class but pretty much unknown candidate.
I live in a pretty strong Tory area but labour has made some inroads in the local council elections and she is a labour councillor. Plenty of media posts about local issues but no experience at a national level.

I have rules out Tory, labour, Lib Dem and green. We do have an independent so I will need to google them as they are a unknown but even if I do feel I can give them my vote they are very unlikely to win the seat.

Mamasaurus82 · 17/11/2019 17:28

Well said curlykaren

Patroclus · 17/11/2019 17:34

You can support Labour but not Corbyn. Its a huge party.

MyOtherProfile · 17/11/2019 17:35

Well said Patroclus and before we know it the labour party will have a different leader anyway.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 17/11/2019 17:36

Well some people don't think hostility to or prejudice against Jews is the least important issue facing them and that it should come at the very bottom of the pile.

Some people believe the amount of anti semitism within a political party making it impossible to vote for a party that they have supported all their life is a huge issue and worthy of discussion and consideration as well as all the other issues like the NHS and education.

Some people would like to be able to discuss this without being minimised and dismissed and accused of not being genuine just for wanting a discussion. It's very telling indeed that we are being accused of lying, for stating our experiences and views. The irony.

MaxNormal · 17/11/2019 17:37

Dontsweatthelittlestuff I'm genuinely not even a Labour voter though and definitely not a Corbyn cultist.

Patroclus · 17/11/2019 17:38

Very true what has been said about this weird appearance of 'jews are all right wing' thing. There is a very strong history of socialism in modern judaism wich they have also been attacked for in the past.

noblegiraffe · 17/11/2019 17:40

weird appearance of 'jews are all right wing' thing

Jews = the elite and elite = Tory. Obviously.

churchandstate · 17/11/2019 17:41

I find it hard to believe anyone is anti-Semitic. What a bizarre prejudice to allow to foster inside you.

churchandstate · 17/11/2019 17:41

Or, to fester!

AnnieTotach · 17/11/2019 17:44

@ArseDarkly
The 87% of British Jews who believe corbyn to be an anti semite?

curlykaren · 17/11/2019 17:47

Nothing to do with a personality cult, everything to do with policy.
If you don't agree with the policies, fair enough.
If you believe, even to a small extent, that as a society we should at least TRY be fairer, look after the disadvantaged and stop using money publicly raised by taxation, to further line the pockets of the already uber rich, vote labour.
Rampant capitalism is destroying the natural world, our habitat, we won't escape the destruction. Brexit is Neo Liberalism to the extreme, under the conservatives the destruction won't be halted, stopped or even slowed.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 17/11/2019 17:47

I’m hoping the next leader of the party will be Keir Starmer but fear it shall someone more to the left who Corbyn gets behind let’s just hope it’s not John ^Marxist McDonnell or Angela i never finished school* Rayner

CendrillonSings · 17/11/2019 17:50

The public know all about Labour's antisemitism now, and the cult is not happy about it, not one little bit!

curlykaren · 17/11/2019 17:51

Cult...yawn

CendrillonSings · 17/11/2019 17:55

Cult...yawn

Yes, their membership is known to be quite dozy!

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 17/11/2019 18:05

Well to many it appears that way what many Corbyn supporters are willing to ignore and try to justify is astounding - to think some actually believe he was a key player in the Irish peace process

Only other leader of a party that I can remember receiving such devotion was Thatcher (begrudgingly there is something to admire in what she achieved (first female PM)
