to be outraged by Nativity casting as 'Innkeeper's wife'!!!

PIPERHELLO · 15/11/2019 09:26

Daughter (6) has been cast as 'someone's wife' in the Nativity play at school. 'Innkeeper's wife' to be precise.

Err...hello!?

This is fucking not OK! In 2019, to be identified as 'someone's wife'.

Normally I am pretty relaxed about all things school, and I certainly feel sorry for he teachers' workloads, but come on people!? This is 2019 - no woman should be identified by her relationship to a man!? SURELY!

Itching to call them out on this. Itching!

I would be annoyed. Why aren't they both just innkeepers?

Thestrangestthing · 15/11/2019 10:59

Untangle those knickers OP.

PIPERHELLO · 15/11/2019 10:59

JusticeforSandra - love it!!

They're more twisted than tangled actually! ;)

Maybe we could add in a vegan and a YouTube vlogger to capture the birth of Christ ..... really make it ‘2019’

Oysterbabe · 15/11/2019 11:01

This thread will make the daily mail 100% They love this shit.

notsohippychick · 15/11/2019 11:02

OH MY GOD. If this is all you have to gripe about then you are doing well.

Honestly get over yourself. Think yourself fucking lucky. Some of us have terrible issues to deal with relating to our children and this isnt an issue to get het up about.
Really, check yourself.

TeacupDrama · 15/11/2019 11:02

you know in the Bible there is actually no innkeepers wife no mention is made of either Mary or Joseph's age we have no idea some say this some say the other but we have no idea

this is the sole biblical quote regarding inn
"she gave birth to her firstborn, a son.and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn."

Haffdonga · 15/11/2019 11:02

I agree with you.

I wouldn't go in and complain but it is just another tiny example of how we give messages to young children that jobs are done by men and women are only identified in relation to a man.

Interesting how many presumably intelligent people have leapt on you on this thread and told you you're being ridiculous. If they'd never noticed the innkeeper example of everyday sexism before, doesn't it just show how subtle and deep the messages are that we all take on board from a young age?

Mrsjayy · 15/11/2019 11:03

Oh Arch angel Gabriel could be an. Influencer Grin

myolivetree · 15/11/2019 11:03

Oh please. A school nativity is more of a sweet convention than an actual historical documentary.

Ours did it with ABBA songs for God's sake.

It would be EASY to slightly change "innkeepers wife" to something BETTER.
^
Why ? Because it's a POSITIVE thing to do. No need for outrage .^

bbcessex · 15/11/2019 11:03

Completely agree, OP, and @OllyBJolly has summed up my thoughts perfectly.

Your DD is playing one of the InnKeepers. Far better message for children and important to stamp out casual sexism like this wherever possible.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 15/11/2019 11:03

Considering the star of the show is Mary and poor Joseph is just the cuckold I would just be pleased the child wasn't cast as a sheep or brussel sprout.

JonnyPocketRocket · 15/11/2019 11:05

When it was my first nativity I wanted to be an angel but wasn’t allowed as I had dark hair; the only ones cast as angels were blonde. This was 1984/5.

This was my experience in the early 90s too. Little did they know they were in the presence of a child who had played the actual baby Jesus as a 4-month-old preens

Fortunately those two experiences balanced each other out so I managed to reach adulthood emotionally unscathed.

AryaStarkWolf · 15/11/2019 11:06

So no one is allowed talk about anything but really serious stuff all the time? How depressing

thesunwillout · 15/11/2019 11:06

DD was head elephant once !

marshmellowed · 15/11/2019 11:06

Yes ! Arch angel Gabriel definitely an influencer 🤣
He would prob be releasing a make up palette too

MolyHolyGuacamole · 15/11/2019 11:06

I get it OP. They could be Innkeeper Husband and Innkeeper Wife. It doesn't have to be blatant doing flips and cartwheels to be sexist.

GrandmasMeatloaf · 15/11/2019 11:08

OP, if you are seriously concerned about this, why don’t you use it as a starting point to tell your daughter how far feminism has come in the last 2000 years? Give her a bit of historical perspective? My DD is 6 and she loves the fact that there were two female pharaohs, so I am sure your DD will get it.

I personally would not appreciate a nativity with ecological sheep, a low carbon emission inn and gender neutral innkeepers. But I am traditional with nativity plays. We luckily live in a very different world now.

AryaStarkWolf · 15/11/2019 11:08

@Haffdonga Exactly

vivacian · 15/11/2019 11:10

It's a sweet, traditional story that the feminazis, snowflakes are out to destroy. Everyone knows that all of the innkeepers were men and women were the innkeepers wives. All of the angels were pretty, blonde white children and anyone with a disability should count themselves lucky to get a part playing an animal.

vivacian · 15/11/2019 11:11

Considering the star of the show is Mary and poor Joseph is just the cuckold I would just be pleased the child wasn't cast as a sheep or brussel sprout.

I think that you're getting mixed up with Marymas.

Eckhart · 15/11/2019 11:11

Read the cast list at the end of the next couple of films you watch. There's often 'Teacher's wife' or 'Doctor's husband' , etc, for small parts, people we don't need to know the name of. It's not sexism just because she's a wife and has never been cast with a name. 'Innkeeper' is gender-free. How would you feel if a girl was cast as the Innkeeper?

myolivetree · 15/11/2019 11:11

@vivacian

Totally

PooWillyBumBum · 15/11/2019 11:12

I'm surprised people are so outraged at OP's outrage. What's wrong with Innkeeper 1 and Innkeeper 2? They aren't even bloody mentioned in the Bible and - even if they were - a 6 year old won't understand the historical context and will just have innkeepers and their silent wives added to their framework of how the world works and where they belong.
